Ok, this will probably date me a little bit, but I've got a group of buddies that have been coming over to this office that we have for like 8 years now so we can all sit around and game all night while getting drunk and having a good time. In the past, we've played games such as Doom, Quake (1, 2, 3) and Delta Force. Our favorite is always Q2 - usually with the Lithium mod or Chaos or WOD or lately Kick (a soccer mod) which is a HUGE hit with these guys.

But I'm kind of sick of playing a game that was released like 10 years ago. I want to play something new, but just as exciting and fun. I'm dying to get the guys to upgrade their hardware and go out and purchase some better games so we can play HL2 DM w/ Garry's mod or whatever. I actually just downloaded a Dodgeball mode for HL2 as well which looks killer and I'd like to try that, but since I'm the only one who owns HL2 right now, I know these guys aren't going to want to shell out $30 just to play HL2 DM for a night.

So my question to you is, what games/mods can you recommend that you've played in a LAN environment with 5-8 people that has provided you with the most enjoyment. Hopefully you can recommend a game that's easy to learn because although most of these guys game, not all of them are regulars. We will be dealing with a few newbs who will have to be told what to do and what not.

Thanks for your help!!!

That's just the thing, everyone is all over the place, so there really is no game that 'everyone' has.

Just assume that we'd go ahead and buy the games that we wanted to play. I'm thinking of older games, that way they are cheaper and would run good on a variety of different hardware setups.

Flatout 2 is a very good racing game. Flatout 1 is great fun too, you might be able to pick it up somewhere.

C&C Generals is great too if you all like RTS a bit.

Battlefield 1942 is good too. I've had tons of fun with 10 people on the Desert Combat mod.

fear combat is free and there is always counterstrike 1.6 and counterstrike:source

Starcraft. You can pick up the battle chest for roughly $25 Canadian.
Soldat is also amazingly fun.

FEAR combat is mad fun for free

Just have one person with starcraft distribute it and play LAN..

such like that.

Oh, as for Starcraft... I think if you install the game with the CD Key 1000-00000-0000, it's some sort of "developer key" which is valid anywhere except Battle.net.

I've preordered DEFCON, I'll tell you how it is tomorrow, and see how Multiplayer is.

If you get drunk while playing go for CS 1., whenever I play with my mates we do the most stupid shit and laugh our asses off at it, even though were not drunk.

Yes, please do. I was a fool not to pre-order and now its too late! I'll still get it anyway. I want to support the crap out of these guys!:D

Though I just played the tutorial, DEFCON is easily a LAN game.
Extremely simple, fast to learn, but strategy is the key.
Games can last days or minutes, your choice.

For a value game, DEFCON is pretty awesome

Sven-Coop a hl1 mod
For Great Justice.

Call Of Duty 2 Multiplayer is fun aswell on the smaller maps. FEAR Combat is fun, but feels tedious sometimes. I propose MORTAL PONG as ruler, though.

Rainbow Six 3: Ravenshield

it can be found on the cheap games rack for 10 bucks now.

Worms Armageddon :D (Very cheap now)
Sven COOP (mod)
Battlefield 1942 + various mods
Warcraft 3 or Starcraft
