Friend Cannot Play CSS, Help

My friend needs help with his computer. Here is what he wanted me to post:

when i try to play cs:source, i receive an error that states "failed to set video more - resetting to defaults. game will now restart with the new video settings." after it runs its five second course, i receive another error that states: "failed to set video mode - fallnig back to safe mode settings. game will now restart with the new video settings." again, it fails. then, i receive the final error message that states: "failed to set video mode. this game has a minimum requirement of directX 7.0 compatible hardware."when source was first released, i used this video card, and it worked fine. a little slow, but fine. to my knowledge, it used dx seven, but, of, course, it had to. so why will not it work now?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update drivers
Make sure he has DirectX 9.0c

check and check. not really sure why this happened. i thought new drivers would have done the trick.

Do not use the new drivers (77.72.) Revert back to 71.89. I had the same problem and I was using a Directx 7 card. When I installed the 77.72 drivers, I had the same problems as your friend.

Same problem here. I got a DX9 card and I was getting those errors. Had to get the 71.89 drivers and that did it.

Use the 77.76, or 77.77 or 75.xx or 77.74 or 77.56. 71.89 is too old, i had this problem and only had to go up to 77.76.
