Loads of people makea a big deal out of it?

I mean, i was speaking to my mates in my lecture today, and when i said i hadnt seen The Godfather (they were talking about taking someone to the matresses and i said 'the hell does that mean?', one of them went 'you havent seen it!' really loud, causing our lecturer to spin around and embarrass us by asking what we were talking about.

I for one havent seen:

The SOund of Music (Almost every girl i know cant believe i havent seen it)
The Godfather..any of them
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Cassablanca

at just a quick think. Im sure theres some other awesome classics i havent seen, but i wondered if you guys get it if you havent seen a 'big movie'?

Transformers is one my mates bug me about but I think it looks shite and Applocalyspe (Spelling!) Now.

I've not seen any of the Godfather films. Or the Omen films. Or Return of the King. Or Casablanca.

Nor do I care.

Godfather
Casablanca
Blade Runner
Grindhouse

Also; I have seen Blade Runner, and it's highly overrated.

<gasp>

/takes step away from Pi Mu Rho so as to not be struck by lightning meant for him

still havent seen Il Dolce Vita, Godard's le chinoise, the Decalogue, City of God, Amores Perros, Red White and Blue trilogy, Fight Club ...others

<double gasp>

oh Samon why do you hurt me so? ... /puts silencer on barrel, dons black leather gloves

I thought it perfectly portrayed a dark, dirty, futuristic city with excellent use of visual effects and technology. It had a very deep philosophical story and excellent acting across the board. To me, it is probably one of the most believable science fiction movies conceived. A lot of people watch it for the first time expecting a lot of action, which is not what Blade Runner is about at all.

As for the topic question:

Gone With the Wind
Citizen Kane
Dr. Strangelove

I will get around to seeing these eventually though, I love movies and I watch will watch any that is recommended to me.

City of God and Fight Club are great films, and I have The Three Colours Trilogy queued on netflix :P

Blade Runner I enjoyed, but didn't think it was that great... whoops... I was excited when I saw syd mead in the credits though for what it's worth :E

From what everyone's mentioned, I've not seen godfather 2 or 3, casablanca, sound of music, the omen, grindhouse

To add my own, I've not seen scarface, or the saw films (which everyone seems to rave about)

The Sound of Music
Reservoir Dogs
Cassablanca
Citizen Kane
Gone With The Wind
Fight Club
dollars trilogy

I think it's difficult to accurate judge a film especially if you compare it to modern day film ..I mean I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of people if given a chooice to pick the better film between say LoTR and Casablanca they'd pick LoTRO ..even though it's vastly inferior

seeing classic films from within a vacuum is missing part of the bigger picture

I think the real question is, what films have I seen that people make a big fuss about? Once I figure that out on one hand, I can determine all the others.

Like others have said, I haven't seen any of the godfather films, Cassablanca, Citizen Kane, Grind House, scarface, and oh so many more.

Oldies: Pulp Fiction, Kieślowski's works, cult classics in general. New: I don't watch films any more (for the most part) so I haven't watched any of those new Spartan mighty-morphin' robots. :p

Don't get me wrong - I love the setting for Blade Runner. Scott nailed it perfectly. It's just that the story doesn't do much for me.

As for old films, my favourites:

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Forbidden Planet
Ice Cold in Alex

Classics.

Amores Perros was enjoyable, but overrated. City of God took me a while to watch; it was brilliant. Anyone seen the series City of Men? Worth picking up?

Haven't see Casablanca, Seven Samurai, One Upon a Time in America and Lawrence of Arabia. Yet.

Also never seen a Woody Allen movie before. Friends been bugging me to watch Manhattan.

GASP

no, you're right, the story took a backseat to the setting, atmosphere and film noir aspects

As for old films, my favourites:

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Forbidden Planet
Ice Cold in Alex

Classics.

had to double check, thought it was porn or at the very least the story of a woman and her love of necrophelia :E :O

Blade Runner
Citizen Kane (I stared to see it, but it was too boring)
Gone With The Wind

The Sound of Music
Reservoir Dogs
Cassablanca
Citizen Kane
Gone With The Wind
Fight Club
dollars trilogy

I haven't even heard of some of the movies listed here...

The Color Purple
Moulin Rouge
The Thin Man

I do plan to see these someday though...

Alien and Psycho are two of my favorite movies of all time, trust me you won't regret seeing them.

I can't believe some people haven't seen Casablanca, considering how often it's on at Christmas.

That's a great film. Can you believe the Americans renamed it 'Desert Attack'?

Fight Club
Resovoir Dogs
Donny Darko

/EDIT I mean to see the first two sometime, but I cbf'd the last one.

//EDIT 12 Angry Men is a great film imho.

Also; I have seen Blade Runner, and it's highly overrated.

'bout ****ing time someone said it

Anyways, I've not seen a large chunk of classic horror films (Dawn the the Dead, The Omen, Friday the 13th, Halloween...etc) nor do I have any plans to.

There is much disgrace in this thread, especially Blade Runner related.

Scarface
The Godfather Trilogy
Blade Runner
Cassablanca

I know there's quite a few others, but they don't come to mind right now.

Blimey. I'm actually quite envious - i'd pay good money to see these movies again for the first time.

I'm so sheltered.

I fear seeing those movies because I think I'll be ultimately disappointed. People have told me so much about them and built 'em up so impressively I think that's all that can come of it. Same thing happened with The Exorcist, Boondock Saints, Dawn Of The Dead (original), and 300.

The only one I think I'm in no danger of having ruined is Blade Runner. Just a hunch.

Just go in expecting them to be crap. After all, most people have shite taste :)

Transformers is one my mates bug me about but I think it looks shite

DONNN'TTTT SEEEEE ITTTTT!!!

Oh, and I haven't seen the godfather, or scarface, or pulp fiction.

Omg you too? I love each and every one of those films. I even had a walking robbie the robot toy when i was younger but i let it walk into my dog when he was asleep one day and it got torn to bits :(

Boondock Saints is a great movie but there is NOTHING that is more overhyped.

Gawd, Boondock Saints sucked so much and yet so many people talk about it like it's the greatest movie ever. :x

Edit: Wow, it received a whopping 19% over at Rotten Tomatoes. Not too far from shit.

It didn't suck, myself and many of my friends thought it was pretty good. It's definitely overrated though. Although, I'm much more likely to go along with IMDB's rating of 7.8 than Rotten Tomatoes. The collective opinions of tens of thousands of users > those of a handful of critics.
