First time back since the delay and I had a question.

I was pretty upset when the delay hit and I know everyone else was to. I have just now decided to venture back onto these forums to see the latest news. I was reading a big debate on one of my regular sites and I am not sure if what I am reading is all fact. My main question:

Was it ever officially confirmed that you will need Steam running and/or an online connection each time you want to even play the singleplayer HL2?

Thanks.

The rumor goes that you'll be able to play single player _without_ a steam connection until you patch it for the first time, at that point it will then require a connection on steam. BUT, Gabe said somewhere that this will probably only be for the first few weeks, after that it should be patched to not require a connection. However if you download the game via Steam then you'll need it to play, and of course multiplayer will require it.

Nobody knows 100% for sure though what the deal will be.

Thank you for the response. Another reason I wanted to start reading these forums again was because of the possible rumor of a release date of September. I know if it becomes official that this is wrong it will be posted here first.

There is one question I have had for the past 3 months also and I hope it is ok to ask. If it is not I will edit my post.....is Team Fortress 2 going to be included in HL2? I know that it was said to be in the code but I guess I never found out if this was true because I don't download stuff illegally.

I think Gabe indeed said that the internet connection requirement was only temporary.

The September delay is nothing but a rumor. Firstly even if it was released in September it isn't actually a delay as there hasn't been an 'official' confirmation of any release date, just some guys guesswork at Vivendi about being in April. Secondly the rumor came from some retail site/store. And they know as much as any of us... For all we know the game could be ready to hit the shelves on the first of February. or the tenth of March, or the third of August. Nobody knows.

There's rumors about TF2 being included with it but to my knowledge Valve haven't confirmed it and have been very secretive over it. Some have seen hints to TF2 in the stolen files. But then anything in there has to be taken with a huge pinch of salt as it all went through the hands of a thief before anyone saw it

My betting is there will be a regular type of Multiplayer option and that TF2 will be the addon that Valve have mentioned. TF2 though is likely to be very different to what TF was. Along with the many classes of player there's likely to be a bunch of different vehicles and tons of new ways to play thanks to the Source engine.

Actually, Gabe was referring to Steam games in General not just Half-Life 2. That quote was just after the release of Steam, when Valve was intending to move the entire user base from WON to Steam after a few weeks. That switch didn't happen (for obvious reasons) so for the moment Steam is online only.

I think it's safe to say that Steam games will be be available offline at the same time Half-Life stops using WON.

About Team Fortress 2, i believe i read somewhere that TFT2 is using the source engine but is being sold as retail sepreatly. I just read it somewhere, i forget where but i remember i did.
I dun know, just look around all the hl2 sites....youll find your answer somewhere....

It has been said TF2 will be sold seperately but in the source leak there was enough TF2 code in there to get a game of it working if you had some media. Some people jumped to the conclusion that because the HL2 and TF2 code were in the same directory it meant TF2 was HL2's mp.

Well steam free counter-strike is on the way, i'm sure of that. Mainly because of the LAN problem, which has no doubt pissed a lot of people pff (eg. we had to delay our yearly clan LAN). Of course you can make a LAN with a net connection, but if its only for steam, why bother... so yes offline play will be coming...

Am I nuts or does everyone have amnesia here? I very clearly remember a valve press release (the last one, probably) after the code theft that said they were targeting a "holiday release". Why can no one recall this? Granted, it wasn't a date, but it was a general release period and they have missed it!
Please, correct me if I'm wrong. (But I don't think I am.)

"targetting" does not mean they confirm any date.. their simply trying to aim for a general period

which they have missed. I'm not trying to get on anyone's back here, I'm just saying, it's been two (2) officially stated release "periods" that they missed. Can you agree to that?

But you see, they had their fingers crossed when they announced the target release date so in the end, nothing matters. Remember that, make sure you cross your fingers when making a promise, that way it doesn't count against you when your promise falls through.

I see where you are getting at Gossoon, but I appreciate a guess, and I would be happy if they coúld just try that again. Afterall, we haven't had any real 'when-will-we-get-the-game' questions answered in a long time.

Anyways... I remember this guy who would sue Valve for missing their release date. Completly absurd...

I completely agree Champ. I'm not saying I don't want another time frame in which valve says it will be released. I do. Something is better than nothing. Usually. I just want people to acknowledge that it is not just 9/30 that they have missed. That's all. Anyway...

