favorite NIN song

What is their best song in a way that I could have a pretty good résumé of what they do?

If I had to pick just one I would suggest "we're in this together now" it's just an all around likeable song. Though if you have the time I suggest listening to all of NINs tracks. you can't really pick just one to show what they do.

What?

Listen to the Downward Spiral, then listen to the Fragile. Note huge extremungo difference.

Sonic Youth - Dirty Boots

eh?
looks like someone forgot to read the thread title properly.

some more advice for AntiAnto: if you enjoy instramentals then you will/should be pleased with The Fragile album since it has a few instramentals and in my mind, they are masterpieces. ;)

Meh, Closer. Guess I'm just a fan off the classics.

I love alot of them.

Wish
The Day the World Went Away
March of the Pigs
Suck
The Hand that Feeds
Star****ers, inc.
We're in this together now
The Nekromatic Sunshine remix of Hurt.

It's hard to choose my favourites.

Pretty good freeman. Also, here is a vid of NIN playing Closer live with a little twist. They added a little breakdown from "The Only Time" from Pretty Hate Machine in there. I think this is one of the best versions of the song I've heard.

The next NIN concert in is Detroit (about 4 hours from here I live) and they're going to be performing with... Peaches. How could I miss this one?

I'm not somehow big fan of NiN (I have only one album - Pretty Hate Machine).
I really like songs Something I Can Never Have and Down It...

I've only got DS and With Teeth, so I couldn't possibly pick an absolute favourite.

Heresy is my most listened to at the moment, nice angry song.

Sorry for being a NiN nub, but what song is that playing on there?

the song is from the new album.
the song is called "Right where it belongs" and the new album is called With Teeth.

Hmm.... which to choose....

Perhaps "The Wretched". Full-on energized production with that badass chorus bit. When I attended a live performance, I swear I never yelled so hard as I did during that bit.

Or maybe "The Big Come Down". That beat's pretty wicked in that sort of "machine slowly starting to fall apart" kind of way. And the buildup to its climax is fairly intense.

Then again, "The Becoming" is one of my all-time favorites and gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it. And "Closer"? Nothing more needs to be said about that particular track.

But in the end, if I had to choose one that gave the most forceful tug at my insides, it would probably be "The Downward Spiral". All the preceding tracks lead up to its only conclusion. The melody from "Closer" takes on a far more eerie nature, and then it all bursts out into a clash of muffled guitars, screams, and vocal meanderings. "He couldn't believe how easy it was. He put the gun into his face. Bang. So much blood for such a tiny little hole."
Hardly a track I put on repeat, but no other song of his quite gives the same effect.

As for a slightly different selection, I'd say my favorite remix is Charlie Clouser's mash-up of "Star****ers, Inc." which isn't so much of a remix as much as it is Charlie beating the original into unrecognizable pulp and claiming it as his bitch Aphex-style.

Ruiner.
We're in this together now
Every day is exactly the same
Even deeper.
The wretched

all are musical masterpeices

Agreed, that is one of my favorite NIN tracks ever.

Also, the second (final) chorus on "Hurt" is just filled with so much energy and emotion that it could probably make anyone shed a tear in the right time and place. Same with "A warm place"

I went to the NIN concert here a few days ago.... oh my ****ING GOD how mindblowingly awesome was it!?

Not a huge fan, but The Becoming is probably my current fav. Also Closer, The Wretched and March of the Pigs are cool beans.

I've been listening to the first disc off of The Fragile for about two weeks straight. I cannot get over how good Trent is.

Off of this disc, I'd have to say my favorites are, in order of appearance, Somewhat Damaged (LOVE the intro), The Day The World Went Away, The Wretched, We're In This Together.

However, my all-time favorite is The Becoming. I think I just really like the lines "The me that you know, he used to have feelings, but the blood has stopped pumping and he is left to decay" and "Hiding backwards inside of me, I feel so unafraid/ Annie, hold a little tighter, I might just slip away"

I just picked up "The Downward Spiral" with the whole CD/DvD dual disc thing. I thought it was very impressive...my favs off it were The Becoming (love the transition from heavy to acoustic guitars back to maddened synthesized fury) and Ruiner.

EDIT: Does anyone find the humming at the beginning of Eraser to be just a little...creepy?

which version?
you realize that there are two versions of the song...original being off "The Downward Spiral" album and the other being from the "And All That Could Have Been:Still" album.

personally i think both are great but the one off the Still album just shows how unique Trent's voice is because it really stands out.

oh god, I love Left. Hell, Right is amazing too, but I'm always into either one or the other, not both.

The Day the World Went Away is my favorite NIN song of all time (it's made several appearances in my signature), but I also love Somewhat Damaged (it opened the NIN show I saw a week ago, I almost died with delight), We're In This Together, The Fragile, La Mer, Just Like You Imagined, and The Great Below. From Left, I mean.

Left is superior IMO. It has Somewhat Damaged, The day the world went away, We're in this together, Just like you imagined and La mer.

Right has The Big Come Down, mark has been made, star****ers

idk...but the big come down is one of NINs best

what about Into The Void, Underneath It All and Where Is EVerybody? :p
on a serious note tho, the only tune on The Fragile album that is out of place is Star****ers INC. IMHO.

Star****ers is the most obnoxious song on the album, but it's sandwiched between two tracks that offset it. Basically, it serves its purpose and fits into the whole piece.

Not sure if I prefer Left or Right, as it depends. Left feels more brooding, but Right has some more catchy, nod-your-head type of shit that you can throw into your car player. If I were to epitomize them, it would be like throwing "The Wretched" up against "Into the Void". Both are great, but they are considerably different, and it largely depends on the context in which you will appreciate one more than the other.

I actually don't really like the Wretched, mostly because of the annoying beginning (when the rough piano stampedes in over the beautiful Frail chords).

Heh pretty good vid there Zeus. There's another one I saw on YouTube, it shows them performing and Trent is totally trashed out of him mind lol. He's jumping around and kicking things and the other band members, funny stuff.

Actually, I think that was a great way to kick off the song. And it works especially well in a live environment.

But it's nothing compred to the awesomeness which is the song's final chorus/crescendo.

Yea I like The Wretched live because of the end where trent is screaming 'u can try to stop it but it keeps on coming'. And xombine, thats the march of the pigs video (I thin)

i think thats the video from Philly where hes having a bunch of technical difficulties and he gets angry...lol

Right now im listening to ripe (with decay), usually I just skip past it (idk why), but now that Im actually listening to it its actually really good

so i was browsing a certain NiN related site and noticed this video from a Beavis and Butthead episode posted.
best part is when Butthead asks Beavis if he has a nine inch nail
and the commentary on March of the Pigs? don't even ask...lol

Haha yea, I saw that too. Pretty funny. I like the 'Wish' music video though, its pretty crazy, like when they pull the keyboard player up with the rope and attack the band at the end.

Man, I wish I could find the broken movie in high quality...I saw the happiness in slavery video in high quality for the first time (only saw in it LQ before), its pretty sick, even moreso that its all real, except for the part where the guy gets enclosed and grinded into human chuck and dumped on the pile of festering worms.

Top 3 NIN songs in order (list of my favorites would take like 20 songs so I'll just take my top 3):

1. Ruiner
2. A warm place
3. Happiness in Slavery / Piggy (very close tie)

there is a high quality version of the Broken movie version 2.0
you use torrents? go to http://www.demonoid.com/ and search for it.
Trent has said it will never see an official release and to download it off the net

theres also a 700 meg compilation of rares songs NiN has done live over the years and i believe Ruiner is part of it...another good download.
