hello, I just came up with a pritty good idea for a mod/game, its a massive multiplayer game kinda like Planetside.

When you start off playing the game you create a character. This character these gets a name sex and visual apperance (this is a skin apperance because your look will change depending on what abilitys you learn), This character starts of at a recruitment building in a city owned by the team he has joined. From here you pick what you what part of the army you want to join and also what skills you want to learn. There is an archive if skills of over 100, these range from weapon skills to pilot and driving skills (Like Planetside but more veriaty). Once you have used your starting points you start to wage war against 3 other countrys.

These countrys are like yours and proberly consist of Russia China America and Britan or something like that. They each have there own countrys that are big enough to have over 6/10 citys inside them. These citys are fully working and running on AI, cars drive to petrols stations people go shoping. Its a fully working society with everything from farms that provide food for the city and also research facilitys.

The actual objective of the countrys is to destroy the other country by all means nessesary. This can be done loads of ways, because each country runs on research money etc... when these favilitys are destroyed it makes it harder for the country to function.

Pretend the American team had 20 rereach builds compared to russia who only have 4 because the others where bombed by America. This means that the weapons the russians use will automatically be worse than the americans. To get these back in working order they have to re build the research facilitys, this is automatically done by civilian workers. But will be done a lot faster if a team of army enginers go into the city and fix it manually.

If you have played a game called 'Rise Of Nations' You will understand what I am talking about but the research will be decreased if the buildings are destroyed.

The game would be just a standard blow things up game for some people, but youare aload to take this one step further. What I mean by this is that they will be clans, or more like amry regiments. These regiments have points that run on the server, btw I forgot to mention. each server will have over 10,000 people on it all the date will be stored and each game will take over 1 mounth. What I mean by each game is what until a country takes over the whole world the game conitues. This will take a lot of time and normally change hands quiet a lot.

If your country is destroyed you get transfered to another country. You will keep all yours points except for a 30/40% deducation, lets say you had 40points you would go down to about 27. From here you pick all your abilitys again, if your country is not destroyed you can not change team and will only be able to get rid of an ability every 12 hours, what I mean by get rid of an ability is that it will be deleted from your profile and you will be given the points back.


I am not planning on making this mod unless somone could show me an engine that could handle so many people and also working societys running on AI. But I would like other peoples opinion about it and see if it would actually be possible and also also if it would be fun, if you have any questions ask me.

If you really love my idea and have some amazing way of how you think it will work tell, because I might be intrested in doing it. Would pr0oberly take us over 4 years, but what the hell. Got nothing better to do :D

You would hv to mk it on the Q3 eng or something lk that so that someone could run it VH.
It's lk a RTS/RPG type of a game ha?
 
So basically you're talking about Planetside (combat, skills etc) + Simcity (cities running on AI) + Rise of nations (rts elements) = TEH UBARGAME!!1 Well... see you in a couple of years when the technology is up to it :/
This is one of those wild ideas that sound crazygonuts on paper but are either impossible or won't work out in practice, most of the time both. Not that I mind or anything. It's not like there's a lot of other stuff to talk about in Gen. Ed. :)
 
hmmmm.... well what if I kinda made up like a really conveniate reason for there been fog, so you can actually only see about 500 meters, this means that outside of the 500 meters you would no need to be send any information. Packets are very basic up until you get to about 400/300 meters. I dunno

You also said about servers, how about making the game and getting sponcorship? Contact major companies in the beta stages and ask them, send them a compey of the game and see what they think, if they agree you put adverts for there products inside the game (citys do have big banners after all :D)

You also said about maybe in 2 years when technogegy is better, well tbh. It takes people doing something to advance, so why couldn't them be u?

lol, I am not sayign ye I am making a mod. I am just asking about:

1. if its possible
2. see how it could be done
3. see if i could try it, I would proberly fail. But its not about winning or making something kewl, at least I could say I tryed

It would take so much work that by the time you finished it HL3 would have already been released...
 
hehehe, thats actually a good point u made, because by the time it is finished. Then maybe there would be a server that could actually handle all the information sent a recived. Then it would proberly be one of the first massivily muliplayer games of its kinda :D
 
hmmmm. tbh I don't think this will see the light of day. It's possible, but you'd need the best of the best.
 
ye, I wasn't making this thread to start a mod. I was asking if its possible and see if anyone liked my idea. If it was and people liked it obviasly I might look into doing it. But its not. O well, will just to wait :P
 
I wouldn't bother even attempting this , a project like this should be attempted by pros.. I don't understand why people try and make the most complicated stuff.. Start with something simple, it's easier and more fun that way..

Well currently the MMORPG called Wish (which I'm beta testing) Uses servers that will handle upto 10,000 people....
 
Every MMORPG that I have ever seen uses server clusters. Each "server" is actually made up of a bunch of smaller servers that control little chunks of the world. There is not one giant server that handles all 10,000 people. This is where the trouble of making a Source MMORPG comes in. You would have to code in a way to have a huge seamless world that would automatically connect you to the next server when you cross into an adjacent zone. That would probably require more than just an SDK. You would need to license the Source engine and modify it heavily.
