If You hadnt noticed, gordan was fighting the combine in HL1. Ninilath (the big boss of half life 1) was in CHAINS, if u look carefully, he has them round his wrists, which implies that he was captured, by the COMBINE, and Xen are the troops there using there. If u read the poster in Black Mesa East, the 7 hour war? that was after the combine came an conqured the world, and the element ur fighting in HL2 is the human part of the combine.
The G-Man (whoever you may think he is, gordon, goverment etc) obviously doesnt want the combine to succeed. Clever thinking from Valve huh?

Yes,i think the XEN(particularry the smarter vortigaunts) seemed to be slaves in HL1 afaik, but i doubt it was by the combine.... they had somekind of band's aound theyre arms

well, it just seems odd, that the xen creatures were all kinda like slaves etc, and that fact ninalith had chains on, proves some1 was using him, yet he was the big boss of the xen aliens, so who then?! thats right, THE COMBINE!!!! Which means, the G-man, is trying to stop the combine, eitherway you put it :P

In Nova Prospekt, a dead, captured Vortigaunt had the same rings around its arms as they all did in HL1.

in the trainstation if you turn left out of the train then walk on a few metres then turn left again there is a vortiguant sweeping up, being supervised by a combine soldier. Some vortigaunts have joined the rebellion just like humans but some havent.

i think the ones who didn't in fact couldn't

I'm not 100% convinced that the Nihilianth itself is a slave of the combine... If anything, I'd argue that it is of the Combine race itself. Looking at the "Raising the Bar" book, it reveals that the Combine Advisor (seen talking to Breen) is actually a grub like Alien: This member of the Combine race is so far along with technology that it is just basically bag of organs: It has evolved beyond the need to walk or use its arms. It seems to me that the Nihilianth was going the same way: It has no legs, floating instead on some kind of metal, technological platform. it's arms also look pretty weak, and it has a massive head.

That said, it is a very viable conclusion that the Nihlianth was controlled by the Combine: In HL2, Dr Breen is humanity's Nihilianth, a tool for controlling the local population. In Xen's case, the Slaves were controlled by the Nihilianth: we know this, because the Vortiguant say it in HL2 and because they are free. The "Chains" on the Nihlianth may just be symbolic, or a way of maintaining the connection with the Vortiguant.

The vortis also say something like; "We knew that once the lesser master lay slain, the greater must also fall in time..."

I think that the fate of the Nihilanth (weak limbs, floating platform) was Breen's eventual destiny. I think by beating up Xen, we pissed the Combine off and they all came to Earth for revenge.

so, valve probably already have HL3 all figured out then dont they? and when that one comes out everyone will be going "aaaaahhhh so THATS what the G-Man is" etc etc, or "ahhh NOW i understand what this is all about" and once i completed HL2 (took me maybe 15hours, over 3 days) all i wanted was MORE!!! so valve, i wonder what u have up ur sleeve for us next time

maybe the nanilith was a project of the combine. i mean it did look all deformed n stuff. that would explain it being in chains. they dont want their expirament going on a rampage... where are the combine from anyway? is a real combine rather human like. i got the impression that they were extremely evolved humans from the xen universe that used biomechanics to enhance their military strength.

this is certainly an interesting find

*plays through HL again to see if there are more clues like this*

Well, in the citadel near the end of hl2, you do see some xen like creatures walking along the ground, i have some screenshots if you want to see them.

[Edit]

I uploaded them anyway. :)

you mean those things with the pencil like feet and arms? theres concept art of that everywhere...

I uploaded those pictures in my last post.
They are a bit dark though.

oh yeah those things... yeah i was kinda curious about those. at the time i just thought they were more buglike machines... like the gunships

Ninilath is a slave to the combine (speculation seems right). you can hear Ninilath say, "slaves, we are their slaves, we are..."

Ninilath and the vortigaunts both from h-l1 have chains etc. Ninilath controls these creatures from Xen and the combine control Xen and Ninilath.

combine = huge empire taking over the universe. when the resonance cascade happened in black mesa the combine were alerted by the rift caused between our worlds. through this rift they invaded earth after gordon defeated Ninilath (their pawn).

gman does not want the combine to fail. he does not hint at that.

all the gman wants is for you to accomplish your goals. one day gordon may be put to work for the combine by the gman.

the gman is your agent/contractor. he put's you on ebay and factions bid for your services when they need you. so far you have been put to work for the black mesa team and the citizens of city17.

i like how that sounds. ... but why would g-man want the combine to succede? is he a human that somehow came into power with the combine? i mean all you did in hl2 was take out humanity's propaganda star. was that supposed to help the combine or give them no limits on what they can do to earth. :(

sorry, but i think ur wrong about the G-Man, why would he want them to succeed, when u kill the combines pawns, twice now. And the G-Man is the one who made you do both. Why did he bring you back in HL2 otherwise? He obvioulsy could just kill Gordon and be done with it, like in HL1, he says you have a choice, work for him, or die, and if u chose death, u were teleported to fight a load of xen monsters, and it faded, so i'd say the G-Man was AGAINST the combine. My Point of view anyway :P

as the 'slow teleport' is found in hl2 has the ability to teleport you into the future:D, and the ending would suggest gman has the ability to control a 'fast teleport', where the world around you slows, and you can exist and interact within this slowed or stopped time.
then why bother with gordon at all, why not just fast teleport anyone at the combine and take it apart piece by piece.

that is unless gordon is a virtual reality tester, and the GMan is playing his role to make what gordon is experiancing more realistic.

gordon tested the black mesa VR sim in HL1 and now tested the Combine upgrade for this in HL2, who knows who will hire gordon next, HL3 may well see gordon take on dumies in Tusards, or clowns in the circus.

as for the combine. there are the sprayed pictures that indicate combine (came from) Man (came from) Ape. suggesting that the combine is indeed as far past man as man is from ape. even possibly the same speices, just evolved a little more?
