Here's an email I sent to Valve: (I know it's a stupid question, but I'm only 14 ok!)

(the important parts are in bold)

Subject: question/idea about release strategy
Hey Gabe (erm.. I can call you Gabe right?)
I heard you sent a release candidate to Vivendi!
congrats!
I don't know, but I'm guessing that Vivendi wants to
release Half-Life 2 around Christmas time, right? That
is the time games can make the most money, so I am
told. However, a bunch of people want the game as
soon as possible (I'm sure you know that by know lol).
So I was wondering, are you going to do something
like release the finished HL2 product in it's current
state now, and release the special DVD version later
for Christmas?
(assuming the RC will be approved, and
I'm sure it will) I think that would be a good way to
"get the best of both worlds" so to speak- You get to
release the game early, and Vivendi get's its
Christmas sales. Plus, you probably would even get to
sell the game twice to some people; i.e. they buy the
normal edition when it comes out, then buy the special
edition later with all its tasty extras.
Now, of course I'm not trying to tell a very large and
respectable company how to conduct it's sales, and I'm
not asking this as a favor, I'm just wondering if
that's the kind of marketing strategy you're planning
on using.
Thanks for your time,
Ben B.

Gabe's response:
I can't think of any good reason not to get it into stores as quickly as possible.

Well, he didn't really answer my question (like I said it was a stupid one anyway). But I guess we should expect Half-Life 2 to be in stores "as quickly as possible".

 I heard that Gabe Newell and the other Valve dudes use automated e-mail reponses.

Ok, but I don't think people are expecting the game around Christmas. Looks like late october, early november.

Well, some people are. not everyone, just some people.

Some people think that Vivendi will release the game around November in order to generate sales. I don't believe they'll do this but it could come out in November for other reasons. (Like, they've already planned stuff to work around a November release).

EDIT: Also, welcome to the forums.

It wouldnt be valve holding it up for a xmas release. it would be vivendi.

We already know they wouldn't delay it anyways, they have no call in when its shipping, VALVe doesn't do the manufacturing VUG does.

right on

Yet again, VUG would lose money, which is adding to their debt, so think of it this way, they could make there 50 mill now, or wait a few months and be more in debt and continue falling. Cause they will still get sales for christmas even if its released in october.

lol, because of what your nickname means in spanish :E

O that! lol! I know what it means, but my name isn't teta_bonita because I have them, (eww) but because I like looking at them! :E
I guess that makes me the pervert LOL!

Well as time has went on. It seems the holiday season starts earlier every year. Especially when the market peaks in september while just preping for december. It's been holding steady for half a decade. But with the slump in the economy, it could reap some hell on unit sales to push early as they have in the past. So setting an october/november/december release would be ideal to cap sales right in the thick of it. But really, the product WILL sell itself. Or so I should say already has. With little or no mass adverts panning. I think valve and vivendi can sleep easy at night no matter when they release it.

Nice e-mail! I guess this proves all the delay trolls wrong?

Delay trolls? Oh, you mean those of us who learn from history? Righto then.

Jesus time flys! I'm sitting at my computer around may drolling over e3 then BLAM: four months later.

:| I am not good with Spanish, but I just figured out what Teta Bonita means, hehe. Beautiful Tits

I think that most don't understand that hl2 isn't a seasonal title. Whenever it comes out its going to be the best seller for weeks if not months.

If your refering to history elephant, than it will be the best seller for approx 2 years =p

hl2 will do fine if it is released earlier. i know we all want them to release it soon. if they wait too long, they will lose money as the tech will be begin to look more and more dated and the novelty of the game will wear off. so they should just releease it as soon as possible, i know valve realizes this but i just hope VU does also.

Too bad it won't, seeing as how its always updated...
