Since we just can’t get enough of this, MSNBC has their take on the Half-Life 2 source leak (thanks Nick). There’s nothing really new here, but they do seem to confirm FBI involvement in the situation:

A source familiar with the case said federal agents were investigating. An FBI spokesman in Seattle declined comment.

Taken from PHL.

Why are you surprised that the FBI is involved in this?

I'm not, merely pointing it out that those source leakers will have their asses caught soon.

because it's the FBI for cryin out loud i mean they go after the big leaguers not sourse rips but then again we could consider this as big can't we.

hahaha great, die mr hacker. goooooooooooo FBI!

Its probably an interstate crime, that makes it their jurisdiction. Besides the fact they are the only ones capable of serious investigations of computer crimes.

i'm gonna join the fbi one of these days i wonder how you join i mean what would the interview be like. Heh they strap you down to a chair have a sweat lamp five inches from your face and then they interogate the crap out of you.

Its not that difficult to get into the FBI, there is a huge need there. You just have to pass an in depth backround check, and take a test. You arent going to get the greatest position without expertise in some field though.

yeh the FBI can easily get access to most information like logs, ect. like i said in a previous post, i really would be suprised if the FBI hasnt put a finger on the person who was incharge of stealing the source code.

Man.. i Just Saw a One hour special about this on the Discovery channel.
it was called the FBI Files or something.

I was thinking, they could make all ISPS scan the users PC when they connect and auto delete files.

I doubt it would happen, work or be legal, but it'd be cool.

Not suprised at all that they are involved. I also wouldn't be suprised if this is a inexperianced hacker and will be caught within the next month or 2, just like the kid that spread the blaster worm and decided to leave his web site address in the URL. The source had to be sent to a real IP and that IP is probably still on Gabe's computer.

The only thing about that is with that huge list of programs that were installed on valves computers im sure there was something to delete the logs. If they were they might be recoverable depending on the file system used. The FBI is excellent at recovering data from hard drives that have even been crushed into peices

You moron.

The value of the source code to Half-Life 2 must be millions of dollars and, considering the team size, over a hundred man years of work. This IS big.

Plus havok code along with it therefore potentially putting havok out of buisness.

Some 15 year old kid is going to find a new girlfriend in his 6x6 cell.

Either way, it will be bad for him. Muhaha!

The FBI doesnt always go after big crimes like murders. The FBI will knock on your door for a 5 dollar theft (im not kidding) If its important to them they will pursue it no matter what. and yes the hacker is probably sh*tting bricks right now, i know i would be... Like always the FBI tries to make examples out of people , and id hate to be this guy if he does get caught.....

I have a rather amusing story about something very similiar to that scenario.

Not to be to much of a dick here and not to go on record taking smack about the FBI or anything but i have seen some of their equipment and even talked to several of their cyber crime agents and while they are smart and have decent tools, they arent as fearsome as everyone thinks they are.

I would be more worried about NSA CIA and other such unknown agencies that overstep their boudnaries or simply dont have any.

dorks, when a hacker goes to prison, they dont put them in the same prisons as serial killers and the like. they put them in a cooshy one sometimes isolated. if you think every offender goes to the same prisons you are wrong.

VALVe: So you guys are here to find out who took the source code?

FBI: The wha? Actually we're here to ask you if there's a release date yet...

Ewwwwe Tork you been watchin too much Court Tv...I hope they never get caught...they pulled off themost fantastic hiest ever... God I cant sprell bft ist foooony

;p i love that station , the system , forensic files.

Really hope they will get them!

Maybe truly a bit far fetched...But i hope there are some HL-Fans under the NSA executives too.
If the FBI wont get them, maybe the NSA would be able to...
(even if i know such an involvment is absolutely unlikely, they surely would have the equipment, knowledge and power to trace down almost everyone everywhere! Especially with all the Information of phonecalls, internettraffic and emails etc. they're gathering and storing constantly worldwide 24/7. And hey, why cant hacking & industrial or economic espionage of an US company be seen as a national security thread!?!)

that picture sucks.

I doubt the hacker used his home computer to steal the source code, if he was that dumb.....

I hope he's caught and stripped naked and strapped to a chair and burnt with lit cigarettes. :)

I'd leave him in a room full of headcrabs with a crowbar to fend for himself.

lol, I suppose you think he goes to the hacker central offices? If he used his home PC, he's screwed. If he used an office PC owned by the company he works for, he screwed big time. (Not to mention the company being screwed aswell)

It's just one big screw if you look at it.

I wouldn't want to be in his shoes right now.:O

Well, if FBI is on this case... maybe tomorrow or tuesday this guy will be caught.

I'd leave him in a room full of headcrabs with a crowbar to fend for himself.

No... it's too easy. Leave him with Ant Lion with one stick do fight.
