what constitutes "epic" songs? i thought epic in the traditional sense like side B from the Pink Floyd album Animals or 2112 by Rush or Rhythm of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden

Devin Townsend - Earth Day
Dream Theater - Octavarium
Symphony X - The Odyssey
Meshuggah - I
Tool - Disposition/Reflection/Triad

I define an "epic" song as either "climactic", or a song that has a deep meaning to it.

Also, Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)

Skyliner by BoC has a really big sound to it.

Also, Next Heap With by Aphex Twin feels like the sound track to the story of all history and time. I love that track so much.

Gotta get a message to you - Bee Gees
I Started a Joke - Bee Gees

Mastodon - Blood Mountain (entire album)

seriously. I thought I hated metal- then I discovered Mastodon :D

There is only one song that deserves to be called epic and that is Ghost Love Score by Nightwish. All other songs are just immitations.

Epic album indeed!

Metallica - Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn at S&M
Pearl Jam - many many songs
Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark, Paschendale, Dance of Death
R.E.M - Everybody Hurts

Good, but Metallica - No Leaf Clover > that! A fucking orchestra + Metallica = win.

Is it just me, or is the best part about XP the Windows Welcome Music?

I was going to ask this myself - this looks like a list of everyone's favorite metal songs so far. I thought it meant 'favorite snowboarding music', as that's usually where I hear the word 'epic' outside the context of movie advertisements. I keep thinking "Material Girl" by Madonna or "Butterbean" by the B-52s, so I'll abstain from including an actual submission.

The theme song from 2001: A Space Odyseey and various Beethoven tunes.

Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons
Dream Theater - Octavarium
Dream Theater - Finally Free
Dream Theater - The Glass Prison
Dream Theater - In The Name of God
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Metallica - Dyers Eve
Metallica - One
Metallica - Loverman (Sexy cover. Hetfield's vocals are perfect)
Metallica - No Leaf Clover
Muse - Knight of Cyndonia
Symphony X - Inferno

Jackyl - Locked & Loaded
AC/DC - Shoot To Thrill (Very underrated)
Van Halen - Mine All Mine
Van Halen - Hot For Teacher
Ozzy Osbourne - Shot In The Dark
Aerosmith - Back In The Saddle
Aerosmith - Sweet Emotion
Rush - Working Man

Those are all I can think of right now...

I've heard metallica with an orchestra and it's not epic at all. Sounds like they just slapped it together. I do like metallica though, but I wouldn't consider any of their songs "Epic".

Epitaph and In The Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson

Tonight, Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins which at least sounds epic... beautiful beginning to an album (after the piano instrumental, of course).

All Apologies by Nirvana feels like an epic swan song.

There, there
by Radiohead.

EPIC

noun: 1 A long poem describing the deeds of heroic or legendary figures or the past history of a nation. 2 A long film, book, etc. portraying heroic deeds or covering an extended period of time. Musically, can also be known as a 'concept' album.
Examples, literary and musical - The Lord of the Rings, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Beowulf, The Fountain of Lamneth, Thick as a Brick, 2112.

Ignorance of one's own language is not an excuse for stoopidity

Right now, its...

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien - 3030

That dictionary is ignorant!

NIN - Just Like You Imagined (the music in the 300 trailer which I think fits realy well)

Everytime this comes on when I'm on my bike ride I can't help but suddenly increase my speed throughout the entire song.

More later.
