I've heard metallica with an orchestra and it's not epic at all. Sounds like they just slapped it together. I do like metallica though, but I wouldn't consider any of their songs "Epic".

You've obviously never heard the song The Call of Ktulu, which in my opinion is their best song.

what constitutes "epic" songs? i thought epic in the traditional sense like side B from the Pink Floyd album Animals or 2112 by Rush or Rhythm of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden

Those are what I'd consider "Epic" songs. They're all extremely long, by song standards, and are very well written. A short song that's good I wouldn't consider epic. I believe, however, they're just using "epic" as to mean good, which is what most people seem to use it for nowadays anyway.

Basically epic is a song you listen to for the first time, and think 'wow'.

Check out Muse's performance of Butterflies and Hurricanes, live at Glastonbury. Best performance of the song imo.

Epic, eh? Hmmm...

"Airbag" by Radiohead - Feels like a star hurtling through space until it bursts into a badass supernova.

"Wax The Nip" by Aphex Twin - Sounds as if some kind of machine is being energized up before being released into some sprawling, sci-fi battle.

"Just Like You Imagined" by Nine Inch Nails - Needs no explanation.

"Pro Radii" by Autechre - Can't put my finger on it, or even begin to describe what I think of. Each time I've listened to it, I've always thought of a new concept behind it.

Can I say LCD Soundsystem's All My Friends? Does it count if it's not metal? :p
The Jeff Wayne War of the Worlds soundtrack - Brave New World.
And Ghost Love Theme is pretty good too.

Dream Theater's The Presence of Enemies.

I love the second part with it's dark riffs and vocals...cheesy but great. ;)

Flight of the Valkyries is pretty ****in epic. and not in the "epic = any song i like" kinda way.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - They Don't Sleep Anymore on the Beach

23 minutes long, complete with different movements, the last of which made me reassess what I considered brilliant music. That, my friends, is epic.

Lynyrd Skynyrd- Free Bird
The Offspring- Pay the Man
Darkest Hour- Veritas, Aequitas

Amen to Flight of the Valkyries. Still a very popular and widely known song to this day. God bless Wagner.

A couple more I can't think of.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - They Don't Sleep Anymore on the Beach

I must listen!

Anything by Godspeed You! and A Silver Mt. Zion is epic, most notably the He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corners of Our Rooms by A Silver Mt. Zion.

Yes, I was going to mention them but felt it would be cheating.

I absolutely love Tool - Third Eye, as well as Tool - Lateralus.

As well as the following:
Nine Inch Nails - Eraser
Nine Inch Nails - Happiness In Slavery (live)

All very epic songs
