From Nvidia to ATI

So I've got a FX 5700Ultra in my box right now but just ordered a 9800pro from NewEgg. My question is that I've heard there can sometimes be conflicts between the Forceware drivers and the cats. What would I need to do to, other than formatting, to try and prevent any problems? Or...is this all just heresy and I'll just pull one out and put the other in...problem free? I figured someone here would have some ideas about this.

Also, I'm completely unfamiliar with the Catalyst drivers so what's the best ones out right now?

BTW, I did search and found a few threads concerning this already, but the only answers I saw were to format first and start fresh. Thanks guys.

I had no trouble upgrading from geforce4 ti4800se to 9800pro last year, just uninstalled the detonators, turned the machine off, swapped gfx cards, turned the machine back on again and installed the catalysts.

I'm guessing people that have trouble swap cards before uninstalling detonators.

:naughty: Look for a program called Driver Cleaner, it cleans out everything that an uninstaller might leave behind.

yeah. Just uninstall the drivers in safe mode (using drivercleaner) swap cards, reboot, ignore the windows screens that are like "new hardware found" and install the 4.6cats that you already downloaded.

If I understand your thought correctly, you want to leav your Forceware after you install the new card or want to reinstall Forceware? If so, you need only to install the coresponding drivers to your video card. So if you have an ATi, then you have to install only Catalyst, if nViadia - Forceware(Detonator).

Thanks for the help guys.

So...start up in safe mode, run drivercleaner to remove anything Nvidia. Shut down, switch cards (remove 5700u toss in 9800pro), then start up normally, disregard XP "new hardware found" message, and then run the 4.6's? Do I have that right? Cool...well I'll let you know how it goes once I get the card in. Should be the end of the week....

good luck to you. The 9800 is great.. :)
Got one myself.

I'm not sure if it's just me or what, but when I first got my 9800pro the performance wasn't quite what I expected until I upgraded my powersupply to a 350W PSU from a 300W since my mobo killed the 300W PSU. Now my 9800pro is blazing fast and yet keeping nice and cool ;) Anyone else experienced this?

Okay, I've got the card in and it looks good so far in Far Cry. Only played it about 5 minutes though, just to test.

Quick question regarding driver cleaner. I selected Nvidia in the options for DriverCleaner and clicked "Clean". It did it's thing but soon after I got an error message from XP telling me I was going to delete a crucial file for windows. Or maybe it was that I had already deleted a file....can't remember. Anyway, I just hit cancel/disregard/fuq off and went ahead with installing the 9800 and the cats. Is that a normal message to get from windows after running drivercleaner?

Like I said, AFAIK it's running fine now and I'll test it more tonight, but I just thought I'd ask anyway. Cheers!

you might want to try the cat 3.7 betas, ive heard people are getting huge gains in games such as far cry and that there is less penalty using AA.
