A buddy of mine recommended me this article on RockPaperShotgun. It is about a turn based tactics game made by an indie Brit studio. Imagine the planning stage of one of the earlier Rainbox Six games in a tbs setting. There are a couple of different game modes and they all consist of just 5 turns. It is basically a play by e-mail game, but to make things easier you use the in-game lobby to play game with randoms or people you know. You can also play against the AI, but this game is all about the multiplayer. This is what it looks like:

I pre-ordered the game and I am now playing the beta. It's a lot of fun. Usually I am not really into tbs, but this is so fast and tactical it almost plays out like a topdown shooter. Got my ass handed to me in the two online games I played but the AI doesn't seem that hard. Also impressive is the amount of features the game already has. The online lobby may look spartan, but it has chat, a library of replays and a match making system. You can also upload games you have played to YouTube. There is no sound (yet) and you can't see the planning phase of things, but it is great for bragging rights and such :)
Check out how I got pwnd online:

You can pre-order the game here. If you do, start up a game with me. I'll be Shakermaker as usual.

I like the idea, but not really the implementation. The art style is not to my taste.

Hmm... I would download the beta to check it out if I didn't have to pre-order. Looks like a pretty decent game.

Was told of this a few months ago in one of the IRC gaming-channels I frequent, it looks really good in my opinion, shame I don't have the time to check it out, too many games.

The official release isn't until later this year, so no hurry. Besides, it means more time for me to work on my tactics. :)

The Mac client was released today and that runs just as well as the one for PC. I am really amazed at what these three guys did so far.

Holy ****, how did I not know about this game sooner?

This looks god damned awesome.

It is pretty fun. I have been playing a couple of turns at least every day since I bought it. There is a big patch coming out next week that should squash most of the bugs that have popped up and add some more polish.

Do let us know when they get a demo up or something, the price tag's a bit steep for me at the moment but I'd love to try it.

Will do. The devs are also trying to get on Steam, so that might mean some nice sales. The real release won't be until after the summer.

I might as well bump this thread since the game was officially released earlier this week. It seems be doing really well, being in the Steam top ten and all. For those of you that are new to this game and are interested, check out this WTF is ... TotalBiscuit did:

If you can't be bothered to watch, TB describes the game as:

A cyberpunk Full Spectrum Warrior turn based simultaneously X-Com Laser Squad play-by-e-mail Neuromancer game. Rainbow Six crossed by Uplink.

If that piqued your interest, check out the review Eurogamer did.

I was disappointed when I saw this game on Steam because I thought it was Subversion.

The game still sounds pretty cool, but it's a bit pricey.

I don't get why Mode7 insists on selling the game in twos. Ten euro / dollar would be the perfect price point for Frozen Synapse.

Can somebody explain to me why there is a "sniper" in close quarters combat?

Is there coop yet or more than 1v1 multiplayer yet? I heard that the developer is going to do that... but... haven't seen anything about it yet.

No co-op or more than 1v1 multiplayer yet. And to be honest, while I can see two person co-op work, I don't think playing with three persons or more would be a lot of fun, since you'd have to wait for all of them to end their turns. In theory it is possible of course, but in reality games would drag on, especially with randoms.

This i've been interested in picking this up but aint biting with only 2 packs on sale =s

You guys who want it but don't want to pay for a 2 pack need to pair up with others and one of you buys and gifts, while the other paypals money over to the other. Only who you trust of course.

Great game, I love the concept.

Not a fan of the art style and stuff, but oh well. It's indie I guess, and art like this is a lot easier to make than something realistic.

First online match, against Raz.

I won! It was a slaughter. And he had more experience than me, though it was his first online match too.

Anyone want to split like Raz suggested above?

I want to. Was about to come in and ask the same thing.

My name is Vegeta897 (capital V), I played on Texas.

Add me and challenge me!

Raziaar

Texas

The reason we're playing on Texas is because texas is a shitty place and well... I don't know why, we just are. The servers all suck anyway, their whole server system where if you play on any other server but the one you're on it doesn't save your stats or wipes them or... I don't know.

Felicity, but I can't get on anyway, I'm just on offline mode

Pro tip:

Hold shift+V while selecting an enemy unit and move the mouse around in circles to see their line of fire. Doesn't pass through walls, just like a rocket's line.

Just found this out. Also works for determining shotgun distance... straight lines become diagonal.

Edit: Looks like I've got a taker already. :)

Anyone want to trade an extra copy of this for a copy of Terraria? Grabbed a 4-pack and have one over. PM me here or on Steam ^^^.

The music's great - I regret not getting the soundtrack edition now. It sounds like Perfect Dark! It looks like the Perfect Dark ui. It's like Perfect Dark meets Ghost in the Shell, Deus Ex and Lazer Squad - all with Syndicate's callous disrgard for life. I can play it at home, on my netbook, and on my crappy PC at work. There's too much awesomeness here for me to handle.

I agree about the music. Heck, i wanna buy this game mostly for the amazing sounding OST

I bought the soundtrack version after watching that wtf is frozen synapse video and the guy raved about it. :D

Krynn72 is me. I havent been able to log on to the Texas server though :(

EDIT: Ok, I got on and added Vegeta and Raz, but it couldn't find you viper. Badhat, are you on texas?

Also, good god, this game HATES being alt-tabbed. It takes like 5 minutes for it to figure out wtf happened and come back, flickering my screen the entire time. I blame the Torque engine.

Weird. I often get alt tab problems, but this tabs in and out in seconds for me with no odd flickering.
