Gabe Newell says 40fps.

What settings are you gonna run at?

From http://www.city-17.net/int_gaben1.php:

City-17.net: We know the minimum suggested speed is 700 mhz, What are the recommended system requirements?

Gabe Newell: If you want everything turned on, running 32-bit 1280x1024? Hmm. I'd think you would run about 40 FPS with a 9700 Pro and a P-IV 2 GHz. Given the scalability of many different parts of the system, you have to add a quality dimension and target frame rate.

What do you all think about this? Obviously he's just making a rough estimate, but I'm happy about this since I've been wondering what fps my new super computer could get.

:bounce:

heh im between mid and high, because i love when the game is silky smooth, i will see wut its like with everything on (me and my 9800 pro) then tune it in from there.

I voted high, but I'll probably be dropping the res to 1024x768 and boosting the AA/AF action a bit. I'm currently running 1800+ with a 9700 pro. Once the processor is upgraded (hopefully to the 2800+ range right before release) I should be sitting pretty nicely.

well i got an Athlon 2800+, 9800pro 128, 1024ddr pc3200 so im expecting 60+ fps.

I will go with 1024x768 with medium detail or 800x600 with high detail. Will need to upgrade my duron, obviously...9700 pro, so graphics shouldn't be that much a problem...

I have to say im not sure yet. radeon 9500 + 2500(clocked at 2100mghz(10.5x200, 3000+) + 512 single channel ddr400 I will probally run 640x480 or 800x600 max detail. Online play i would drop the detail down to med probally to ensure no frame dips. yuk.

this makes me very happy, i have a p4 2.6ghz, 1024 dual channel ddr333, and a geforce FX5600 256mb i was nervous about weather or not i would be able to pull 60fps at 1024x762 AA/AF at 4x, 32bit, but i guess i'll be okay. not too high detail but high enough. and 40fps is not that choppy.

40fps isnt choppy at all for most games. 25 and below is when you start to worry:cool:

With vsync on its hard to tell the difference between 42 fps and 85.

my goal is to have as much turned on as possible an maintian 30fps.

yea same. i already know i can do that but i think ill be able to get 50+ even though there is not a much of a noticable difference between 40 and 50 if any.

Tweak the settings but put it on high for the first time, my monitor sucks so its max res is 1024x768 so i'll hit the aa/af up.

Personally, I would be willing to gain a little speed by removing a few details... But it depends on what kinds of details. For example, I dont care crap about view range. If Barricade would have been foggy near the barricade and you couldnt see much of the polys behind it, I wouldnt care... I'm used to playing Morrowind on a 700/GeforceDDR anyway :)
But no compromise for close detail...

But now we know the type of fps game its gonna be: SC or TROAD. Both are horrible at fps... Really horrible... 40 on a 9700/2.0 is really low, even for high detail, considering today. But its designed for the future, not like many other games thats designed for a engine 2 years old.

Problem comes when its MP... 40 fps will not cut it in a fast MP game. Unless he means STABLE 40 fps (minimum) in any condition.

40fps would be a nice fps to have under all conditions, however i think with my system specs i will try and aim for 30fps running on 640x480, 16bit on a mid ranged detail level. (only got an athlon 1.33ghz w/gf4 :()

lol....1.33Ghz and ge4 can run it on 800x600x32 with medium details. I bet it would run it at 30+fps.

hopefully my 1.8A p4 won't hold my 9800 Pro back too much

4x AA and 4x AF dont take much fps.

In americas army AA 4x took 0 fps and it didnt take any in HL either. The other slow down in fps was when i cranked the AF to 8x.

^^It depends on which video card you have also. A 9700 pro can do 4xAA without breaking a sweat but its a different story for my TI4400. But I never use it anyway and I'm confident my PC should handle HL2 just fine.

That will take a new motherboard, right? ( i have the same plans :p)

i have a ti 4200 and i loose no fps with 4x AA

Wow your lucky. I cranked the AA and AF all the way up, played a few rounds of AA and bam! Next thi8ng you know the card overheated and my ti4200 is gone.

Yeah but what game are you playing? Theres no way in hell you could play UT2K3 or America's Army with 4x AA and not lost any frames on a ti 4200.

His game maybe stays at the same fps, but skips 60 or so frames per second :)
It renders frame 1 and frame 60 == 60 fps as far as the game is concerned :p

Ive got a 9800 pro, and ill be running at 1024 with everything on, and if im not atleast getting 70fps ill lower the res, and if im still not ill be lowering the detail.

dont go overboard there aaron.

i'd like to run the game with some AA and AF, but what i really want is AF

Americas Army, with AA 4x my fps is around 30-50. Without AA its the same. When i turned AF on it definitly took me to the 20's so i have the AF set kinda low.
