I still can't get my joystick to work. I set it up in the launcher, calibrate it, and no matter what I do, when I get in game, nothing happens when I try to set it up.
Hmm that's odd. What joystick is it? And you're going into options/controls and finishing the settings right?

Mine works fine, Logitech Wingman Extreme.

I have the same joystick. I fixed it kind of. I took my dad's and his works, but now I can't change the A and Z keys to accelerate/decelerate to the throttle. There are too many commands too. I think I will fail miserably at this game with all the reaching for the keyboard and flying at the same time.

If you have the same joy it's optimized pretty well for the game (My joystick CAME with the game as it was the best suited for it at the time) The way the controls are set up- even by default- has it that the times you'll need to be pressing keyboard, you won't be in heavy combat. While in combat you'll only need joystick. Trust me, once you get used to it the commands are pretty good.

Only real changes I made is, go into ship controls, and make Button 7 decellerate. Then just keep full speed on all the time. That way when adjusting speed, all you have to do is press button 7 to slow accordingly/stop. I don't reccomend turning "auto match speed" on like the training instructor tells you to.

Make sure button 6 is afterburner too.

Button 4 countermeasures, button 02 target nearest hostile, button 03 fire missiles.

The throttle (for me at least) doesn't work ingame, but if it does for you, that would be a good thing to use for speed too.

Ok, cool. I am just used to trying to use the throttle for all flight combat games. What are countermeasures and how do I keep on full speed all the time?

Ok, this sounds dumb, and it probably has been answered, but do i need the v1.2 patch? Or can i just run retail FS 2 with the textures pack?

I'm not sure, but if you have 1.2 it'll alleviate any possible bugs from old versions

press \ for full speed.

The training mission guy will explain all this though (countermeasures, shield management, etc)

Ok, i am up and running! hanks for all your help.

Now when is that fight?? :)

Anytime just hit me up via xfire or AIM or any messenger.

Make sure you're running with those features/commands on too :D

A quick installation quide
1) Download all 3 CDs for FS2 HERE
2) Unrar each file inside the rar files, the 3 files should be in .iso format
3) Download daemon tools also from that website
4) Install and mount CD1, follow by the second and third CD when asked for during installation
5) Download v1.2 patch HERE
6) Download FS2 Open Installer 3.6.5 HERE
7) Download the mv_zpack HERE
8) Install FS2 Open and extract everything from the mv_zpack into your FS2 directory
9) Run FS2 Open launcher and enable all the effects and stuff you like and hit Run to play

The site that the disc images were hosted on has run out of bandwidth. :( Is there any mirrors? Oh, and would I install the 1.2 patch after I did everything else?

Whoops, forgot to add that in. You install 1.2 patch then you install FS2 Open and all the other stuff.

Looks like my linking on several forums of it has done it in for the month :[. You can find torrents of it easily, though, or get the skimpy version from Home Of the Underdogs, then get the rest of the voice files etc from someone else or from the HLP FTP.

Version 3.6.7 of the media VP's and executable has been released. A LOT of great improvements in this pack so I figured I'd give this a bump with it, worth it.

Get all necessary files here.

If you are just viewing this thread, don't use the 3.6.5 files I linked to, use these 3.6.7 ones, as these are the newest and most stable yet.

edit: Repost of the teaser video posted earlier if you haven't ever played Freespace before, definately check this short video out.

Great news, my mate had it, but now I have a Joystick it will be the kindest addition

[edit] the download mirrors are broken, if anybody can suggest a course of action, the time is now

They work just fine for me, I just started a download (then cancelled, because I already have it, but to test that it works)

http://scp.indiegames.us/download.php

^ That's where you get the files.

Did you download bit.torrent before downloading the CD data

can you get Freespace1+2 in the UK?

I know its on whitelabel, but the only whitelabel products being sold locally is Black Hawk Down, should I look in Currys and Comet

It was sold globally as far as I'm aware. Definately in the UK, lots of people from there are a big part of the Freespace community. Good luck finding a retail version though anymore because it's not produced anymore (they're still sold by places that have them, but it's not everywhere in every store like the good old days)

There's a download link for the ISO's of the CD's (completely legal and allowed) earlier in the thread.

There's also a cut down version hosted at the Home of the Underdogs, but using Hard Light Productions and SCP content you can get the files that make it identicle to the retail version (high res support, voice files, etc)

Ok i'm confused as to what the heck i'm supposed to download.

I've installed Freespace 2 from my cds and patched it to 1.2. Now i'm not sure what files to download. I know i download the VP's and what not but theres so many damn things listed on the site and so many different things that the site is telling me to download that i'm just ridiculously confused.

Can someone please tell me everything that i need to download?

I've just downloaded FS2_open_367_p4.zip
Now do i have to download the zpack.zip as well?
And once i install FS2 Open can i uninstall it without having to uninstall FS2?
Thats pretty much everything.

Edit: Hang on, read SomeFool's step by step guide. That clears my main questions up.
