Anyone interested in starting a game of the month? I propose we vote on a game of the month in which well post untampered screen shots of high scores or time trials in which the winner will chose the next game for the following month. I've seen this done on other forums and is actually pretty fun. You can use either use you real nes system or another means of playing, but the only thing asked is that you don't cheat.

Anyone interested? Sounds nerdy, but could be fun if theres enough people interested.

If you include the Sega Master System or Mega Drive then count me in. Also, isn't emulation legal? I thought as long as you own the game then having the ROM doesn't matter?

Having the ROM just generally doesn't matter whether you own it or not, because no one is coming after you. But for the purposes of this forum, I imagine the mods won't want to get tangled in the grey area as to who has rights to play whatever.

That's a fallacy. Emulation is never legal.

Your wrong. For years Sony and Nintendo have been trying to stop Emulation and they have always failed. Sony brought the creators of bleem! and Virtual Game Station (VGS) to court and both times the court went in favour of the emulator.

Emulators are only illegal if they break these rules:
* The emulator is bundled with ROM images
* The emulator is bundled with the BIOS.
* The emulator is developed with illegally-obtained information, such as a stolen SDK
* The emulator violates applicable patents that protect the system

ok i edited my original post. there will be no talking what-so-ever about piracy from here forth..

since theres some discrepancies on which system well be using for the game of the month well vote on it. After it has been decided, we can nominate and vote for games in which we will play for the high score.

Remember that many systems will come under 'SEGA'.

Speaking as someone who has access to any of the above (and more), I was getting more at the idea that it shouldn't be limited to any one console, perhaps a time-frame is more important?

Battletoads no-warp time trial. Right here ... right now.

I've stood by this opinion all my life ever since it's release. SNES is by far the best console of all time. It has more titles that I enjoy than any other console in existance to this day.

Also, count me in. :p

Yea but it can't be that broad. I mean we can't have 1 person wanting colecovision, one wanting atari 2600, one wanting...ect

It'd be easier to limit it to some of the main consoles (preferably the pre 2000's ones)

Well I think one month we'd have NES GOTM and then another would be SNES, another for MegaDrive ... just whatever we end up agreeing on. This could work if it were properly organized.

Yeah, this sounds like a good compromise and it also keeps it fresh and interesting.
Although HL2.net and organising don't go well together.

Your wrong.
You're. Contraction of you are.

And I didn't say emulators, I said emulation. It is illegal to possess the ROMs. If you look at the post I was responding to WHICH WAS YOUR OWN POST I was specifically addressing the fallacy of, "If I own a physical copy of the game, can't I own the ROM legally?"

ROMs are not covered under the archival exception.

Also I feel like I should be throwing a derp in this post somewhere.

Sorry, my bad i misunderstood you. ROM's are legal is some country's. If you own the game and you are using the ROM as as a backup then it's legal. In the US it's illegal no matter what.

Poll is closed. First month's system will be snes, and the first months game (or however long it takes us to complete it) will commence.

we now need suggestions for games to be played. After we get some suggestions we can go ahead and poll for the winner.

My first suggestion will be super ghouls and ghosts.

The format will be highest point total taken with a screen shot. Now you don't need to complete the game (some are impossibly hard), you will play as far as you can get. Suggestions? please post

Hmmm, never played the game, not for lack of want, but could be fun. I'll put forth a shooter like R-Type 3 or Darius Twin, but something tells me there won't be many takers ...

This could be fun.
Your Link loos pretty damn excited

It'll be an interesting exercise of the honor system to keep people from using save-states :)

I recently discovered and fell in love with the R-Type games. I can't ever get further than the 2nd or 3rd level before having to use continues though :P

Super R-Type is a harsh choice isn't it? That's the version of R-Type II where they lost the savestates?

Yeah, Super R-Type has R-Type II (arcade) levels. It still has periodic checkpoints that you start from if you die, but you lose all your powerups if that's what you mean. R-Type games are a pretty burly series in general, but honestly the only R-Type game I've ever been able to not die for entire levels on is R-Type Final.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

*breath*

HAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Ah....AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Any of YOU? You people, on THIS forum? Beat Super Ghouls and Ghosts?! YOU PEOPLE?! HOLY SHIT ARE YOU GODDAMNED SHITTING ME?!

Good luck being here until the year 2057. I have no faith that any of you, not a single one, could ever clear Super Ghouls and Ghosts. In fact, I have no faith that any of you could make it beyond the third level! And hell I'm being generous; the very IDEA that any of you could make it to the third level to begin with is laughable.

