Try not to put any spoilers, because I'm going to try FF VIII for the first time. FF 8 for the roman numeral impaired.

I thought FF8 looked really nice when I saw the demo in the store (653 years ago), and it must have left a big impression for me to still remember, because that game is old as shit, as one of the last games to come out for the Playstation 1, or was that 9?

Anyway, well I'm about to try it, I hope it's fun.

Here you can vote for your favorite FF game, evAr.

You will have to pick one. We all know what one will win, but I'm curious to see how the series ranks.

THERE IS A 10 POLL LIMIT, I DID MY BEST WITH THE 10 CHOICES.:D

It's too hard to decide. I give up. You go first.

3 was great back in the day and more recently, i really enjoyed 12
but 7 will always be my fav

The only ones listed here are the main options, things like Mystic Quest, and X-2 or whatever wasn't room for. So, if that was your favorite one, get a new favorite

I played Mystic Quest for a few hours, it seemed good. I just don't have time to play games very much.

So the only ones I've beaten are the two that are my favorites.

they were FFIII (US-SNES) and FFX (US-PS2)

I liked them enough to play through to the end. Granted, these are the only two FF games I bought, besides FF X-2, which I returned to the store cuz I didn't like it.

And well, I haven't decided yet. FFIII was great, but I started to get a little bored near the end. FFX was really cool, but the blitzball really pained me. I just wasn't interested, and I never liked Waku until near the end of the game. A beach dude/surfer or whatever just felt out of place in a game with swords and armor and magic. But he came through though didn't he? I liked that girl Rikku, and Yuna with her summon beast was killer.

FFX was a little easy though.

Anyway, I'm probably going to pick FFX as my favorite, but I want to try FF8 for a day or two first.

8 was my fave because it was the only one i really really finished it.

I have a feeling Warbie's going to be pissed. I just did some research, and saw Warbie's avatar in a screenshot of FF6, which I chose as one of the FF games I had to omit, to fit the 10 poll limit. :(

i only played final fantasy 7 and 2 for snes, but i liked FF2 just because of its awesome 2d graphics. damn 3d.

I'm going to go play the third one now, on my psp. :)

Where's Tactics...

:(

Out of those choices, I'd place 12 as my favorite though. Not because it's the newest but the changes that were made were simply all brilliant. That and I love the guy's previous work.

Virus, you NEED to play 12, it will start a bit slow but once it gets going, it's utterly amazing. FF8 is nice and all but it doesn't hold a candle to XII.

Play it. Now.

i figured it would be good. I rarely judge a book by its cover, but seeing as this is a video game, which involves mostly art, and the cover was art... well, put it this way, I thought the box art was absolutely beautiful, making me wonder how nice the graphics are. I think it's safe to assume the gameplay should be on point by now, i think they know better than to try that FFX-2 crap with microphones and dance costumes (WTF)

yeah, I wanted to try it, but I was going to wait and see if it comes down in price and/or comes out for the new consoles or ... *gasp* the PC

i do still have my Playstation 2. the last game i played was GT4, when it first came out. (a WHILE ago)

I like the one where the males and females are indistinguishable.

8 was my fave because it was the only one i really really finished it.

LOl we're like long lost twins when it comes to games.

But FFVI is widely regarded as the best FF although the opinions are divided.
FFVIII has a highly flawed battle and leveling system, but it's still may favorite.

edit: honestly virus I cannot imagine you enjoying any FF game, I would pirate it before buying.

FF3/6

It was the best and last of the traditional FF games. The series went in a new direction with no.7 - a more steam punky, anime 'cool' (with lots of annoying adolescents), cinemetic experience - still very good, but lacking the high fantasy and the charm that attracted me in the first place.

Too much of this ...

Click me

... has been lost since FF3.

VII, it's my favourite RPG. Not saying it's the greatest or most epic, but in terms of enjoyability and story nothing's topped it for me yet. KotoR came close.

FFVIII was... well, for a while, it felt epic. But somewhere in the 3rd disc it just went crazy ridiculous, and the 4th disc was just weird.

But god I love that opening cutscene. And anything to do with Garden.

FF7 for me. I liked the whole steampunk thing, and felt it had the richest atmos and most distinctive characters. The whole bitmap-background/3D-characters mixed deal with the graphics utterly blew me away back in the day, too.

BTW, bad move missing out FF6 (3) ;) I think that's a hot contender for most popular in the series. You should have dropped FF5 or one of the ones unreleased in the West since I doubt many people here would have played that one.

Can I get this straight - am I right in thinking that only FF1, 4 and 6 had western releases and were numbered as FF1, 2 and 3 (although the original FF2 came out in Origins)?

VIII was awesome to begin with but failed to hold my interest past the second disc. As has already been said (and not just in this thread :P), the battle system was flawed, aswell as alot of other things IMO. Like the way you upgraded your weapons, which felt to me like it was tuned more towards getting you to buy the guide to find all the parts rather than actually find them yourself. But then I know people who loved VIII for these things, so idunno...

Oh, but Triple Triad? Best. Minigame. Ever.

Also, Garden was just Harry Potter with moar gunblades. The fortress/craft/whatever itself was pretty cool, but the organisation (SeeD?) felt a bit weird to me. So... they're kids, going to school... to become hired mercenaries? Just didn't quite fit >_>

12 is the best for me i love the new battle system and it has a great story and atmosphire.
I never finished 7 but looking at the poll i might continue it if i can find my save.

I have not finished 6 I remember getting up to an Airship and then getting creamed by my inexperience. The best of the old FFs though. 7 Comes in as my fav for the way the changed the series. 12 was a good effort but wasn't all there.

