With HL2 being (or at least seeming) like its just around the corner, peeking at us when it thinks we are not looking, people have been upgradeing thre computer, but whos been formating?

I know for a fact my computer is a totall mess of adobe images, spyware/adware and too manys mp3s that a healthy person should have, I only play 3 games lately (Doom 3, Ragnarok online...and hl2 when it comes)

So Im going to be backing up afew things, then formating, so my computer is nice and clean for hl2, after all you dont want to be embarresed when Half life 2 has to crawl under all the rubbish to get to your computer do ya?

edited for stupid mistakes*

i did a format on this PC in November 2003 and since then i have kept it fairly clean.. actually to be honest.. i have been very careful in keeping things neat and tidy so far.

the main reason is... well formatting is alot of work.. especially when u ur programs installed and set to the favorite settings.. formatting becomes a hassle when its really not needed.

so no format for this PC :p

yes, formatting is a good idea. i format for fun actually.

i have my unattended windows xp pro installation slipstreamed with service pack 2 ready to welcome hl2 onto my hd. gotta love unattended xp installs where you don't have to install ANY driver manually.

you know i've thought about that ... but i dont know how to really back anything up wihtout using a disk ... i heard you can partition your drive or something like that? im not that good , i mean i could do it if someone told me but ... i really WOULD like a clean comp for this masterpiece

i'll format it and install xp pro with sp2... delete usless windows programs and services.... then all the drivers and software (mIRC, Firefox, Winamp, Office, Ad-Aware, Azureus)... then install hl2... defrag and cleanup... then im done for life.

I formatted my computer like 5 times within the last week :/ then again I had a fricking horrendous virus.
oh and the drive I am formatting is 80gb.

my own fault though.
.. oh and to answer your question, yes I plan to format again before HL2 :D
you want to see unhealthy Mp3s?!

and thats not even my full list.

I've formatted c-drive (5gb) probably around 15 times since last August, but I've yet to format d-drive (110gb). I'll probably format D once I get my new computer (not buying a new harddrive), but until then (probably around October) I'm just leaving everything the way it is.

STEP AWAY FROM KAZAA OR I'LL SIC THE RIAA ON YOUR ASS!

I got too much stuff on my computer to format and it's still pretty clean so no I won't be formatting.

^ same here, too much stuff for me to format, and my drive is not clean but i will of course make room for hl2 :) not a problem

Plugged in my new card and formatted only yesterday.

Talk about good timing! :p

Oh my god, you sick fawk! :naughty:

I'll just defrag my 80GB IDE drive (C). My little 6GB IDE drive (D) is what I store all of my music on. Before I download HL2 through Steam I'll move it over to my fresh 120GB SATA drive (E). That's where all of my games will be installed, starting now.

I just bought a 200 GB Seagate HD...reformatted...and now I am having a s**tload of problems with this current install.

Partitions are your friend. I'll be getting a new drive so windows will be installed on that one while all my data will remain on the current drive. No hassle.

i'm going to defragment my hard drive but not format it, especially when my computer only arrived today

I dont use Kazaa, believe it or not 98% of those are my own rips.
I have a shitload of games, and a shitload of music (cant live without my music)
all legal.

who the hell uses Kazaa nowadays anywhoo? IRC is so much more convenient.

I'm going to bite the bullet and do a FULL defrag of my 80gb HDD using System Mechanic. It's going to take forever.....

Let me explain slightly. A windows defrag moves data about so all your files are contigous (not fragmented). But it leaves bunches of files scattered about the drive. A full defrag with system mechanic moves EVERY piece of data on your disk to the beginning, leaving a nice big empty space at the end of the drive, so when I install HL2 it's files will all be in the same place. The trouble is it takes about 10 times longer than a regualar defrag. Last time I tried it my computer was out of action for 48 hours until I got fed up and cancelled it at 60%.

that is completely insane, it seriously takes that long?
wow.
what kinda comp is this running on? (if that even matters)
however, wow yeah..

I have partitions for my windows drive, and my games drive, and then another for my music drive (and then I have a second comp that I have networked and it has a 40gb HD) usually I just format my C:\ (windows partition).. but I had an extremely nasty virus that made me format all my partitions, master boot records, bios etc... I mean I had to make my comp emaculate.

speaking of which, that pic with all my mp3s was taken a couple days before the virus hit.. so I have a grand total of one mp3 on my comp currently...
Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction.

GAH Im waiting for HL2 before I start ripping all my cds again.
damn virus

Well maybe I exagerated slightly, all I know is that after two days of it I was so fed up I cancelled it.

I'm curious, do you have system mechanic? So far it's the only software i've come accross that does this kind of defrag.

Oh, my comp is 2.6GHz, 512Mb RAM.

naw I dont have system Mechanic, I hardly even defrag to be honest... hell HL2 will be the first game I would be willing to install and defrag for.
