Well I know that a few of you guys on the site use MAX and I thought you might be interested in this shader I've been working on to help create realistic fire and flames quickly and easily. This is my second attempt (old mat is here: http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/231555/Action/FullPreview - Also Free)

Well this is my second attempt at convincing smoke and flames. This time I have used a very different technique, which has allowed me to have more flexiblilty and control over the material.

Improvements include x2 faster rendering, much much nicer pyro FX and also realtime previewing.

Simply load up the materials into your material library in wither MAX 5 or 6 (possibly 4 but never tried it) and apply it to your particle system.
This material can ONLY be used on Facing particle systems!

once applied you should see results instantly!
(you may have to point to the relevant texture file depending on where you extract the Zip)

Included in the Zip are three different tyes of material to get you started , which include normal, billowing smoke, Flames, and Flames with smoke.

Also I have included a sample MAX(6) file which show how it can be used effectively in your particle systems.

Anyway i'll write a tutorial and a more detailed instructions manual later.

One last tip is this: beware of using raytraced shadows with this mateial! It will drastically increase your rendertime.

Thanks, and i hope you all find this at least a little it useful. If anyone has any problems dont hesitate to ask me about it!

Wow man, that looks fantastic. I don't personally use 3dsmax but I'm sure a lot of people here would love to use this. Mind if I move it to the modeling section? This post could really be in either section since it is art, but also 3d. I think you'd have a better response in there though. Can't wait to see the finished scene, it's looking good.

One more thing, what all is involved in making a plugin like this anyhow? I've always wondered.

Damn Thats Nice. Click And Save!!

Think it would be to crazy to put in game.

Thankee vewwy muchas gracias <--- french.

yeah its ok to move it, actually i forgot about the modeling section, to be honest this isnt really a plugin, just a shader system for max. Took a lot of experimentation, research and hard work, and although it still needs work (version 2 is still being worked on) Im pretty happy with it so far.

Anyway, if anyone have a play, post your renders! i'd love to see how it is used by u guys :)

I *LOVE* you!!!
... I mean.. it... But still, it's awesome!

Not cuz I'll be using it any time soon but I'm glad to see something like this pulled off. Also last screen rules.
