Feel the Sound

hmmm. Wasnt feeling anything, but it was pretty interesting how the miraca was moving around. Granted, I didnt listen all the way through.

Wasn't it a box of matches?

That sound placement is awesome! I kept wanting to turn round to see if someone's there, but I kept my paranoia under wraps for now.

got any more?

It is a 3D sound. They wanted you to feel like someone was around you. That is why I told you to put headphones on and close your eyes.

Well the lighting of the match at the start would imply he was shaking a matchbox...so i think you wasn't listening properly. Its quite interesting to hear the noise move around the back of your head to either ear. Nothing that amazing, but interesting.

Matt if you got a chill down your spine, i suggest putting on a jacket or something?

Hmmm, that's what I did, but I just heared a guy with a matchbox walking back and forth. Nm.

I started listening a few seconds into it, after fixing my headphones into place. :monkee:

Now that is awesome sound....damn that's good sound....WHY CAN'T GAMES HAVE THIS!!!!!!

Games do have sounds like this...

And i felt chills too, pretty awesome.
*listens again*

I tried it at first, wasn't very impressed, then I changed my output settings from 5.1 to 2.1 (I've got surround sound headphones) and bugger me! Very freaky!

This is really cool. Who needs headphones when you have Logitech Z5500s though?

HAHA!! No they don't! I have never heard a game with headphones that make it seem the sound is above you or below you, this does and it's great... here's an article on Holophonic sound.

I can usually tell where people are in games... though i guess thats because i know the maps and the routes people take.

I dunno, i'm not an audiophile :p

There was this awesome HL2 vid that showcased HL2's ability to recreate sound...
It actually could give the impression that the sound was above or below you. The sound below they demonstrated by making an explosion in a ravine, the dopplereffect was recreated and you could hear clearly that it came from below. I'll search for the vid, but I'm afraid it's gone since it was one of those E3 exclusive thingies :(

HOLY ****ING SHIT! THAT IS WHAT EAX IS SUPPOSED TO BE! :smoking:

Close your eyes + headphones = best effect and creepy.

Wow... that was pretty cool.

If I open my eyes while listening to it it does some weird shit to my brain, I can hear a guy walking around me with matches but no one's there. Makes my head explode.

Aweshens! Absolutely brilliant. I need to play that on my surround setup.

This better not be a screamer.
*tests*
Edit: Sweet Jesus! Just think what horror games would be like with this!

Woa, that was it. Changed from 5.1 to 2.1 and suddenly I see the point.

(zalman 5.1 headphones ftw)

Oh... my... god... that was incredible! I kept looking behind me thinking someone was there...

I wish music sounded like this

I wish games would incorporate this instead of this fancy Dolby and EAX. I haven't heard EAX sound like this.

Take back what I said.

I have a SB X-Fi, and I just downloaded the BF2 demo to test my 7800GT, and I turned on EAX Advanced HD with Sound on Ultra High, and it has the same effects. It REALLY helps me out. I can easily pinpoint a sound now (I'm using headphones). Yay, now I'm gonna play BF2 only for the sound :D But I'm also playing on Maxed, 1680x1050, 2xAA, 16xAF too

So, now we know, BF2 incorporates Holophonics ;)

Yeah... i knew i was right when i said i could tell where sound was comming from. BF2 with sound set to high with EAX on is so awesome.
The best part is when a jet goes zooming past just above your head, i feel like i should really duck sometimes :p

Yes, but this does it without the need for an x-fi card.

I know, but for games, it makes sense. The holophonics sound clip was recorded in a special way, it was static. It's not feasible to record game sounds the same way, mostly because it doesn't make sense. Game sounds, or, environmental sounds aren't static, meaning they don't stay in one place. A guy is shooting in one place, but he moves around doesn't he? Why would you record a gunshot as far away, when you could incorporate technology to make it seem like its far away? That way you record one sound but can do a variety of things with it. So the only way they can make holophonic sound is with sound card technology (EAX) or creating their own system (Half-Life 2).

So that's why we don't see it as much in games.

X-Fi has a tech called CMSS3D-Headphones, and it's the holophonic effect. The sound clip they use to show it to you is a helicopter flying above your head, and it certainly sounds that way. :D

I'm also using crappy headphones.
