Every time I see a screenshot of someone's desktop or something, they always have Firefox as their web browser. I'm using Internet Explorer and not one desktop has that or Netscape or anything. I've also seen good things told about it in places, so I was wondering if it was somehow better that Internet Explorer; If it is, should I get it? Thanks.

Browse faster, huh? I don't know if that will have much of an impact on me and my ISDN sattelite :(. Luckily, high-speed's coming to the area I'm in (or so I've heard), but I'll check it out tommorow. Thanks for the link.

Tabbed browsing... and it just rox...

its good but it has its faults aswell....namely this....

You think that's bad. I use Opera and it uses around 100MB+ but I've gotten use to using it now to bother switching.

Session saver + mouse gestures + adblock + tabbed browsing = why i <3 ff

And yes, get firefox, download many many extensions, browse the internets in comfort :)

your missing the main one, not as many gapping security holes in firefox. which means less chance of being hacked

if 1 ie flaw is found, the whole world goes crazy, but when there are 3+ firefox vulnerabilities found at once, noone seems to care, even when some of they are new dangerous ones, or ones 5+ years old . .

If you're still using IE, you might as well get off the internets.

Err... because you'd think that a multi-billion $ corporation such as MS would actually test their products before releasing them... It's not just a simple "oh no another bug in IE", companies can lose tons of money through IE's flaws (haX0rz).

It's really rare to find an IE exploit that could actually cause direct damage though...
The whole time i used it, i was only able to seriously exploit it twice
And one was a macromedia plugin exploit, and the other was the users fault if it worked
I always used to make exploit sites and send em to friends on aim :)
It actually sucks now that everyone uses FF cuz i can't anymore

If you use IE, just turn off active scripting completely, and don't be a moron
If you do that, you really don't have any more security problems than ff

Opera user here - quite happy. It's got a large amount of settings that can be overwhelming if you are a newbie to online browsing, but once you get it set, it's awesome. Of all the features I use most, the zoom feature with the mouse wheel is the most used. IE will zoom a tiny bit, but Opera will zoom wherever I want it. Very handy, considering every goofball who ever made a web page has a different idea about font sizes and layout.

sixthree, you can say that about every product/service, and the size doesn't necessarily matter.

Soon as hackers/scripters star focusing more on FireFox you'll see it's not as uber secure as most would probably think. IMO.

IE works just fine. i have enough shit on my computer without firefox cluttering up my beautiful harddrtive.

IE uses more...

does it? well when i used it, it'd take half the time to load and i'm sure it only took about 14/15mb at most

I use IE, rarely get viruses, often then due to some ahem torrenting i may have done.
Not too fussed about having the tabbed browsing in ff, one day i may convert, but i have no need atm.

On the whole IE uses less ram than FF, just did a test. Opened firefox and then 8 tabs all of the same page. Then opened IE 8 times with teh same page as I used in FF and the results are pretty clear. FF used 25mb for 8 tabs open and 8 instances of IE (8 Pages) used approx. 15mb each so that comes to approx 120mb. I know its not exactly teh same using tabs instead of windows, but it does show that you can use 8 pages in FF that uses alot less ram (almost 100mb less) than 8 pages in IE.

The internet should only be explored with IE, YOU HEATHENS!

FF is more unstable for me but i'm just to addicted to tabbed browsing and especially the many options, which can easly be enchacned by extensions which are very easy to get. You simply get them trough an option in firfox, it installes them automaticly, and they are all in a nice order on the main page of mozilla.

Anyway about it beeing faster, the time it takes to start up when clicked on icon is longer them with IE, but a simple hack makes it a lot faster when surfing.

As far as it beeing safer, IMO it is, if only cause it is not as popular as IE and not from the by hackers hated M$, so there aren't that many attempts to exploit it by hackers.

That's because when they are found they get fixed quick. How often do you see a known EI security flaw get fixed 6+ months after it was descovered...?

i remember seeing on a site vulnerabilities in firefox that hadnt been fixed months after they were found.

Picture
Both loaded Google initialy and then went to HalfLife2.net
And IE and FF seem to load equally as fast on my system. Plus my FF is running 4 extentions.

I tried using firefox, but the tabbed browsing and everything sucks, Opera makes it much simpler and more accessible, and it looks nicer... Firefox just seems to clunky and unresponsive

I <3 IE. At my workplace, I get to use IE7, which is rather awesome. It has tabs at the top, too, which further removes me from any need of downloading Firefox.
In my opinion, too many people are downloading Firefox just because it's the "cool" thing to do, and because they think Microsoft is actually out to get them.

I have used Firefox for like 6 months and never used tabs. Why not simply open a new window?

Or because of the huge resource of extentions (AdBlock, Mouse Gestures, Advanced Tabbed Browsing, Weather Information, SideBars, FlashGot, etc, etc, etc), it's Built-In features (Bookmarked Searching [awesome] and Download Manager), it's higher frequency of updates, and it's infinitely lower rate of picking up ad/spyware. Before I hoped over to FF, I'd run SpyBot and AdAware every day and it would come up with atleased a few new pieces of spyware. After FireFox, I run it once a week and usualy come up with nothing at all. Not to mention it's ability to use advanced pipelining to load pages faster.

I was verrrry reluctant to switch over when my friends were using it last year. They showed it off to me and I kind of brushed it off, saying I was just fine with IE. Then I actually borthered to try it out for awhile.
Why not simply open a new window?
Alot of us like to conserve taskbar space.

Well, if Firefox ever becomes mainstream, you know that people will actually start writing spyware to exploit the vulnerabilities. And Internet Explorer IS extension-able, too.

You get negative e-penis points for using IE. That's for sure.

Oh yah, because I didn't just say that a page back.
-.-
/end sarcasm

It has become alot more mainstream than it was, say a year ago. But I've still not had any spy/adware problems.
That day hasnt come yet, but I'm sure it will. Untill then I'll be kicking back with my 0% of spyware/adware picked up from internet browsing.

And I'm just going to avoid sites that shove all that crap on your computer. Everyone wins, especially me.
