So yeah, I went to a public LAN building last Wednesday and had my HL2 cds with me just in case the game crapped out for any reason and I needed to reinstall it. (Yeah, I have those fears due to OTHER of my games doing that, such as UT, Max Payne, among others). And I must have had my duffle bag open too far or something, because when I checked last night amidst a reinstall of my HL2 install (I had just wiped my HD yesterday due to problems that are now solved), and I couldn't find the third disk in the set. Not all of them were missing, just the third one.

So now to my point, where might I be able to contact Valve in demanding a new copy of the cd (Seeing as how I paid fifty bucks for the damn thing), and do they offer a special channel or site dedicated to such a problem? Thank you in advance.

probably not, as you can download and install from Steam anyway, but give it a try

You are a funny guy, demanding doesn't get you far in this world. The $50 you paid for was for the 5 cds you recieved already. Theres no, "I lost one cd I get another one free" type of deal, sorry.

got bittorrent?

i'm sure you could "aquire" an .ISO of the missing disc and install it using your steam username and password

It won't let you do that with a retail cd-key

Yeah like Ennui, as long as you have an internet connection and your online steam account has the registry code, you can install. I had a similar HardDrive incident and had to do this (luckily I have the DVD, not 3 CD's). You can intall your old Valve games if you have the registration codes for those. Installed the generations pack through this process

Not if his CD-Key is already stored on his online steam account, mind you he would have to validate the online installation files as some could be missing or corrupt

Yes it will. I have a retail copy and I downloaded a fair majority of the HL2 files...before I realised how much quicker it would be to just install it! I can't be bothered to explain why...

Well it didn't work when I tried it a few months ago. I pre-loaded the HL2 files though way back last Fall.

Well the problem is with just downloading these files is the fact that I'm on dialup, and to do so would be horribly painful. :-(

If in I DO download it through steam, will it offer me up some way to simply record these files onto cds to act as install cds?

You could just burn the individual HL2 content gcf's onto cd, and I guess it could work as an install cd, you would just have to copy and paste the gcf's into the SteamApps folder.

I may have to give that a try. After all, the only cd I'm missing is CD number 3...

I wouldn't be surprised if they send a new one. A couple years ago I accidentaly broke one of the 4 Baldurs Gate 2 CD's. So I sent a letter to them (can't remember which company) asking nicely and they sent me a new disk 3.

Would I get owned by the admins if I suggest finding a friend with HL2 and copying his CD3?

edit: Whooooot post counts

Well, I will write them a letter or an email very soon asking them for a new CD. I mean, I lose one cd out of the set, so whoever has it is pretty much screwed as they have no way of using it, and I DID pay for the cds. So I don't think a replacement cd for one of the cds is too much to ask for. After all, I've many complaints and demands I wish to make of a lot of other Valve things, but I don't because many of them aren't all that negotiable.

Don't write in a demanding tone, it gets you nowhere.

when i got my new pc, id lost the disk i installed steam and managed to download the game through steam ( And mines the retail version) so u can do it.... needless to say about three days later my disk mysteriously apeared... my mum had been tidying up, and thought it was one of my dads dvds and put it in his office

I broke my FIFA 2005 disk 2, but I doubt I can get another copy of it...

Either way, if it's a registered game, technically you should have options like these. I registered mine after all.

So tell me again why its a companies responsibility to give you another cd because you got yours stolen? Thats like when someone gets their cd player stolen out of their car and ask the manufacturer(spelling?) to have one for free, since they paid for one already. Does it happen? No.

Yes, but you shouldn't have to pay another fifty bucks to replace ONE of the five cds. I mean, it kind of proves that I'm not bsing them when I come to them with the cds, only having four of them. After all, what the hell are you gonna do with two copies of only one cd? It's not even a play or install I could understand if someone went to them with the game box and none of the cd's inside, but then asked for copies of all of the cds. That would be a little peculiar obviously, and they'd have every right to deny it. But this situation doesn't call for that, it only calls for the replacement of one cd, useless on its own. So even if someone out there WERE trying to use the cd, it'd be a waste of time. I could come up with other arguments right now, but I've got some stuff to do.

Well you are very lucky if they send you another copy of the 3rd cd...
Think about it... ppl could get free games if 5 people contact for example valve and the first guy is missing cd1, the second guy missing cd2 and so on... get the picture? ;)

Can't you just go to Steam and choose "Backup game files" in the properties for the game?
