i posted this on my mod list thread but didnt pay attention to it it sounds very ambitious click on the link above for the site heres the intro on the site:

Foreordination is a massively multiplayer modern rpg. Your goal in it is to survive, you'll be able to use everyday objects as weapons as well as real guns. You'll be able to join one of 2 factions, which are in conflict with one another or just say neutral.

Everything you do and don’t do will affect you in one-way or another. Whether it’s the weather, your hungry, or your reputation you’ll be affected. The world which you will come to know in this game, is made a rules and boundaries. You will learn them, one way or another.

ehh, not too much info up yet... my mod idea first started out thinking it could go the 'mmo' route, and had a better layout than this mod (of course, my mod isn't going the mmo route anymore). They're planning on running 8-12 servers for a free mod? uhhh...

If they were smart, they would go with 1 server, to store persistant characters. Then fan servers could run any map they want, have the server files accessed straight from the mod's official server, and then they could have tons of fan made maps comming out all the time, expanding the game to no end.

oh well, guess they'll have to settle with 12 servers! bad idea.

yea i agree but valve has already said that the payment interface that they are using to sell hl2 over steam is available to modders as well so this probably wont be free

Mac looks like crap but the mod idea sounds awesome.

Funny enough, his mod sounds alot like my idea 5 years ago.

Took me 5 years to formulate my idea into something realistic. And to learn what makes a good game.

I know Frown, i wish you guys luck, but I can tell you right now, what you want to do isnt going to be easy, and if you want to accomplish it it will take close to 20-30 people to do so. There is alot of content coding whatever that needs to be done.

Also the ability to run the actual server for the mmo part. If you got the money cool, but i doubt it. Good luck none the less, just remember one thing, be realistic in some view, peopel think my mod is ambitious, I know it can be done, but I know yours can be done, its a matter if your willing to put in the time and find the people to do it.

Yep :)

Problem with mmo on hl2 with its 32 player limit (ok, that isnt set in stone but its probable) is finding somewhere to host a central database to store everyones character etc. Map size is another critical limiting factor. Would like to see it done, but its a lot of work.

The problem with an "mmo" half-life 2 mod is this...

32 people per server. Ok lets just say they have the money to run 10 servers...

320 people can play at any given time. 320 != successful mod. Maybe they'll get more than that, maybe 640... at any given time, 320 of them cannot play. IF the game is done nicely, and it's really fun, the fanbase will be WAY over 320 people, which means there will be a lot of mad kids not able to play when they want.

So to really pull this off (and yes, it can be done)... use those servers ONLY to store character players. Release the mod with say... 10-20 maps. Over time, add new skills, add new maps, and let the fanbase support the mod. Communities of servers will pop up, each running different maps. It would be crazy fun playing a free mmo type game (note: most mods that charge through steam will not be successful, at least, I won't be paying for mods, nor will I be charging for mine... and I don't know anyone who will =/ ).

So anyways, I didn't mean to sound so negative in my other post... this idea is definitely doable, but if they continue with their regular plan to have only 12 servers, it just won't be the same... 1-2 servers for the entire fanbase's character files, so any server you go to will load your character. After that, it's just a matter of making a fun game.

<valve|yahn> Will mods be able to set maxplayers > 32? Our plan is to allow a mod to go above this on a per-mod basis. No promises yet on that.

Seriously guys... an MMOG? Are you aware of how different MMOG network code has to be from non-massively multiplayer games? Are you aware of the incredible expense of starting an MMOG, just for the hardware and bandwidth and real estate? You'll probably have a good chance of funding an MMOG... as long as Michael Dell is your uncle. Or you happen to be a prince in the Saud family.

I don't think they're talking massive as in everquest massive... they are probably talking about maybe a thousand people at most playing at one time.
With sponsors, donations, advertisements (on the site or in-game), etc... a mod team could probably afford the bandwidth (MMORPGs typically use less bandwidth per person than action games because less happens) for enough servers (running 64+ people per server if Source supports it... if not, you could try to run multiple servers on the same computer using different ports) to support their fanbase.

It's possible... but it would take a lot of effort and good PR.

I dont think many people want to pay for playing mods.

Sorry to say but im so positive this mod will fail. Im not bashing, just telling it the way it is. Do you know how much it costs to run servers for a mmo game? A sh!t load of money. Do you have the money? Do you think Valve will help? Do you think gamers will help? No. Servers cost alot to run and to maintain. Look at Asherons call 2, they had plenty of servers but people stopped playign and now they cant afford to keep them running cause of few players. So they are cutting a few servers out. Its good to believe and hope but your mod has few "modders" which are probably not professional and dont have alot of experience. If I were you, I would just stop with the plan and move on to something better. Good luck.

Depends if you define mmo as "one server, loads of players" or "loads of servers, 32 players on each". The latter is entirely possible, I had planned on having a go at it for my hl 1 mod.

I should have visited this forums earler

Hey,

Just letting you know the website is http://fo.hl2files.com .

The faq answers also those wonderful questions you put up, which was basically the same one. Ands the info page hasgeneral info about the mod, I'll be posting mapping information soon.

Yes, you can have mutiple servers networked together through a program which i'm going to write, and mods should be able to set the max player limit above 32, according to valve.

We are currently looking for additional modelers and mappers, and we need a gfx artist, and sound technician. You wanna join mail me [email protected].

And to guy who said my mod was going to fail, **** YOU, I'm going to continue with it, and its going to get done, theres always unpredictible setbacks, but thats not going to stop me. I'm determined!!!!

aside from the problems already mentioned, you're going to come across major lag issues if you've got all those people on at once. Even if you get a fast server doesn't mean it won't lag.

Your mod will be really hard to make, and I'm sure there's a 99% chance you won't get it playable and successful. Good luck anyway. :|

First of all its not server, its plural, 20 servers networked together.

Is there a mod that is easy to make has been successful? I haven't seen one yet.

you got your work cut out for you, but good luck :)

oh and btw, as far as i have read VALVe are going for the mod to decide the max amount of players... of course with a max, but should be more than 32

Im going to pay for my computer upgrades. Im going to pay for HL2. I AM NOT going to pay extra to play a fan mod.

I doubt it's even legal to make people pay to play a mod without signing a contract with VALVe.

Um.... its going to be free, the only possible thing that we might do if were really desperate for server funds is run an ad in the login program. But no spyware, spyware ads suck, they may pay more , but I don't care.

We really need more team members we currently have 7, if you have talent and would like to help email me, [email protected], all help is welcome.
