FIXED! My stuttering and texture problems

I resorted to turning my sound details down to medium to minimize the stuttering. I was also having the rainbow texture problems, I was using mat_reloadtextures but that fix is only temporary.

Well tonight on a hunch I turned my AGP speed down to 4x in the ATI Smartgard property panel and everything is working 100%! I have even turned the sound back up to High detail, no stuttering!

Best of all the fps hit was minimal.

I am running 1280 x 1024 with no AA and 8xAF and everything is smooth.

My system
AMD Athlon XP 2400
ATI 9800pro
1 GB RAM

Try it you might like it!

I also heard that turning off the Catalyst AI fixes the rainbow textures as well. I myself have the rainbow textures (I refuse to rollback to 4.9 again, by golly, Source isn't gonna keep me in the Stone Age), but I haven't tried turning off the AI yet.

I might have to try this one, just for kicks.

Errr my 9600xt is at 4x and it cant go any higher. Is that because its only a 9600 and not a 9800?
I never knew about that agp speed thing...hmmh.
And i dont suppose turning mine down to 2x would help my stuttering prob would it? At least not without a big drop in fps... :frown:

I'm pretty sure all ATI products run on 1x, 2x, 4, and 8x settings.

Thanks! This really helped my sound stuttering problem!

Perhaps the AGP max speed is set to x4 in your BIOS, or your mobo only supports up to x4

Mmmkay forget it me no cares...

And whats with Overdrive? Is it okay to have that on? Its usually no hotter than 34 C with it on so i dont think it would be bad..
But what does Overdrive actually do? Clock it?

OverDrive automatically overclocks your video card (while throttling back if it gets too hot). It's safe.

As for your AGP 4x issue...

Download CPUID, run it, go to the mainboard tab, and tell me what is at the bottom part of it.

what's the point of a screenshot ? it's just randomly colloured textures . . .

because i asked for one you to DICK, im trying to find a solution that will work for all people and i need to make sure the problem im getting is the exact same one being discussed in this topic. Now die so you can prevent yourself from making anymore stupid posts with dumb questions that are irrelevant.

Ouch someonle a little bit heated...

I just wanted to update that for the second night in a row I have played without any texture corruption, before turning my AGP from 8x to 4x I would without fail get multiple texture corruptions throughout the game. Audio stuttering has virtually disappeared with just small stutters occuring when loading a new area but I feel that is probably normal.

I don't know why it works but it does.

Now I just need to figure out how to get by those 2 blasted gunships!

That's great news. My question is did you have stuttering on the intro movie before, and if so, does it run fine now?

I haven't tried the intro yet, I had massive stuttering and texture corruption when I first ran the intro, it was improved some by turning down the audio to medium and disabling AA.

I try it tonight and post the results.

My #1 concern is with the ending sequence, just when
that big explosion occurs
. Is that still there?

Yes, I am sure that no matter what you do to fix texture issues, the part at the end where
that big explosion occurs
is still there. That IS the ending, it is not going to change just because you fiddle with something to fix a texture issue.

Well I just tried the intro and... no stuttering! None nada zip.
I'm just at Nova Prospect in the game so I can't tell you what happens at the ending.

I highly recommend if you are having stuttering and texture problems to try your video card at 4x AGP instead of 8x.
