This was on the main page of Steam's website. This is because, today, the Supreme Court ruled that the sale of video games cannot be limited due to our First Amendment rights.

The Supreme Court has struck down a California law that would have banned selling "violent" video games to children, a case balancing free speech rights with consumer protection.

Here is the full PDF of the case: http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/10pdf/08-1448.pdf

The current rating system works fine. Leave it up to parents.
and, lolcalifornia
aren't we supposed to be a liberal state?

Edit: ^ The guy's a democrat. :v

Good shit.

The senator who was pushing for this change has responded to the outcome:

Giant Bomb said:
"What has happened today is that the U.S. Supreme Court has decided it's going to side with corporate America and Wal-Mart against our children," said Yee, as part of a press conference held today in San Francisco. "Because of the rejection of the California law, these games will continue to be sold to our children, these games have a harmful effect to our children."

Haha, **** off. What a joke.

That pesky judicial system. Always checkin' and balancin' the legislature 'n shit. I do hate it when they side with freedom of speech against our precious little childrens!

Already skimmed through the decision/brief this morning. I liked Scalia's opinion a lot (which doesn't usually happen :D )

Sorry, but as part of my fake science Sociology A-Level, I covered this and there is literally f*ck all to suggest that video games are "harmful to children."

That's just a bigoted thing to say.

If there's one thing this Court gets Kudos on, it's having a Raging Hard-On For First Amendment Rights.

Hey, I don't understand here. What exactly is the harm in banning the sale of violent games.... for kids?

Personally, kids can go eff themselves and not pollute my multiplayer experience.

Adding to the discussion... In May, the University of Texas conducted a study and found that video games are actually lowering the crime rate.

Well, one - violent video games can act as Catharsis for pent-up emotion and two - if you're inside playing video games you're not out on the street causing trouble for fun. In places like where I live, there is literally nothing to do so a lot of adolescents turn to being anti-social, doing drugs or just generally committing crimes.
