Firewall - Can I play HL2?

Ok, a few days ago Chris_D emailed Valve asking whether or not you would have to be connected to steam the first time you played. Valve said there would be a 2 week (approximately) crossover period where you would have to do so.

Here's my problem, the game comes out on Tuesday and I only have about a week to play it before my life becomes really busy/complicated (getting married, starting internship, new job), but I goto a school with a firewall that prevents me from connecting to steam. Does this mean I won't be able to play it the day it comes out?! Does this mean I may never ever ever ever get to play?!?!

Is that what you guys think about Valve's comment?

urm, the only thing i can suggest is to ask the network admin to open up the ports. Short of that...enable you PC's account on 56k or something..i mean you could use a mobile phone for that...and then play in offline mode..

I mean assuming you have a mobile phone, which is kinda up to date, it should havea built in modem. The speed swill SUCK..but atleast you will have the 1337ness of hl2

For the time being, however, you say that I should be able to use my cell phone to connect? Interesting... I'll have to look into this more. Oh, and yes, I have about 3 days to play the game, but I have every intention of finishing it in that timeframe .
