File Extensions

Hi,

Okay it's going to be unavoidable sounding like a total newb here, but does anyone know what all the file extensions used in Source map editing stand for? Stuff like your .vmt's, .bsp's, .ztmp's and a whole host of others I've seen used in the forums and in my compiler window. All I know is that .vmf stands for Valve Map File (even that could be incorrect!).

I can pretty much guess what kinds of files they are based on the context of the discussions but I'd really like to know once and for all what they all mean. Thanks!

vmf=valve map file
vtf=valve texture file
bsp=compiled map
mdl=compiled model
smd=half compiled model
qc=model compiling stuff
thats all i *know*

BSP = Binary Space Partition

It refers to the format of maps for HL, HL2, Quake engine games, Unreal Engine games, and pretty much every 3D game level out there.

Cool, thanks for the info guys/girls. I won't feel so lost now plowing through tutorials and my Steam directories :)

Can I make another request? What does '.wad' stand for? From what I gather it's some sort of texture group file... which may or may not be deprecated in HL2? And what of this 'Wally' program?

Thanks in advance.

wally is a program to make wads. wads were the texture paks that hl1 used. I believe there is a way to convert them to hl2 files, but basically thats all outdated stuff. :)
