Hi all,

Just joined:thumbs:

Im gonna be geting HL2 this weekend but before i go and buy i have a few questions and if possible you friendly people would answer them for me?

1.Is it true you get Counter strike:Source included with Hl2?

2.Does HL2 have any Multiplayer/Internet option so that i can play it online against people?

3.Is there a Cd version and a DVD version?

If so im gonna be getting the Dvd version,Although it doesnt realy matter because i have both a Dvd drive and cd drives.

Thanks for answering my questions :p

1. Yes.
2. Yes, HL2 deathmatch
3. As far as I know there is only the DVD version or the downloadable version.

Just to clarify, HL2 Deathmatch won't come with your purchase although you are entitled to it. You need to download it from steam, so you need an internet connection, but you also need it more importantly to register your cd-key with your steam account.

I think the CD/DVD option depends on where you live. Europe seems to all have DVDs, and America had the CDs. It may have changed now with other versions of the game out (e.g. Game of the Year Edition).

So i can just download HL2 Deathmatch from steam?

I already have a steam account created so when i buy it tommorow and instal it will it be listed in steam or will it have a desktop shortcut?

This steam programme is all new to me:laugh:

I also live in the uk btw.

Nice to meet another fellow countryman:thumbs:

Buy it over steam, its cheaper.

Yeah obviusly cheaper but i dont buy anything online,I just dont trust it.

Especialy giving bank details...Acount numbers etc.

Do you also get Day of defeat source with it?

Im confused to what you actualy get with it:)

Nope. But you do get Half-Life Source (which is just an ever so slightly different version of the original Half-Life) with the Game of the Year Edition. GOTY edition is the standard copy in shops these days, the initial, Vivendi/Sierra published HL2 games do lurk around someplace. Only buy them if they work out cheaper (you'll get CS:S and HL2DM, but not HLS)

I'm not a big fan of buying online either, but Steam is safe. I bought it in shops (my dvd drive broke, so i sold mine for £4 profit) and bought it on steam!

Anyway, in steam theres a 'my games' list, right now the games will be greyed out, when you click 'register product' tomorrow after installing your dvd and put in your cd-key, steam will unlock the greyed out games. Your install covered HL2 singleplayer, and Counter Strike Source. HL2 Deathmatch must be downloaded from the steam servers. Just double click it the 'my games' list and steam will start downloading it.

DOD Source doesn't come with that package, but you can buy it for a small price over steam if you really want it.

edit: also as kupoartist says, you get HL Source, and Half-life 2 : Lost Coast (a single level to play after HL2 with HDR lighting which is beautiful!) These are downloaded from steam too.

Is this still the case with the GOTY edition? I would have thought there would have been a version shipped on that disc.

edit: if you want DOD:S, you can buy it on its own in the shops, but UK prices are often a pitiful £ to $ conversion (HL2 Ep1 is $20 > £20, when it should actually convert as £10). You can also buy a Counter Strike Source retail package that includes Day of Defeat Source and HL2 Deathmatch (though not HL2, HLS or Lost Coast as far as I see).

I have seen HL2DM bundled with some retail package. Not sure if it was the GOTY edition though.

It IS in the GOTY edition, we're just wondering whether the data is physically on the disc :P

1. Yes.

actually i own a CD version... there is like... 5 freak'ing disks! so i just download via steam. did the same with E1, it was a dvd and my dvd drive crashed so i had to dust off an old CD drive.

US has the option of CD or DVD.

Pardon me, Sweden-folk here, only got the DVD ones.

The really fool-proof guide is to have a look on the box and see what you'll get. You should at least get HL2, Lost Coast, CS:S and HL2DM.

I wouldn't count on you getting DoD:S, though.

The only game I ever bought NOT online was Episode 1, which I bought at some gamestop or something, dont remember. Steam is safe, ive bought alot off my grandmas credit cards (at her OK.) And she hasnt complained to me about me spending 7000 dollars or taking them out of the account, so im okay. :D (I meant them framing me :|, I never did that. Or... did I? no.)

Hang on, so DoD:S doesn't come with the GOTY edition? Phew. I thought i missed out because i got the GOTY before DoD:S came out...
