Did it seem to anyone else that while speaking, G-Man's voice sounded choppy, broken and "machine like" for the lack of a better word?

I couldn't tell if this was some sort of slowdown in the video or slowdown of the actual demo, or if he was meant to sound like that.

I've never played or even seen a second of any half life game or mod ever so I don't know from past experience. Can someone provide me a little backstory on this guy?

When watching this vid the first thing I thought was, hmm wonder if he's like an HL version of a terminator or something.

He always spoke like that, but nobody really knows who he is, or what he wants from you.

I think it is supposed to sound like that. It is a cross between the smoking man from the X-files and Agent Smith from the Matrix.

I like the way the G-Man spoke in the E3 vid's in 2003. He sounds more evil now, but at the same time it looks like he picked up a speech impediment. Change it back Valve.

the gman has always had a chopped up voice, its one of those geemanic (lol) qualities

In his final speach at the end of HL1, if you decide not to work for him he'll say:

"No regrets Mr. Freeman" but as he's saying it he sounds extremely constipated. It's his style and when I heard him say:

"Wake up Mr. Freeman ... Wake up and smell the ashes"

in the new video I was extremely unconstipated and I pooped myself.

...plus there is sounds of the machines behind.

interesting. he did have a pretty creepy vibe. how was introduced in the original? did you ever see him face to face? was he that stereotypical fps character that you never really meet, but you receive objectives from throughout?

LOL maybe I should just buy it. Is it still available at BestBuy or CompUSA?

sometimes he randomly changes his tone..its bizzare hel say a phrase then continue it with a totally wierd tone like wake up and smell the (tone change) AAASHes

you never speak face to face tell the very end of the game, half-life never used straight forward objectives.. you would just catch glimpses of him escapeing unscathed from hazardous situations or in one case next to what appears to be a nuke he never stays on screen long until the end were you are offered the job.. he just whatches over you... and then leaves or is behind something

Okay, okay I'll get it LOL. I'm steam adverse, can I buy it in the store still?

You saw him walking around throughout the game, but always just out of range to chase after him. You also see that he has some control over the portals. You don't speak to him until the very end though.

Buy it immediately.

If you do decide to get Steam though then Steam will allow you to download all of the Half-Life expansions (Opposing Force, Counter-Strike, DOD, TFC etc.) absolutely free.

So buy the CD. Install it. Install Steam. Run Steam. Play Half-Life. Play the expansions and then by then you'll finally be about reaady to play HL2 :D

Wait until the Original is ported to the source engine before buying, theres only about two months away, and you get two quality games.

One for budget (possibly)
And a sequal of the budget (full price)

Mine started out that way, but was so bad that I couldn't figure out what he was saying. It was obviously a computer problem and I ended up going through my settings until I found out that I had windows running the audio output through TotalRecorder. Once I changed that, it was fine.

He does have a strange way of talking, but shouldn't sound REAL bad. Just a bit strange, kinda like William Shatner has a strange voice sometimes.

Believe me, he talked a lot weirder in HL than he does now.

'You have limitlesssssssssssssss potential' :)

He lisps real bad in HL.
But it's hella cool, and even better in HL2. Come on, imagine the G-Man with a business man voice, that has no mysterious tone to it, this does.

I myself don't think G-Man is human.
He has trouble speeking correctly and he seems to have rather great control of them portals to Xen, etc.
You can't kill him and he's always watching you through the game.
He must be some kind of alien or something. :borg:

Now that I know it wasn't my video playing tricks on me, I really think he sounds like that software that reads typed text in a computer voice. Since this was my first true look at HL2 I was thinking in the opening scene with G-Man, "well this facial/voice system isn't all that great." Then as the video went on I realized it was either a video problem or he was meant to sound like that since all the other voice/facial things were done well. Very cool character. He kinda seems inorganic at the same time.

How can the G-man Be based on Agent Smith if Half-Life came out before (or a little after) the first Matrix?

I think gman is a cross between a hippie, batman, spider man, and porno freak, and constipated ant, and pie.

Mmmm pie. (sorry, couldn't resist) :E

you know what the sad thing is?
people who didnt play HL1, are going to think the G-Man was "matrix" influenced (you know agent smith) when in fact HL was out waaaaay before Matrix.

edit: damnit Lukes beat me to it... should read thread next time..

I think G-Man's voice acting was done by the same person who did Dr. Kleiner's voice. It's just my thought, what do you guys think? :D

You guys are cracking me up with the constipated and lisp talk. Whenever I shot the G-man he didn't die. The bullet ricocheted like he was a wall. I always thought the G-Man was the devil because he liked death and you were his apprentice because you killed a lot of things. So this HL2 thing was a major shock. Sorry to the person with this avatar, it's too funny thanks for it!

"...Sleeping on..thejob..."

-edit-

Anyways, I think the way they did his voice in both games is just f*ckin awesome

I have never played half life or any of its expansions

*flees the wrath of Chris_D"

OMG. This is the first time you have looked at HL2? Where have you been for the past year? You must not know all of the bitchin' features it has either.

Well, it has physics (very deatailed physics), the best storyline of any game ever, period... It supports old DX6 video cards and is able to be run on a 733Mhz processor. Plus tons of other stuff that is also cool. Oh yeah, it has really purdy water and lighting and the manipulator. (The orange thingy that pick stuff up and shoots it. This is like THE GAME... the one game to rule them all.

(I think the lord of the rings is dumb and nerdy, but I had to drop that line in there because I saw it on that flash movie.)

Want to know a secret? Buy it for 15.00$ off of amazon. Just HL 1. Then download steam, click on games. Say you want to dl HL 1. Put in your CD-Key and like magic it lets you download EVERY game except cs:cz and blue shift which isnt even an option. So you basically get the HL1 platinum edition for 15 dollars instead of 30.

Your bullets couldnt kill him because you were never meant to get a good shot at him in the first place, just catch glimpses of him.

ANyways I like his voice and he's a very creepy guy. His speech pattern is very random and he seems very well developed... in the mysterious sense.

I haven't heard enough lisp out of him in his HL2 presence, though. He should say, "So wake up, Mr. Freeman...wake up and...smell the ashessssssssssss." I love his voice. The G-Man is my absolute favorite character in the Half-Life universe. Got all his lines memorized and whatnot. :E

It's the same voice actor from the first game though so he'll probably have a couple S'sssssss throughout the game. Hopefully he gets a lot more lines. I did find certain parts of his voice seem to chop like they were from the video stuttering, though. Especially when he says, "the job." Sounds like it skips just before then. That might just be the video though; he's never made such a staccato pause before in his speeches.

mate, of course that was just the video...think the g-man stutters like a little school boy!

man hes more hardcore than even jack bauer!

go go g-man power!

can you say 'fanboi noob''?

WTF? Yeah, I can say that. Look, here it goes. *ahem* "Fanboi noob."

I was showing him the cool stuff in HL2 because he is just now learning about it. I noticed that you are quite the argumentative smart ass around these forums. Why don't you just keep you useless arguments and smartass remarks to yourself?

but he doesnt work for the government. or does he? hmmmmm

would be cool if this was like the crappy move miracle. i doubt anyone will get that.
