Just so you know, pontifex means "bridge builder" in (Roman? Greek?). What do you think that relates to inside the story?

That's just racist! but well, freeman lays the way to rebellion so he is a kind of pontifex.

I would of thought it to be something to do with the fact you have to cross the bridge gapping the canyon by 'building', if you will, a new method.

You don't build a bridge, natch, but you take the tools and equipment given to you in the game (Gravity gun and burnt out cars/abandoned cars) to find your own way across. You still bridge the gap, just not in conventional terms.

I believe it means that Gordon is the bridge to freedom for humanity. That's pretty obvious throughout the series. Probably has some deeper meaning too.

I'm pretty sure it just has to do with Gordon getting the car over the destroyed bridge.
