I'd just like to get a feel for the general attitude to foreign foods. I consider myself lucky as my parents introduced me to a broad variety of foods at a young age. By the time I was able to eat a spicy Thai curry, I had friends who couldn't eat a mild salsa without choking and flailing for a glass of water.

However, since coming to China 18 months ago, I've seen and eaten so many amazing dishes. Some I'd heard of, some left me gaping in surprise. But my attitude has always been What the hell, I'll try anything once.

What do you all feel about strange foods or new tastes? Are you game, or do you play it safe?

Be glad that you haven't been introduced the finnish kalakukko. I'm glad I haven't been ;)

You have piqued my curiosity, sir! What is this dish of which you speak?

Could it be worse than any of the following (eaten by me in China)

Deep fried tarantula
Cicadas
Fried scorpions
Camel skin
Pig face
millipedes
dog in a pot
Cats ears
starfish
jellyfish

and so on...

I've eaten plenty of foods from the philippines and guam.. so I suppose I've had my fair share of foreign foods. Hopefully I'll get to try kalakukko soon.

Well, it's these very small fish, with thousands of small small small bones in them, that sting very badly, that are fried and in some kind of mixture of bread crumbs and something else, all this is inside of a bread made of whete and ruis.

That doesn't sound so bad. I love seafood.

There is a fish dish here that sounds slightly similar. Very small fish, stuffed with caviar, fried whole and eaten whole. Bones and all.

There's something simmilar here that's caleld muikut, which basically is fish that are dipped in egg, then in flour, then in bread crumbs. Then they are fried in butter and eaten whole, they on the other hand are very tiny, about an inch long, but very tasty.

The worse food I have ever had is that crap from feed my starving children or whatever it is. Omfg, I feel sorry for the people who have to eat that crap.

Camal skin made cringe lol.

I've tried some battered spiders in Spain and alligator in Florida. Compared to your list, though, my eating habbits seem very conservative :) (not always through choice - most restaurants in the UK don't serve traditional asian food)

Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian cuisine are generally my favourite, however, sometimes you can't beat a good old fashioned roast dinner or fry up.

//i'll try most things once - but not dog, just wouldn't be able to look my mutt in the eyes again.

Generally i dont like Spicy food like curry, but Chinese food is a favorite, i was recentley introduced to Indian food, all my misconceptions on how that would be were wrong, it was gorgeous. I have the same attitude really, i'll try anything once...within reason.

I Have to say, Pig Face, cat ears and dog in a pot sound rather interesting.

and here I thought you were a vegan ;)

I love food from all over the world...I've tried a wide variety of ethnic dishes (none as exotic as some of the strange things you guys seem to put in your mouths) but I'm partial to trying new things...but I draw the line at things that are best eaten live

I'm a very open minded person with it comes to food... and i'll eat alot of stuff, but there are some things I don't like/won't try to taste. One of those things I will not eat is raw fish. I prefer my food overcooked to undercooked.

EDIT: And I can't really eat alot of spicey foods. I can... but many types make me sick to my stomach, physically not mentally.

i've had cow brains, and it tastes like eggs if you cook it, i am not kidding

^ ergh. That reminds me of Temple of Doom 'chilled monkey brains' :)

What about steaks Raziarr? I like mine to still be pumping blood on the plate mmmmmmmmm :D

I eat british and american stuff, although I do like chinese stuff now and then, I hate indian and mexican stuff.

I guess I just don't like to try different things, I stick to what I like.

That said though, if the ingredients are nice, i'll try it... and I always invent my own meals since i'm a student... usually just throw anything that sounds nice into a pan and stirring it.

Latest invention is baked beans with tuna and melted cheese, with ketchup.

Don't knock it till you've tried it :p

What is british food? Beer and sausage? lol...I really want to know.

lol

Things like shepherd's/cottage pie and fish and chips are English food. Fry ups are certainly English too.

I'd like to think we take credit for roast dinners too.

cow tongue :r
I once ate that and its disgusting...

Yeah, they have a type of restaurant in China that specialises in meat. They have a huge roaring fire with heaps of different spits turning.

When it is ready, the waiter walks around to all the tables armed with his spit and a large knife.

You specify how much or how little you want. I have to admit to surprise when I saw a whole cow tongue being carried on a spit. Tasted alright, just like beef but a little tougher.

Oh, and CptStern - me, a vegan? How dare you sir! :p
