I just got my copy of Pc gamer Uk today early, and its got a paragraph about TF 2 and it reveals some interesting stuff

1) Team Fortress 2 is set during the Seven Hour War
2) Drivable Striders
3) Base Building
4) veihicles
5) Commander Mode

pm me for more "info"

you got it all ready? are u a sub? i thought it was on the shelves in september

yes im a sub, dammit are valve trying to give me aheart attack too much cool stuff coming

I saw this in a friends copy, if its true then it will be fantastic, however, I suspect that it may not be. After all, the info is mostly code notes in the SDK, which is now a good few months old, so plans may well have changed.

Valve also said in the previous PCG (Sept 2005) that things like this (Making educated guesses based on these sort of clues) are "one of the fun things about being a half-life 2 fan", so I wouldn't put it past them to have an expansion in the works for the 7 hour war, and are using this to throw people off.

Mind you, as long as they do something with the 7 hour war, I'll be happy.

omg 7 hour war !
never thought of that !

thanks for the news !

EDIT : why do i feel its wrong to set it in the 7 hour war..?

So it takes place in the HL universe?

Didn't see that one coming.

Hmm... not sure I'm keen on that idea tbh.

I thought it sounded great.

Just imagine playing as US Marine fighting off hordes of Striders while shooting out the back of a Humvee, or playing as a Black Ops soldier and going behind enemy lines to destroy an enemy base.

Or even better, being the commander in a strider and spearing Marines with your feet as you walk about.

Sounds amazing, its a pity they didnt have any pics of TF2 :(

hmmm .. maybe it will be cool
i need to see a trailer first or at least a screenshot

To be honest the origanal TF2 concept is basicly the same as BF2. So i think they are going to have to create somthing pritty uber and origanal to get alot of people intrest in it.

Not US Marines, please God. That'll annoy the hell out of me. I was a bit annoyed that there were two Europeans amongst hordes of Americans in Eastern Europe, let alone any other nationalities. If it was only the US fighting off the Combine then I'll be one pissed off panda. Even though they DID get their arses whipped, 'Nam style.

I was meaning the Marines from Half Life, they didnt annoy me

So whats happening with the original Blue Vs Red mode then, cuz if its during the 7 Hour War, that was Human V Aliens. . . .

This changes everything.

It just won't be TF if we have a human team and an alien team. Thats what I have Natural Selection for.

That would leave room in the story for Shepard :D

You realise that this is only from The Spy, talking about elements in the SDK like code for drivable striders etc, no concrete evidence.

Its not official, its speculation at the moment. But nice info, thx.

This sounds like it's going off of the old alpha material, so I'll remain skeptical.

I'll admit that I'm not too keen on the 7 hour war idea. To me, TF has been a game of objectives. You are divided into red and blue. You are placed in a map. Your objective is to cap the flag, escort the VIP, or whatever. There's no backstory, no reasoning, no relevance to the real world. It is, in the truest sense, a game. A damn fun one, I might add.

To relate this to a more realistic theme, like that of HL2's, would dampen its ability to deliver frantic, over-the-top, kickass gameplay IMO.

I love the idea. DAMNIT, my PCG subscription ended on THIS issue, so I can't read about it :(

I've been to Valve. Trust me, Team Fortress 2 is not set during the 7 Hour War. Yes, I got to see it. If I were you, I'd expect to see it at E3 2006.

Its a bit like how the sequal to Enemy Territory is set in the Quake universe, while the origional was a multiplayer freeware game that was built on Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

I remember seeing some very stylised / cartoony character art for TF2 the last time Valve talked about it proper.

That definately didn't belong to the HL2 universe.

As for the 7-hour war idea, I think it could make a great game - but not necessarily a TF game

TF2 isn't going to be the 7 hours war. What a load of bunk... anyone who fell for that one must have never even played TF1...

First off, anyone whose played Team Fortress previously knows it's 2 EXACT teams (red and blue) versus each other. In each team theres different classes of character. Spy, gunner, medic etc but BOTH TEAMS HAVE THE EXACT SAME CLASSES.

Now how on earth would TF2 be Team Fortress if it was aliens versus humans and one side has striders, gunships, etc while the other side has hummers and tanks.. and both sides have different classes? If it was humans versus Combine, they couldn't have the exact same classes/equipment on either side.... thus it wouldn't even be TF, it would be a whole new game.

IF ANYTHING, it sounds like an interesting new mode of multiplayer for HL2.

But TF2?

Nah.

TF2 != TFC

And Lincoln, spill more beans on TF2 and your trip to valve.

I saw a level in development, I think it was tf_well, I saw an early version of the HWG player model with early animations, and I saw concept art for all the player types.

It has nothing to do with Half-Life 2's story. Everything is very stylized, like out of a comic book.

I may be wrong but I was under the impression that they had been working on TF2 for years in parrallel with Half Life 2, do they really only have early stuff done

That's exactly what I was thinking.

The 7 hour war type MP does sound like it could fun... just not with TF2.

Honestly, Valve missed their window years ago with TF2 (the TF2 we all read about). Valve is an 'innovative' company, and rehashing what Battlefield has done so well, just won't cut it. Also...do you think they have held this game so close and covert for this many years, to release a spinkee new version of TFC, with updated graphics?

I wouldn't be surprised, if Valve changed direction and took advantage of their rich Halflife world, and fiction (where really, anything can happen) to create a teambased game that A. blows people away, B. truly is unique to Valve.

I also wouldn't be surprised, if Valve was working on a new TFC mod or expansion, for the TF crowd. If they have changed 'themes' for TF2, they would obviously be leaving a gap, with the TF crowd that wants and loves the classic TF gameplay and themes.

Personally, I think the idea of driving a Strider through a field of Hoppers, while 2 guys fly past me in a buggy, firing laser guided rockets, sounds pretty friggin cool.

I remember talking with a friend years ago who worked closely with Valve and TF2. Basically BF2 is what TF2 was going to be. So I too wouldn't be surprised if it has taken a major turn around visually and dynamically. In fact, he had told me about Valve working on HL2 and how awesome it looked... wow... flashbacks :)

is it possible for US people to subscribe to UK magazines?

Why? that sounds like reality... US fights while France and most of Europe bows down and surrenders.

Are you biggy's alt? Both join on same date and both make grave mistakes on first post.

The whole US Marines concept has been abandonded.

Also, considering the problems with getting HL2 out the door, the switch between concepts, the switch between engines, and other development stuff, I wasn't suprised TF2 was in early development back in April.

There's no way this could happen. Considering that the combine took out the whole earth in 7(!!!) hours, how could this be ballanced? Also, the actual combine you see in HL2, are based on human's engineered with their technology, so the human based combine only appeared after the war was over. This makes no logical sense, unless you are going to be playing an extremely unballanced game, where one team are the aliens that we don't even know what they look like, and has the ability to pwn everyone within 3 seconds.

Holy focking sweetcakes, batman! 7 hours war and Team Fortress 2 - ejaculation.

If this is true, I love you valve.

Base building is the only thing that sounds semi-interesting.

True. It makes absolutely no sense, but if it's fun i don't care about logic.
