"Full Source SDK to be released next week!

Breaking news: The most recent Steam news post has revealed that the much awaited Source SDK will be released sometime next week. In addition to this, there will also be a "surprise for the community" which will be announced alongside the SDK release. The release of the Source will open up many new opportunities for the numerous Half-Life 2 mods that have been in pre-production, allowing them to finally commence development. In relation to this, a minor Half-Life 2 patch has been released which will reduce the infamous "sound stutter bug" that has been affecting some users. "

saw that on mod data base .... wonder what the surprise might be?

Yep, posted later.

Surprise is most likely a DM MP mode for HL2.

Finally mods can get into full production and start showing more then just weapon renders!

Why is it that you always see /weapon/ renders for early mod work? Seems quite a sideline element to be the subject of so many proof-of-concept type images.

They should be making maps for CS:S as we speak so that maps would be ready for their mod with only a few entity changes. The only thing people can't start work on, at this point, is the code.

It's not because they think the models are the most important part. It's because that's all that can be done before the game and SDK are released. It's hard to show off code that doesn't exist (well, it's hard to show off code... period) or maps that can't be made. Models and textures are the only things that can really be made without an SDK... so, why not start working on them early to get a head start? You should start seeing mods pimping map screenshots in the near future (since we have the new Hammer). You probably won't be seeing any major code changes for a while... because it's not out yet, it's the most complex part, and it's the hardest to show off.
