Hi,
Only got the game last night. Went into the game menu and did some kind of a grpahics card test that was given as an option.
It gave me a FPS of 80.25. Is that good or bad as I dont know much about computers??

I have a geforce4 FX5800 I think, along with 1GB of RAM and an Athlon xp2800 processor.

Also I have just downloaded latest NVidia graphics driver to version 66.93. Is this correct??

Thanks,

Andy

80 fps is a good frame rate. Nvidia driver is fine too. You have nothing to worry about :)

Elitest. Anything above 12 is technically playable, but you want 20+ or it looks horrible. I average 30-40 and that is fine (Would love more, but graphics cards not here yet)

I agree with the other peoples comments, and also it really comes down to if you are happy with what you are seeing yourself.

C'mon,everybody!
Let's hear some 100 more people say it is a good FPS!

Well, if you insist MadGuy ;)

Yes, its a good framerate.
IF YOUR A NOOB! OMG! OMGLOLOLOLSOPNWE?D!111OMFG.
Sorry, just playin' around.

I dont want to start a thread regarding question I got so I will ask here.
What does make To FPS be good or bad?
Im newbee in online playing ...I never played before in my life.
I have broadband speed 384/64
Radeon 9600
I think I have Burton [email protected]thing like that.
512 RAM.

Could I play HL2 online without some BAD laging?

1166 Counter-Strike players only uses around 10 Mbit/s, so you can play online with almost any connection. It isn't the bandwidth that makes 56K unplayable, it's the slow response time.

Sure (will probably take a while for fast servers to appear, though). There's two issues here: Lag is mostly down to connection speed (yours is ok), where as fps is graphics card. For playing online, you want low lag (ping < 150 or so) and a decent framerate - the higher the better, but >30 really.

Naturally, the better your lag and fps are, the better you will do.

Actually...

Technically, our eyes can only see at 30 FPS. But you can definately tell the difference between 30 and 80 FPS.

I know when I had my *old* comp and upgraded to my previous one with old CS, I never checked FPS but suddenly I could aim much smoother. My new FPS was like 150 or something, made a great difference to how I played the game (You always get updated opponent positions, which gives you that critical time to take aim and know what to do next, etc).

So really, rather go with 80+ FPS and medium styled graphics then 30-40 FPS for a higher level graphic. It looks good on all settings...

I've heard much higher. And everyone has proof supposedly. Frankly, I don't care. I haven't found a game yet that gives me less than 30fps.

FPS is frames per second...The higher the better, 15-20 slighty laggy, 30-50 < default

anything above 50= good performance, no lag :|

FPS on a compture screen ARE DISTICNTLY DIFFRENT FROM tv fps.

yes, tv at ~30 fps is enough to trick our brains into thinking we are seeing fluid motion. But that 30 fps doesn't have as much to do with our eyse as it has to do with bandwidth and file sizes of common television feeds. alot of the tv that makes it beliveable is MOTION BLUR

With computres games, they don't have motion blur, so we need more fps to achive the same fluidity.

ALSO, fps can change dramaatically depending on what is happening in the scene, and the higher the overall fps, the better chance of it never dipping below 30fps.

On most of pixar's movies, they have a special rendering set where they incorperate motion blur. if you compaire motionblur to non motionblur renders, you can easily tell the diffrence at even up to 60fps.

iget 50-60 fps on my laptop its a ati 9700 128
and am happy with it

I hate you. I get like 20 FPS. Either give me your computer, or go to hell.
Just kidding. About the go to hell part. So give me your computer.

Man this is all ****ed, My comp is.

AMD 2.4ghz
1024 RAM
Nvidia Gforce FX 5700le 256mb

9... yeah thats NINE, ****ING N I N E, frames per Second....

And I have no Idea why.

I have updated the drivers, Messed with Rates, I have a 1/2 T1 Connection... 9 depressing Frames Per second.

