"flickering textures" in game...

Ok, playing through HL2 for the first time! :) Yeah, that’s right I never got around to it till now.

Any way I have:

AMD 64 4000+
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium nForce4 SLI Motherboard
CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB)
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS
BFGtech Geforce 7800GTX OC PCI 256

Currently using the 81.84 drivers with these settings:

High Quality (all optimizations off)
Trilinear Filtering on
Triple Buffering on
Gamma AA on
TA: MSAA
Clamp on

All in game settings at max with Vsync on at 1280x960 res.

Everything is set up good.

Textures are flickering between white and normal further in the distance. As I move forward or backwards the textures will jump between white and normal on certain textures only.

Here's a quick video of it:

As you can see the textures in the distance seem to "flicker"

I've tried 78.05 and 81.84 drivers, everything on HQ all around.

I think this might be the same for all, but I just wanted to make sure...

Thanks!

After watching your video, I see no problem at all with what you are describing. Looks normal to me.

Maybe disable Vsync and/or raise the AA to the highest setting as well as with everything else.

So, the "flickering" on the floor near the end of the room and the back wall and fence are normal?

In every place I go in the game, when the distance reaches a certain point I get the flickering problem. But, it only kicks in after a certain "distance" away.

I've tried everything I can think of to even just change the effect. One way, is to turn off AA, this changes the flickering pattern but of course it's still there, just in a different way.

Upping the resolution to 1600x1200 helped a little, and fps still seem ok. Lowest so far is around 40fps with everything maxed at 1600x1200.

Got it figured out! :)

Ok, it's totally AA related!

With 1600x1200 AND 8xs it's like 95% gone. I wouldn't have ever cared.

Unfortunately I have my fps dip down to around 30 at times.

At 1280x960 and 8xs they stay at at better rate and the issue is still a lot better.

Thanks...

Hmmm, I wouldn't think it would dip down to 30 even with the most intense action going on...

With that rig, I would have thought you would be able to play it at 1600x1200 with everything full, and get almost no noticable fps drops......I guess not?

If it were me, I'd play at 1600x1200 and maybe tone AF down to 8x or 4x (16x is max right?)

meh, flickeringzabitch.

Well, I do use Vsync, hate tearing, so it goes down to 30fps in the area where you first go on to the city street in the beginning. At 1280x960 it only dips to around 50, which is totally fine.

Changing from 16 to 8 aniso doesn't really make an FPS difference. 8xs AA is pretty hardcore, even for my system. If it were SLI then it wouldn't matter ... :)

But I'm not getting SLI until they fix it so Vsync works with AFR SLI.

Really, I'm pretty stoked I can run everything maxed out with 8sx AA @ 1280x960. :)
