FORCED COMMERCIALS

Yes, according to Royal Philips Electronics. A patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office says researchers of the Netherland-based consumer electronics company have created a technology that could let broadcasters freeze a channel during a commercial, so viewers wouldn't be able to avoid it.

WTF!? That doesn't sound at all good

On Wednesday, company officials issued a statement that noted the technology also enables the opposite: allowing viewers to watch television without advertising. The intention was never to force viewers to watch adds against their will, the company said of the technology.

Hmm... That kind of calms me down a bit.
What do you think about this?

lol, forced commercials, if that ever gets put in it won't last very long...

Ugh, reminds me of that add at the beginning of rented videos, back in the old days :), that went so slow that even if you fast forwarded it you still had to read it.

HAVE..........................YOU...........................GOT........................WHAT..................YOU...........................PAID.........................FOR?

 :flame: :x

How about dream induced commercials, aka futurama?

Someone want to explain to me what it means by "the opposite"?

Unfreezing a channel during a commercial? Isn't that... normal?

QFT. Seriously, it's all trash. Occasionally, I'll turn on Comedy Central for the stand-up, but 99% of the time, PC is better.

I watched battlestar on tv which i now watch via channel BT. I agree the rest of TV is fairly poo.

I watch the news and sport. Forced adds would be shit.

Go Go PBS! Its paid for by viewers like us, you know!

Well they said in the interview that "the opposite" would be no commercials at all, but there's a catch, you would have to pay an additional fee to the cable company.

That's really stupid. on our terrestrial TV (non-cable etc), we don't get adverts on two channels (BBC1 and BBC2), because it's government sponsored.
But we do pay for a TV liscence, which goes to the government.

Dammed Philips is really going down the drain.
Yea. Phillips has always sucked hard. The only thing they have ever done for the good of electronics - that I am aware of, is co-create the Compact Disc. That was a LOONG time ago. Since then what? Merged with Magnavox?

Philips/Magnavox? PTCH. Crap.

EDIT _ sorry - thats a different Philips. Nevermind. Never heard of Netherlands Philips

I don't really watch TV that much anymore. I am either on the internet, playing a video game, or out running around. But I would have to disagree that it is all trash on TV. Here are some of the shows that I love to watch:
Viva la Bam, South Park, Chappell Show, Mythbusters, MTV Cribs, Seinfeld, The Simpsons... well there are a lot more but I am kinda busy right now and can not take to much time sitting here and typing all of this.

if i watch tv it'll be hallmark or something, lol
rofl, Only thing good on hallmark (And I don't even know if they still show it) is Gilligan's Island..... For some reason I still like that show. :)

Well the only show I like on Hallmark is Midsummer Murders. Oh yeah and Sidious, I like Myth Busters too:thumbs: .

Back on topic, I think it's highly unlikely this idea will go beyond the testing faze. If they dare to implement this "user friendly" tech I think they are gonna have riots on their hands

Ok, now this is getting on my nerves.

Ad. Short for advertisement. There's only ONE d in advertisement. Why would they add another d on there? There's no point. It isn't a math problem. We're not adding numbers. It's not a mental illness. It's an ad. Just one d. Please.

Add.

I fail to see how such a device could possibly circumvent the switch of doom:

Stupid inventors.

I really only watch TV for baseball these days, other than that I DL new episodes of Top Gear and watch the same episodes of The Office, I'm Alan Partridge, and Spaced over and over and over again

I don't see what the whole fuss is about. Do they staple your eye lids to your forehead so you can't close them?

think about the current trends in video distribution on the net, and say that again.

how many times has some schmuck posted a link to a vid where you have to sit through an ad to watch it, or things like rapidshare where you have to basically wait, even tho there's no waiting line, and sit and look at ads until your download is "ready"?

any time someone posts one of these links, i close it without watching the video or the ad, and then i add whoever posted its name to a list of people i'm going to beat the shit out of if i ever meet them.

and with tv/broadband/phone services all being merged into one, it's only going to get worse.

Oh noes. I don't know which to worry about more; rising gas prices, nuclear holocaust, or FORCED ADS!!

oh the humanity

How about, uhmm, changing the channel? Or justturning off the tv? God damn me = s3x

That's just it, with this thingy implemented, you CAN'T just change the channel, but you could turn of the TV or just throw a brick at it:cheese: .

Forced TV viewing for those with ADD? Man, that's harsh.