Well I acknowledge the fact that they missed more than one "guess" :)

I'd also like to point out that Valve has a pretty poor PR staff... Their site could really use a news page which could tell us at least WHAT kind of status they had. As far as I see it, that Lombardi fella' is only costing them money...

Just to try to re-answer your first question, I believe you can even load up steam currently without the use of an internet connection. When i reboot my computer i usually unplug my DSL and when it loads up it always loads up steam even though i have no established internet connection, someone should also try this and see if they are able to actually load a game without an internet connection.

You can't please everyone all of the time

They said September 30th. They missed the date, they had a lot of shit going down, way more important stuff going on behind the scenes than most of you seem aware, but of course cue outcry of incompetence on their part and other excuses

Valve or someone said "We're TRYING for a festive period release" TRYING, TRYING, TRYING. Said it three times so it might sink in. They never said it would be definate, people just came to that conclusion themselves. When Christmas came and went, cue outcry that they missed another deadline

Some guy at Vivendi said April, he wasn't supposed to and had pretty much plucked a date out of the air. Cue outcry cause its so far away

They then say no release date. Cue outcry of its not fair, they wont tell us yada yada yada

People ask for a guess, if they give a guess and they can't keep to it (being only a guess) guess what, thats right, cue outcry that they missed a date given

They can't win with some people. If they give you a guess like you want, you'll complain when they can't meat it. If they give a solid date and rush it out for then you'll complain its unfinished or buggy, if they say nothing like people want "cause id do it" then they get bitched at because they wont give a date.

They were bitched at for keeping quiet for so long

They were bitched at for saying anything when they did

They don't owe people anything, most will go and pirate it anyway, many have gone and played the stolen files knowing full well their not supposed to, and then even had the cheek to complain that the incomplete stolen files was buggy! FFS!!

Many people go on about "oh if its not out soon I'm gonna download the stolen files and play that cause Valve suck" oh well great, you do that, you go hurt the very people your begging to release a game from. Yeah, real grown up mature attitude that is

Think about it.. This is the sort of crap they seem from the gamers day in day out. Makes you wonder why they even bother doesn't it ;(

Oh and this isn't directed at any individual, just the general stupidity of some people.. Makes no difference what post it happens to be following. But of course, anyone who doesn't like what I wrote must see themselves in it. :p

Well said Fenric, I will accept any delays Valve gives us and and continue to be loyal. Valve im sure is working very hard on a special gift for us, and I say let them have all the time they need.

giving them all then time they need is a good idea , but don't u have the urge to play it now :p

wait I know, $$MONEY$$!!! and lots of it.

I agree with Terminator, it's not a complete mystery why they make games. And from Gabe's own mouth the best way to run a developing company is to release, release, release; special gift... please. If you give me $50, I'll send you a special gift too.

Yeah $$$$$$$

No-one would willingly get involved with such a pack of assholes like computer gamers  . Constantly being slandered anonymously isn't my idea of a good job! It's a love-hate relationship.

We hate and abuse these companies for not telling us what's going on. We hate and abuse them for delays, for buggy games released too early, for bad games! Though we also love them for the great games they release and sometimes construct effigies of the developers who make really good games /brushes dust of "THE GABE" statue.

Inversely, they hate us for all the criticism we throw their way, yet they wouldn't have jobs if it wasn't for us!

Crazy stuff.

Heh, those people really take the biscuit :hmph:

'Waa, these stolen files suck!!, SUCK!!!SUCK!!!!:frown: Valve and Gabe are liars!! This game was never complete!!Stone them!!!Drown them in lakes of blood!!! '

Good post Fen

(gets back to pondering his article)

heheh, they do it for the money.

I don't think thats quite it really.
They must be feckin loaded right now anyway. I mean they made halflife which allmost every gamer all over the globe has because it plays everyones favourite mods. CS, DOD, TFC, SvenCoOp, specialists, blah, blah, blah.........

That has to have earnt them enough to retire happy!

But instead they decided to make HL2.

That deserves our respect in my opinion.

They aren't making HL2 for the sake of us... Make no mistake about it. They're doing it for the money and for the fun of making it. And that's basically also what the rest of the world is doing. People are working to get money, but at the same time, they are enjoying what they do for a living. (Most are.)

LOL most of the people at valve are doing there hobby for a job, I doubt any of them would want to retire.