No, 80 FPS sucks. Throw your copy of HL2 in a river and set fire to your computer.

well you should be able to tell when you play, no real need to start a thread over (unless you want to brag :D)

specs

AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (1.7GHz)
512 MB pc2100 DDR RAM
128MB Geforce FX 5600 Ultra

I run the game at 1024x768 w/ most settings on high except AA and AF which are at 2x apeice and the game runs very very smooth for me. when im in a room its consistently 60 fps, outside is around 45.

i really dont care how fast the framerate of a game is...it could be 30 for all i care but i would much rather have it CONSTANTLY be 30 without any dips or spikes...

Did your mom smoke crack while you were still in her?

If my game runs at 30 fps my eyes hurt severly and Everythign looks chopified and distorted.

Actually I did some testing on this subject. I found that poeple have thier own tolerance to frame rate lvls.

For example. When you watch tv it runs at 30fps. If you see a computer monitor running o-say 60hz or 60fps, you see the screen flicker flicker flicker, becuase the scan lines on the cpu screen are movign way faster then your tv.

So its realy depends on the person. I for one have a high bad tolerance for low frame rates, after playing on computers for years, even watchign regular tv shows hurt my eyes.

isnt it also to do with the average framerate, by that i mean, it may average say 30 fps, but be 15 when something moves and 45 when stationary, so it appears choppy, but 30fps constant, would that be fluid ???

neway, p4 3gig HT, 512ram, 9600xt, usually get ~45 outside avg, ~70 inside avg thats in 1024x768 all details maxed, noAA :( and 4x AF

The eye can see far more than 30fps, just think of the amount of detail your brain recieves when you look around, then compare that to a 2D television picture. The amount of detail is considerably less when looking at a TV Screen.

Also, have you ever looked at a video of a computer monitor, where you can actually see the refresh of the screen. I can never have a monitor at 60hz because it hurts my eyes, I really have to use somewhere between 85-160hz (resolution dependent) on a CRT monitor.

And your post is better how.... you are not even on topic. Everyone is chiming in because the poster ASKED. Idiot. :flame:

I wish I could get 80 FPS. I am a stutter bug victim and HL2 brings my 9800XT to it's knees at times. :x

I have not actually checked the FPS I get on my 9800 Pro yet, but it is playable so im not to bothered.

I amazingly escaped this sound stutter problem which seemingly affects the majority.

No, the stuttering effects a very very small minority. It just seems large because everyone posts a thread about it, whereas no-one posts "OMFG, I don't have any stuttering problem" threads.

Thats a valid point, just like the HL2 is shit threads which appeared the be the majority when in fact we was all playing and enjoying it while they spent their time whining about it.

I have never started a OMFG I have the stuttering problem thread....and I have the problem so I guess saying "everyone" is not very accurate is it.

From where did this myth arise? Our eyes do not see at 30fps, lol. Look it up.

Our eyes are the most complicated and most finely tuned optics system in the world. Technically you cannot speak about eyes in terms of frame rate but without splitting hairs our eyes probably see into the hundreds of frames per second.

Our eyes register something around 60 images/second. If it's under 90 fps your eyes will be pretty tired anyway after a while, though.

Motion blur is from the fact a that standard cameras have a certain "exposure time" in which the lense is open to allow light in.

This causes 2 things:
1: on a still image, the longer exposure time allows for more light.
2: on a moving image, the longer exposure time gives a blured effect due to the fact that the image isn't always in the same place.

(see <link>http://www.hitoshi.net/photos/days/p1210049.JPG</link> for a 1second exposure example, notice the moving lights have blured, and the car is bright)

Normal Video cameras get a picture at about 1/30th of a second, ie, the lense has an exposure time of about 1/30th of a second, in this time the exposure effects of number 2 are aquired, and our eyes are tricked into thinking that there is more information then really taken.

Computer games don't have this exposure effect, and so our eye don't get to see that "extra" information, and thus 30fps isn't really upto snuff.

OUR EYES PERCIVE LIGHT AT A RATE MUCH GREATER THEN 30FPS, BUT THEY ARE TRICKED BY THE BLUR EFFECT INTRODUCED BY A CAMERAS EXPOSURE TIME.
