Well I know that a few of you guys on the site use MAX and I thought you might be interested in this shader I've been working on to help create realistic fire and flames quickly and easily. This is my second attempt (old mat is here: http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/231555/Action/FullPreview - Also Free)
Well this is my second attempt at convincing smoke and flames. This time I have used a very different technique, which has allowed me to have more flexiblilty and control over the material.
Improvements include x2 faster rendering, much much nicer pyro FX and also realtime previewing.
Simply load up the materials into your material library in wither MAX 5 or 6 (possibly 4 but never tried it) and apply it to your particle system.
This material can ONLY be used on Facing particle systems!
once applied you should see results instantly!
(you may have to point to the relevant texture file depending on where you extract the Zip)
Included in the Zip are three different tyes of material to get you started , which include normal, billowing smoke, Flames, and Flames with smoke.
Also I have included a sample MAX(6) file which show how it can be used effectively in your particle systems.
Anyway i'll write a tutorial and a more detailed instructions manual later.
One last tip is this: beware of using raytraced shadows with this mateial! It will drastically increase your rendertime.
Download it here:

RobsSmokeV1.5rc1.zip
Sample Imagery:
Quick tornado (30 seconds render)
GI Test (self illumination)
WIP War of the Worlds:
Thanks, and i hope you all find this at least a little it useful. If anyone has any problems dont hesitate to ask me about it!
