Hey folks, I've had this problem for a while now and im not sure what to do. when im running around in half-life 2, I'll notice that my game lags and my fps drops a lot. Whats even stranger though is that it also does it when I am just standing still. I dont get what could be causing this. Is this because im connected all the time when playing half life, because when I play CS:Source, I notice that the same thing happens, a drop in fps BUT, sometimes my ping will shoot up high at the same time. Any clue???

I think it might help if we see some computer specs. No way for us to tell if it is supposed to act like that with your hardware or not.

if you have a virus scanner like pc-cillin it helps to turn it off before playing. Also if you have dial up internet things can get pretty slow.

I have noticed this a few times, I think it's only happened to me in the Nova Prospekt maps. All of a sudden my FPS will drop down to like 5 and the only way to fix it is to save and reload. But yeah, you should scan for viruses and spyware first, so you can rule those out. And turn off your antivirus when you play.

Half Life 2 works perfectly well on my laptop (Centrino 1.6Mhz, 512MB and 64MB Intel Extreme 2 graphics), however, CS:Source is unplayable, and Counter Strike:CZ won't even get past the loading screen. Go figure that?

Either you have Spyware:

Google "Spybot" and "Adaware"

or a virus:

Google Trendmicro "Housecall"

or something else:

format/re-install

Kill any background tasks that are unnecessary (as noted, Virus scanners are horrible).

Also, make sure your motherboard drivers and vid card drivers are installed. Your specs also should be way above the minimum requirements.

yeah tbh if your runnig minimum specs the game is nearly always unplayable even on the lowest graphics because u cant lower the number pf physics calculations it has to do

Do a reinstall and get hold of drive image and make an image of you c drive ( if u use a small partition liek i do for os )

and then next time your pc fudgers u can reinstall it back to new with the nearly up to dte drivers ( at that point) and a pc that you konw will do everything you need from the go and can be updated when you can be bothered!!

p.s. thats what i do!
