Finally new videos

... The game being STALKER, yet you post it in the Half-Life 2 forum. Okay.

Cheater, is it the video showing off the day to night transition? In which case, it's been posted.

what is this "STALKER" fad, everyones talking about it.

what happend to codename gordan?

yeah, it's.

Sorry for posting here, but i know that we are all interested in seeing the upcoming generation of fps games and their engines.

king John, STALKER is a first person shooter/RPG mix. It's one of the "next gen" first person shooters coming out.. so, yeah. How can you not have heard about it, or seen a video, or what have you?

if you like hl2, impressed by hl2's e3 videos, you should also be impressed by stalker and far cry and their engines. While doom3, i'm not so sure, but myself i'm impressed by all of them

I feel the same.

However, I want Far Cry more than STALKER, and about the same as HL2 (HL2 is a tad higher on my want list, though)

Doom 3 looks nice, but I have no real interest in it

I downloaded it yesterday from filewhore, very impressive especially where it does the time shift sequence and you see the animals moving around grazing, whilst the flowers and grass blows in the breeze, etc. The subject matter might not be to everyones tastes, but there is no denying that it is a beautiful environmental engine. I'd love to see something like GTA using that level of detail.

hmmm their FAQ says Q4 2003, seems a little too optimistic if you ask me...but if they pull it off they will definitely win sales with the delay of HL2. I'm definitely going to buy this....multiplayer coop must be awesome!

I don't see anything special about this game what so ever.

The lighting isn't revolutionary in any respect, it looks much like splinter cells lighting, but yet people always have to find one thing that makes a game seem like the next sliced bread invention. The story lacks depth for my tastes, and rpg's tend to be boring and repetitive.

Wow, the grass moves in the wind... As if no game has done that before.
Wow, day and night sequences!.. Yea, again like no one did that before.

Looks like another standard rpg to me, all the everquest junkies will rejoice.

if this is going to be the next must have game then i wont spoil my experiance by watching vids, like i did HL2.

Lol. People are so stupid sometimes. Why the sh*t post this in the HL2 discussion forum? Argh. >__<

ok let's calm down, don't you see few people are responding positively to something i find cool and that i want to show you all so that you all can share my excitement ??? am i ****ing your mom by doing this ??? if not , stop insulting peolple.

I don't think Stalker looks impressive at all. Nor does it look particularly next-gen.

Meh, it'll probably be good, the videos just don't do much for me.

everything looks cool in the videos except the characters and animations. Hl2 has just raised to bar too high for some developers to reach i guess.

The lighting was quite nice, as were the weather effects. But it almost feels like they just tacked those new features onto an last-gen engine engine.

They look pretty intergrated to me. Also which particular last -gen engine do you have in mind? I can't think of one that is out there yet that even remotely deals with the sort of scale VS detail that the stalker engine is clearly capable of?

Name and shame them? I'm interested to hear about these games?

God, is it just me, or are some of the people here so blatantly fanboyish that they won't even give any game other than HL2 a chance?

Sad but true.

orginaly i wasnt very interested in this game, but the more i see of it, the more i want it....looks like another one to add to my already large list of wanted games.

Day and night stuff... obvious one, GTA III and vice city, WWII Online. Ton's of other non-FPS titles, warcraft III, the simcity games. All real-time day/night.

Moving grass in wind, MMOG Starwars Galaxies for one.

I'm not a hl2 fanboy (I could care less about what does what, aslong as it's fun), I'm just letting some folks know that these things aren't really that new.

Weird... this is exactly what i was going to say, only there are no capital letters and 'originaly' is misspelt...

why do u bash him? you realise this is infact Off-topic chat? Considering yur registered here means yur definately interested in computer games, so why not post some thats related to ...computer games? STALKER looks like its going to be an incredible game, i myself cant wait and am looking forward to it more than hl2 (looks down ashamed) yes its true, i just lost all my hype really when valve started lying out the wazoo and getting everything wrong and pulling off a stunt like steam. I love games emphasizing co-op, and stalker does that, as u can go thru the entire campaign with friends. Good post imo

I used to go crazy for hl2, but now i lost my hype for hl2 too, not becuz valve lie and they release the troublesome steam(i don't know whether valve really lie to us and steam works fine for the moment). I just feel like it doesn't deserve all my attention after seeing many other hardcore upcoming games. Well i will still buy hl2, but i know that hl2 is not the only one.

When I saw this thread's title, I thought it was about new HL2 vids being released on steam...

There's like 1 or 2 guys spamming these forums about stalker. Ignore them. It isn't a fad.

"misspelt" is misspelled.

LOL I'd hardly say that GTA or SWG even remotely compare enginewise to Stalker. They are both cartoon engines, and the rendering in SWG is frankly dire.

uuhm...stuff doesn't have to be new or revolutionary to look good...and you can't deny that this game looks good.

One of the common criticisms about Stalker is the apparent blandness of the environments compared to other games. What you have to realise with stalker is that roughly 60% of the environments are taken directly from the layout and buildings that make up the town of Chernobyl and the surrounding areas. Therefore they possess a real world logic in their nature and design compared to pretty much most other games out there.

It's a case of putting skin(plot) on the skeleton (world) as opposed fitting the skeleton to the skin. It's an interesting approach that I can't think has been tried before. Most game environments generally make little sense in real world terms beyond the rudimentary. The only ones that have attempted to are probably GTA and Mafia, but primarily they have concentrated on externals.

Stalker and Far Cry... ugh... I don't see why people rant and rave about these averagish games that will most likely flop.

Care to qualify why you think so?

Far Cry, I just never got into. The minute I saw the ugly use of normal, specular, bump mapping, the below average animations and models, uninteresting plot, etc,- I just couldn't see huge environments balancing it out to be really good (It'll still be fun I'm sure).
Stalker I was into for a while but I have to agree that it does look bland. Some could say that it is to be true to real life but I always felt games (and any art form) were supposed to express the intentions of the author and create an effect in the player (one of the top ten mistakes in young writers is to write too realistically and instead of creating tension and drama, bore the reader). The graphics are on par with any next-gen game (though I don't see it as rich or interesting as HL2; characters, colours, architecture, etc). I am not a big fan of non-linear games unless, like Deus Ex tried to, there really is an interesting world with lots of characters and sub plots and environments and unique goals. The gameplay looks to be, so far, a little dry. I definitely admire some of the neat stuff Stalker is doing but it's not my cup of tea.
Doom3 I like. The graphics are top notch, the gameplay will be great, the story will be exciting, it'll be scary. Good stuff.

Lack of story, Sn7? Not so.

The thing about Stalker's story is that its designed so that the way it progrsses depends on how you play. But there is indeed a story line, and it branches off in 8 different ways depending on your actions.

Most games, like HL2 and D3, have this lenier story and lenier game to drive it. the game makers tell you whats going on and what you have to do, then provide you with a straight path to travel, from point A to point B, to accomplish these things. the entire story is laid out for you. Its like reading a book, but living it. Its like watching a movie, but interacting with it.

Other games, like Deus Ex and Stalker, create a intricate and complex world with a history, and allow you to make a future. They give you backstory, then suggest to you what you might do next. After that, YOU make the story. Instead of walking from point A to point B in someone elses story, you are free to make your own.

In short, because Stalker allows for so many possibilities where other games are lenier, i would say it actually has more of a story.
