SWIII 20 minutes of full on sci-fi action...Especially the calmness of the first minute. Big giant capital ship. Camera moving in into shadows then picking up on 2 jedi-fighters. I almost crapped myself the first time

Maltese Falcon, Beat the Devil, Blade Runner, Vertigo, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Rear Window, Raiders of the lost ark

but the consistantly best opening in a movie has to go to the James Bond franchise ..I cant think of a bad opening

I liked the opening to the warriors. Just seeing all the gangs going to the meeting. Then there's the line "I bet no ones even gonna show up" and BAM, 60,00 odd people are there at the meeting.

QFT. That scene just sets the tone for the rest of the movie. That sort of wow./wtf feeling. Man, I love that movie. Saving Private Ryan's opening is good too though.

Anyways, a good opening to a movie is...you guessed it Akira..the music is extremely simple but has a powerful effect. The huge drum beats at the start gives you a "you're doomed and there's not a damn thing you can do about it" feeling.

I definitely would have said that if it wasn't at least 15 minutes into the movie. Although it does come after the title screen.

To this day the opening scene from Star Wars IV stands out most to me. I still get chills as they show the space ships come into view on the top of the screen.