Between 6 and 7 I'd stay with 7 as I liked the story more, and they both have great stories.

III was always my fav for a long time, then there was IX, but now there is XII and it is my favorite now.

(Tactics is actually favorite FF-related game, but since it isn't really a numbered version in the series, it shouldn't be included here of course.)

7 was my fave. Played it the most and it was my first FF. FMV sequences blew me away when I first saw them.

The only one I completed too. Didn't enjoy 8 much at all. 10 was good.

Heh. It's true, VIII was more geared towards FAQ runners. I enjoyed the assassination storyline, but... seriously, parts of it got riiiidddiiiccccuuullooouss.

I disliked how it pretended to offer you a complex gameworld but it failed after the 2nd/3rd disc to make it matter. I thought it would be an epic storyline about war and shit but it was just a standard 'Freaking Weird FF Plot Involving Time Travel and Magic'.

I could go for a war in an FF storyline. A decent one, too.

I like 12 a lot.
Perhaps i wasn't raised properly cuz i have never played ff 7 :-/

Funny that you omitted in your poll the one that is considered by many many fans and by me the best FF game to date which is FF6
So I can't vote... :(

VII is the only one I've finished. I really like XII, but stopped playing it awhile back and haven't picked it up again since. The combat is good fun when it's something like a challenging boss fight, but the rest of the time when it's just grinding through an area (or just plain grinding as is the case in my game) it can get pretty grating and lose it's enjoyment. I'm really starting to despise the license board system aswell, as while it seems to encourage choice at first, everyone inevitably ends up the same anyway, which almost completely eliminates the premise of class (save for different gear/weapons). That is unless you restrict yourself and only go for certain abilities, but I've never liked self-imposed challenges like that.

On the story side of things, I really really liked where it was going at first. From the opening CGI (awesome!) and the first sequence, I really got the feeling I was in for something epic, but I feel like it's only partially delivered on that. The more mature plot is definitely a refreshing change, as are the more sporadic cut-scenes, but both these things are just... very not Final Fantasy, so it comes off feeling a little too foreign or plastic I guess. I'm really hoping the character development side of things picks up more towards the end aswell, as they've been a little too rigid by RPG standards so far, amazingly emotive cutscene graphics aside.

Also, am I the only one that didn't hold much love for FFX? *holds up flame shield*

lol

I don't need to pirate it, I have a lot of money, and I prefer to pay people for making great games, because I think they deserve it.

When FFIII came out for Super Nintendo, I was like 14 or 15 years old, and I was blown away by it, and I was still really impressed with the Super Nintendo as well. I really loved this one, and was my first experience with FF.

I also really liked 10. See, I don't mind turn based RPG's, although I prefer real-time ones, as long as there is skill, technique, and strategy involved with the turn based RPG, then It's still fun, and the story and CG (in the disc based games) make it more fun.

Initially I liked 7 (which was one that I forgot to mention as one of the games I bought), but I wasn't into the new steam punky anime aspect either. I also kept falling asleep while playing it. It was like, every time I would try to play further in the game I would nod off. Eventually I came to the conclusion that it was boring as hell, and sold it before finishing it.

I tried my best, I'm not the FF guru, so I'm surprised I didn't screw it up worse.

My mistake, I'm sorry.

Where is tactics?
tactics is a different type of game series and there wasn't room in the poll for the series itself, much less spin-offs. Sorry.

My favorite is FFI, cause its the only one I finished. I also played FFII, but it got really frusterating for me after a while so I stopped.

FF9 for sure, that game just sucked me in for some reason

none of the ones on the poll

*waits for shooting*

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
most addicting game i've ever played.
Next to starcraft that is.

Tactics and 7 tie for me...though 12 is really good, 1 is awesome, and 2 and 3 were badass.*US versions*

Beat VII, X, and XII. Started X-2. 100% completed XII.
Surprised VI wasn't on the list.

VII is good, but overrated.

X had the best story of those 3 (in terms of characters), but was almost completely linear. I wish its combat system was used again. Some bad minigames.

X-2, from what I've seen, is a definite black sheep. Actually a decent game if you can get past its teen-bop presentation (and its reinvention of Yuna). Also has the best minigames.

XII has the problem of having a really good story it has a hard time getting you to care about. There's less good/evil and more shades of grey. Gambits are a lifesaver and add interesting strategy to boss fights, but the weird gambit-store fourth wall breech was weird and limited the system oddly.

Anyways, not voting without having played VI and Tactics. Even though they're not options.

I thought X had a pretty shallow plot, or atleast I had a really hard time caring about any of the characters cause they were so. goddamn. sterotyped. Granted I already knew most of the twists from watching a friend play it through before getting it myself. I think, like (some) other games in the series, the premise was awesome but the execution was a little weak (again, graphics aside, those are pretty much a given). I also couldn't stand the linearity but that's another issue. If the combat was a little more fast-paced and less complicated on the upgrade side of things (GAMEFAQS MUCH?!?!?!) I would've really liked it, but again it wears on you after awhile.

Also, Blitzball sucks =/

Tactics and VI should have been swapped in for I and II. But whatever. Tactics is the best game to carry the Final Fantasy name. So good in fact, that it's a shame that it got the 'Final Fantasy' name forced upon it. VI is the best 'main series' Final Fantasy, though the best use of the battle system and interface has to be in Finaru Fantaji 3.1, brought over to the western market by Microsoft and rebranded 'Windows 3.1'. It's just a shame they removed the moogles and all three female character types. Speaking of which...
Oh, but Triple Tribadism? Best. Minigame. Ever.
Fixed.
