Ummmm..

It's not bad, but try your hand at something more comlicated than that.
Just something like a table lamp is good practice as it requires several types of primitives and alterations. Next thing to try is maybe a gun, or character model (simple ones of course). From there on just add more and more details.

Like an unskinned book. :) Pretty good, now put some textures on it!

I see your finding your way using editable poly's, keep it up,:) before long you'll beable to do wonderful things. Now go and see to what extent you can fully use this skill for, choose a slightly more complex model to do and work your way up :), keep patient and refer to tutorials every now and then, and you should beable to make some kool stuff..

other than that its good to see another person getting to grips with the program :). Yes, map it,, learn UVW mapping. and GI lighting setup (light tracers)

It will bring it to life. ;)

LoL now i have to learn how to do all that! And i have no materials library! I have a few quiestions how do you texture just one part of the object?

how do you texture just one part of the object?

if you want to use a planar map, you use editable poly mode,. and select the face or faces you want, using face select, at the top of the scroll list, on the right underneath the stack. (the red box tool , the 2d one.)

once its selected you get your map from the material editor, and drag it over the now highlighted face/face's that you have selected, then deselect the face/face's and get off editable poly mode, by making sure its not highlighted yellow in the modifier stack list on the right.

that applies your texture to that specific area, then you can fiddle with its scale,co-ordinates (XYZ, etc) and position in the material editor properties list. theres so much more to it to make it easier for you, like naming your selected groups, but thats basically it,,

if you want an easier method I suggest a UVW mapping tutorial :) there are a few in the Tutorial sticky thread above

its much more simple, once you get the hang of it,

ha i just UVW Mapped! Im so proud! Now i just need make a texture?

add it to the material editor as a bitmap. drag it onto your object, making sure its set to 'explicit map channel'.

then add the UV unwrap modifier, and off you go :)

that then you can work on the texture, .. or do it the other way round. up to you

thats nice, so are you using 3dsmax? i think i might try the trial version of that because xsi is just a big pain in the butt to get used to... 3dsmax seems like it is the modelling program of choice anyways..
