when i try to start HL2, i get an error that says "Unable to load filesystem_steam.dll".

My specs are PIV 2.4, FX5600 256MB version, 512 Mb ram

Any suggestions?

Same problem here. Anyone have a solution to this? Looks like it's a pretty rare error.

Same problem for me :(

Strange thing is, it was working earlier in the morning the first time I started it, but the next time it came up with the error

And you did no changes inbetween?

This is getting annoying, trying to fix this on a 56k and there's a lot of downloading when I'm trying different stuff. If anyone knows a solution, please speak up. ;)

I have this too, only I was able to play the game for the 24+ hours it took to beat before this error popped up. The steam networks are clogged and I can't re-download any of the files. This makes me very sad...

I only got to play that game for about half an hour, being truly amazed and loving it, even though I didn't get to use any weapons (I was taking my sweet time taking everything in).

Then to have it ripped away after getting a taste of it, it's so vicious, hehe. I've searched around a lot though and so far haven't been able to find a solution :(

I didn't get to play but still, I have reinstalled steam, deleted the cgf files and the HL2 map so it installs a default directory -> nothing helps

Anyone been able to find a solution? I'm still unable to get it running, even after going and re-downloading the game.
I'm almost getting frustrated now.

I got the message "Unable to load filesystem_steam.dll" when I tried running the SDK tools through their exe rather than through Steam's menu. I just ran it through Steam rather than my desktop shortcut and it worked.

This probably won't help you with regular HL2 but I know how you feel about getting a taste of the game only to have it die on you 9 chapters in.

;(

I tried running the actual exe once (The second total time I tried to run the program), and it came up with the problem, so I just went back to trying to run it through Steam, but then not even that worked.

I'm kinda losing hope for finding a solution though, particularly after reading that official support offered is often not helpful at all.

You can't start Half Life 2 from a shortcut for some reason. Start Steam and then try to launch HL2.

As I said, I only tried to launch it from the actual file once. After that I've only been trying running it from Steam, but to no avail.

So this issue is not resolved yet? Ugh. I wanna play this thing before I die.

I get this same error when I try to run the SDK, everything else works fine. It only happened now after I downloaded the last update of the SDK though... it was working before that time...

error: unable to load sourcesdk\bin\filesystem_steam.dll

*sigh*

Been a few weeks now... and I really want to try this game. Help!

aye,

same problem here, trying to install hl trough a different dvdrom player now, hope this somehow solves the problem:/

k, that clearly didn't help, but here is the solution:

in your root directory of steam you find steam.dll, copy this dll file to all your the bin directories where the filesystem_steam.dll is giving problems, it will work afterwards!

cheers,
spr

That didn't work for me. It looks as if the version\file size that exist bettween the root steam/bin and half-life 2 deathmatch\bin filesystem_steam.dll's are very disimilar. Also it looks as if the filesystem_steam.dll that exists in my half-life 2 deathmatch\bin is newer.

Anyway this is very annoying. DM was working last night and this morning is not. I wonder if an update to steam broke it.

Same Issue...what Is The Fix?!

Hey guys...I have the same filesystem_steam.dll issue...nothing seems to fix it...any more ideas? I can't even play single player HL2. :(

I have this error, too.

I got it the first time when trying out Hammer. Maybe that causes it?

I have this both on CS:S and HL2:DM but not only HL2 single player.

Hey everyone , I realise this isnt the most recent thread , but since nobody posted an answer. A friend (post above) got his problem fixed by me sending my filesystem_steam.dll to him and him overwriting his.
So if you know someone that has a working counterstrike or hl2 , you can probably get it fixed like that.

It's just an idea. but look in ure Windows folder for the same file, that's how i fixed my Miles Problem of Mss.dll. then Drag it into the steam folder with the corresponding file and replace it.

only an idea but hope it works

my error says cannot load engine.ddl wenever i click on half-life 2 in steam, what the hell

Have you got Hl.dll in your windows folder? cause i just click on the icon and it works :hmph:

I've sorted mine!

Anyone who's having problems with the Can't load filesystem_steam.dll could try what I did to solve it. I had an old version of steam on another partition (from a dual boot Windows98/2000 drive) where all the HL2/CS:S files were, but I was using the steam.exe on another old install. I placed a shortcut the desktop from the version of steam that had the HL2/CS:S files in and hey presto, no problems.

I've now deleted my "rogue" version!!!! Happy New Year!!!!!!!

I found that if I copied the older version of filesystem_steam.dll from Valve\Steam\bin into Valve\Steam\SteamApps\[user]\half-life 2\bin it started working again.

How long the fix will work for I have no idea but it seems ridiculous that this has not been addressed officially yet.

Harumph!

That may work on Windows9X but in WIndows 2000 the "helpful" installer/SFC puts the other version back in. Even if you delete it (or all the \bin folder) and try to re-download it. The installer puts it back in!

:sniper: Valve/Steam

Still, it's worth the hassle as it is a superb game.

Well then tell them with a support ticket on the steampowered site.

They are not going to know without you telling them, and how you fixed the problem so they can be pointed in the right direction, for a faster fix.

I got the problem while running Hammer. It doesn't kick me out or crash, it just won't let me compile my maps. It started happening right after it updated (about an hour ago). I think the new update broke it. I hope they come out with a new .dll fast. I want to get back to work.

This worked for me:

Deleting the contents of E:\Steam\SteamApps\darkultra\half-life 2\bin

Why did you need to bump a thread that's this old.

Why? Please tell me for the love of God.

gimme a break

Maybe because no one other than darkultra gave a suggestion that worked and I wanted to state that. Who cares how old it is? Obviously it's still valuable since I have to look it up tonight.

Don't you have more important things to do? :frown:

Just send a PM, nub.

It works!

*bump!*

old as it is, this thread is exactly what the doctor ordered. Don't mind the Nublings that TROLL useful threads in an effort to feel superior over someone that simply posts a thankyou to keep an effective thread alive. ;)

Oh and go ahead & call me names bitches, I'll tell your mom all about it later.

We troll? Goodness, you have no proficiency in Internet terminology AT ALL. GTFO to your closest Wiki and learn about it please, then come back and get banned.

I'm feeling nice, so I'll save you a trip to the Wiki; trolls shoot out flamebait. Bumping uber-old threads are going to get onto the nerves of people, who will then want to unload their flamethrowers on the troll.

In other words, you are the troll, looking for a nice flame to warm yourself up, and will undoubtedly be owned in the very near future.

Also, I'm not flaming you. If you think I am, as I said, brush up on your Internet terminology.

Lastly; come on, this thread isn't really useful besides darkultra's post. A thread full of people's complaints about a bug discovered in 2004, and it's a one likely to be fixed (immediate bugs are often flushed out quickly). How useful is that? You don't see people posting threads, asking help on this topic.