Super Ghouls and Ghosts...oh jesus Mutoid Man's never even played the goddamned game. "It could be fun?" Super Ghouls and Ghosts is not 'fun.' Super Ghouls and Ghosts is the game that makes a mockery of even the most hardcore of hardcore gamers. It is the Devil, Satan, Lucifer Morningstar in cartridge form. It is beyond even Turbo Tunnel in terms of difficulty. Abandon all hope ye who play Super Ghouls and Ghosts, for unless you have the mettle to sit through the most grueling challenges of your life you will never even pass the first stage. You will never even reach the checkpoint in the first stage.

This thread just went downhill fast. All of your excitement at racing each other to complete a challenge in an oldschool game will amount to nothing but rage--bloodshot-eyed, frothing-at-the-mouth rage--as each of you will summarily give up in trying to beat Super Ghouls and Ghosts before a forum full of people who will also never beat Super Ghouls and Ghosts. And this thread will receive no posts as you each pour your time into beating the game, and it will eventually disappear.

And time will pass, and you will be old men, having never even seen the Red Arremer, and these forums will be long gone and you will wonder where the time went.

And you shall not have even passed the third stage.

I was thinking of suggesting that. Try one of these:

Doom Troopers
Gradius III

I think many of you could provide some competition with each other in those games. I was going to say Contra 3, but Doom Troopers is less difficult.

That's a fallacy. Emulation is never legal.
Not unless it's abandonware, which is why it's now so hard if not impossible to find Nintendo classics via ROM emulator.

Because of the Wii Virtual Console, they dusted off these old games for re-sell.

Have any of you visited a popular ROM site lately? Almost all of the big name titles have been scratched from their servers. All that's left are all the non-money making titles nobody cares about anymore which mostly are the games from those eras that are nothing but so much chaff. (a.k.a. the crappy games) That's why it's called abandonware. Because the original companies of these games are either defunct or don't care about these franchises/games anymore.

ROMs are only illegal if the rights to a game are renewed by the original or a new publisher. Almost all emulation sites have scratched games that are included in the Virtual Console library. Don't believe me? Try downloading Super Metroid of any of the old Mario Bros. games. The website will likely tell you that "this ROM has been scratched due to being intelligent property".

BTW Darkside, I've beaten Super Ghosts and Ghouls. WITHOUT CHEATING TOO. Wasn't that hard imo. Was a little disappointed though the game wouldn't let me fight the final boss without some kind of bracelet.

If you want to know something really amazing, I actually completed all paths in Contra Hard Corps.....WITHOUT CHEATING!!!!

*pssh...top that.*

Donkey Kong Country.
Does DKC even record a score?

I thought that was the point anyway. Whoever got the highest score and posts a screenshot. Not whoever survives the game and comes back to say 'I did it, next please'.

After Darkside's rant I think I might change my vote to SGAG. The Turbo Tunnel (Battletoads) reference filled me with interest. I eat the Turbo Tunnel for breakfast (yes, granted I think I have logged months into that game since my childhood). Tomorrow night I shall do some research.

Then you have earned a great deal of respect in my eyes.

Assuming that Darkside, who fought for the Genesis army in the Last Great Console War, has not completely beaten Contra Hard Corps
Boy, don't get ahead of yourself. I said you earned my respect, not that you have reached my level.

No, no. There are definitely no mid-level checkpoints in the game (you always lose your powerups in Shumups, don't you?). Not only that, but it's a hideously slow moving version of R-Type, and you don't get a Force until the end of the first level! Almost like I was playing Gradius *yawn*.

R-Type III for president.

Ha that's right :) Yeah Super R-Type was pretty stingy about powerups, especially those "Bit"s ... getting one above you AND one below you usually means you used the cheat code :)

I've beaten Super R-Type without cheating before too. Only played R-Type 3 some, and tbh it seemed much harder as it moved at a much quicker pace.

Boy, don't get ahead of yourself. I said you earned my respect, not that you have reached my level.
Ah pshaaw! :P

Although I'll admit most of you young whipper snappers wouldn't know challenge if it bit you on the nose, why back in my day I would play...hrm...snort...........Zzzzz....Zzzzzz....Zzzzz

Doom Troopers
Gradius III

Haven't tried these games, so I'll give them a shot. And Ennui, I don't think theres point totals for donkey kong country. Contra III is a good suggestion as well.

I'll let a few more people make some suggestions and sometime tomorrow night I'll make a poll so we can all vote on our selection.

You know what I just realized? You're only a couple months younger than I am. I don't know why I was thinking you were only 18 or something. You were born in '84, which means you must've fought in the Console Wars! Maybe we are at a similar level.

Boy today is like "Give Saturos some credit" day.

Balls, you guys are right, I just checked and none of the DKC games have points :( never paid much attention to that sort of thing when I was a kid. Contra III would be fun, although I would lose so hard.
