Title.

I'd have to say imprisonment. I love when they take all your items and your forced to break out of prison with absolutely nothing. You get all dependant on these gadgets and stuff, then your forced to use nothing at all and fend for yourself. Levels like when they lock you up in Deus Ex, Metal Gear Solid 3, etc. Those were my favorite.

The only really action oriented one is "Get from A to B with lots of guns" because really in a FPS that is all you do. Although "Assassination Missions" can be either stealth or action.

EDIT: This thread caters more to action/adventure/RPG games rather then puzzle games or RTS's, although depending on the game, it can apply to some of these, such as Commandos is technically a RTS, and can also be applied to many of these choices.

I like it when something different is thrown at you from the normal game experience. But it has to be memorable.

Two come to mind- the mirror-puzzle in the orignal Tomb Raider and trying to escape a falling ship in Jedi Knight (where the walls and ceiling would become the floor as the ship plummeted to the planet surface). Oh yeah, and when you got the phenome or whatever in HL2 to control the ant lions. That turned things around a bit.

I say from A -> B silently. I remember one of the most fun parts of Crysis was when I was walking through some water, and a chopper was flying around above me, shooting me fulla shit. I had to hide in the bushes and trees and somehow make it across the giant open field without it killing me. Was great fun.

Definitely assassination. I wish they'd had more of this in GTA IV, there were very few levels where you could choose how to take down a target.

I love having to think my way from A to B, so tactical it is for me, but ususally I just want puzzles, and some more puzzles.

Well them a bit less then the rest but they're ok as long as they can keep up

Open sandbox levels, which start as A to B, but are in fact A to E levels because of B, C and D objects scattered throughout the level that you may or may not want to explore, attack, wander about in... etc. That didn't make much sense, but basically think Operation Flashpoint type maps where there's a whole boat load of stuff to do. There's a map in the Battlefield: Bad Company singleplayer which on the whole isn't that great a singleplayer game, but this one map, called Crash and Grab, see's you thrown into it on your own with an entire mountainside forest to ascend, attacking or sneaking past checkpoints as you go. Sometimes I like to barrel through the level in a truck, sometimes I like to go into vehicle depots with C4 and create chaos from the inside, other times I like to sneak around without anyone noticing me, and sometimes I'm partial to just grabbing a sniper rifle and putting fear into the enemy by racking up clean kills from around the map from the many vantage points.

Another favourite of mine isn't strictly a planned gametype in the games I enjoy to play it in most, it's more of a personal thing, but in the Halo and Half-Life games I always look after and try to protect as many marines and Resistance members as possible. I'm not a fan of escort missions - that's not what I'm talking about as in those scenarios you are tasked to defend people/things against an enemy that isn't always, depending on the difficulty, that designed for slaughtering NPC's but are instead just there as a wave of floating guns that put the pressure onto you. No, I'm talking about through the course of a level where things like Banshees, Wraiths (Halo) or Gunships, fast zombies (HL2) are there to kill you but in the process will attack anyone around you, and it's in those circumstances that I like to work as a team and get everyone through safely, no matter how significant their presence or survival may be.

I enjoy those types of playing most on levels that include big beasties that, in a horror movie, would rip someone in half and you would end up thinking ''holy shit, poor bastard'' except in Halo and HL2 the gibbing/gore is lowered somewhat for all good reason and purposes, but even so, I always enjoy getting Resistance members through parasite infested buildings or whatnot, or Marines through Flood areas. Though I say that, at the same time I also really enjoy watching friendly NPC's get swamped by horrible creatures and killed... bahaha

Its sorta a combonation of three options for me. I love assassination missions, but the more people you are allowed to take out the better. In this case setting up multiple traps, and waiting for everyone to play their parts perfectly is also tactical. If everything goes well, its the most satisfying experience in a game, and if it doesnt, its fun to watch everything go to hell too :)

So I'm guessing you like the Hitman games?

So I'm guessing you like the Hitman games?

I must admit, I have only tried one (Blood Money). It was okay, but didnt hold my interest for long. The Splinter Cell series is more up my alley, though if there is a better Hitman game out there I would like to try it.

I liked Contracts, although most people hated it..

A to B with lots of guns. I suck at stealth games and I "plan" (tactical) all the time. Why do I want to do it in a game for? Although sometimes in some games, A to B run-and-gun levels still require some degree of tactical planning.

i.e. shoot the other guy before he shoots you! :D

This is assuming though you mean action third-person/first-person games. I still like games like Portal.

I like tactical missions that require a little bit of forethought. Not to the point of plotting out every single team member's path through the level ala Rainbow Six, but something like "it's close quarters so I should equip a shotgun instead of an assault rifle," or "this building has a robust security system, so I should bring my computers expert." Stuff like that.

I like tactical (probably my #3) such as in game like Rainbow Six and SWAT 4. Nothing like spending all the time planning, then just decimating everyone with a perfectly executed plan. Swat 4 is better for this, though, as you have snipers outside the building you can control, and you can use your team as a whole or split them up into 2 man teams... I love that game.

tactical is the best. It took me 2 hours to compile the perfect plan on RvS on elite. The outcome was very satisfying.

From A to B with guns blazing. You can never go wrong with guns blazing!!!!!

Whenever it is an option, I stealth kill everyone.

My chosen "other" was sewer levels. All games seem to have at least one (which is good cause i like them) which is often filled with zombies or monsters or some other non-human opponent , although if they are human thats cool too.

My favourite level ever is Surface Tension in Half-Life, and that's pretty basic.

i like escort missions especially in FPS games. missions where you have to defend a given area also belong to escort missions in my book.

what about defensive missions or is that covered in the escort?
