i have a question, how come when half life 2 was leaked last year all the people here were like "those ****ing ****tard ******s EEEEEEEE *spittle flying from mouth* they should die for leaking games those ****ing ****ers. i hope they serve life sentences in prison and get murdered after being raped EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE." but when halo 2 is leaked this year, everyone is so apathetic. hypocrites......

because your on a halflife2 forum? lol

I don't condome illegal activity of any game :|no matter what it is, the dev team are the ones that hurt more then the publishers.

There is a huge difference between the Halo 2 leak and the Half-Life 2 leak.

Not to mention that this is a Half-Life 2 forum. Hence the reason we talk about Half-Life 2 more than Halo 2. I can't believe I have to explain this to people.

Well for one, as someone pointed out, it was STOLEN. Big difference.

Also, the Source Code was stolen, not just the game...

Half-Life 2 wasn't "leaked"; it was stolen.
Thank you letters. I hate when people say it was leaked. Leaked means when the game is giving to someone outside valve and they put it on the net. This game was hacked into from the internet.

yea all that was required to get Halo 2 ot was someone just went into a backroom picked up the game and went home and made a CD image off it and send it off... there was a LOT of work to get the HalfLife2 Source code.. they literly hacked into Valve/Steam's system and stole it out and covered their tracks and did a lot more then that too.. that is a MUCH bigger federal crime then what the guy in Europe did for Halo 2

Half-life 2 had it's source code and whatever Valve completed by September 03 stolen.
As for Halo 2, someone took a copy created from the gold disc (french language PAL format to be exact) and distributed it through the p2p networks.
After a game has gone gold, there can not be a delay unless the gold master disc gets destroyed before production, which would push back the game a day or two at the most.

#1 Halo was leaked after it was gold...just like every other game in the last 5 years, so we don't really care

#2 Half life was a stolen alpha....

#3 Yeah I'll probably never play Halo 2. The first was great as console FPS's go...but by great I mean it was horrible if you compare it to PC shooters. I played the pc version...and frankly I haven't played a game that bad in some time. So boring. So probably a lot of the forum goes here couldn't care less about a Halo 2 leak.

look at your address bar. notice the part after www and before .net. ok

The halo 2 leak is relatively no big deal, most games get onto p2p before release, and if not it will on the day of release so doesn't matter. It will only affect sales, it will not make all the network code have to be rewritten because it reveals all its flaws.
The half-life 2 SOURCE CODE theft is HUGE. It meant that every line of code (rather than just the compiled game) was visible to all the hackers that would use it to steal CD keys, make multiplayer so hacked it will unplayble, and destory steam.
Source code thefts are a big deal, it runins everything. The Halo 2 gold copy leak is no big deal, it just means ppl can play for free, which happens for almost every game anyways. AND the Halo 2 one can only be played on chipped XBOXs so is even less significant.

Because the source code for hl2 was leaked.
Bingo. There is a huge difference between source code and compiled code. All of the security was revealed right there.

Otherwise I really would not have cared much. Checking out leaked alphas is almost like a tradition,. a little sneak peak into the future.. ever since the Quake 1 alpha so many years back.

I have never been to a Halo forum but can you tell me if they were as upset as we were when the Source code and pre-Alpha version were stolen? I doubt it.

What the hell is halo?
Hahahaha....
I thought Halo was quite good. Halo 2 looks good, as far as XBOX games go, but if it was made originally for the PC, and then ported to XBOX, instead of the other way around, it'd be simply awesome. Not as good as HL2, mind you, but still awesome. XBOX lacks the hardware required these days for up-to-date engines and graphics. I think it's only got a Pentium 3 equivalient?

ahhh...Quake 1..brings back the lovely memories

As someone on the forums said a long, long time ago:

"Halo's success: Show a caveman a flashlight"

Nothing can be more true. Halo's success was based on showing the console generation what a FPS is, but it was something we had all seen before, and nothing new or special.

1. half-life 2 is't leaked
2. halo 2 is
3. half-life 2 was stolen

Stolen source-code for PC games is far more serious than a leaked version of Halo 2.

Wait I never understood the source code stolen thing. I thought its the same thing as leaked, and that it shouldnt be delayed because someone else had the game? What exactly happened? Did all the years of work that Valve did get stolen and they had to start from the beggining again? Please someone explain this to me, I hate the search feature and I did not make a new thread so be thankful lol. But seriously, what happened?

I never heard much about the STALKER alpha either. Which surprised me. Then again, STALKER isnt too high on people's radars it seems.

The STALKER alpha is out there, but I hear it doesnt have much.

People on the bungie site were just glad to see and maybe play Halo2 sooner. If HL2 was (and probably will) leak into the internet when it's sent for production; can you say that you won't try and play it?

I know that 50% will buy the game when they hear about how good it is. 25% won't know how to get the leaked version working. 5% won't do it because of ethics.

Still. It's not like it's the same because computer related pirating spreads faster and farther. For one it's a console. two, they will have to burn the game or wait till release to rip it. Yadda yadda yadda...I am so bored I willl write about anything.

My socks are dirty. Don't you hate that? I think I need to do a load with bleach.

ok, i get it now. when something you don't care about is stolen it doesn't matter. but when something you DO care about is stolen, all game piraters should go to hell and game pirating is the evilest thing in the world.

when hl2 was leaked, i don't remember people saying omg the people that stole hl2 should die and all other game piraters are cool with me. everyone was talking about how ALL game piraters were the devil incarnate so shut up because you seem to have missed my point

DrunkPanda, the difference was that when HL2 was stolen, not only was the game ripped directly off of VALVE's computers, the game SOURCE code was also stolen (which, to any entrepenuring company, is worth thousands of $$$). No one is saying, "Well, Halo2 can get stolen... oh well." We're just saying that HL2 was a bigger theft than Halo 2 was. Every game gets leaked before release. Hell, Half-Life 2 will be leaked before it's released more than likely. You'll probably see a couple posts on this board about "HL2 leaked now, oh noes!" when it happens, but really most of us think that ALL warez is bad. People are just remarking how HL2 source code being stolen a year in advance along with the precious source code was terrible because A) It opened the game the cheaters before it was even released B) Valve could end up losing cash and seeing games using a mysteriously almost exactly the same engine being used in a game that they never sold the Source engine rights to.

Halo 2 source code was not stolen. Bungie and MS still have their hot little hands gripping it without any old ass taking a looksee at it.

Oh for god sakes read the other replies in here before you start spouting off crap, that was not the only argument. Besides, can you tell me if Halo 2 fans were as upset as we were about when the HL2 code and game were stolen? You still havn't answered that one.

Er.
I think it's because it's Half Life 2. You know, the thing that people care about here.

Who cares about Halo, again? I just hate consoles, so excuse my apathy.

Heh, it's funny how some people can just ignore what others say if it doesn't support their own ideas. Way to go, DrunkenPanda.

Theft != Leak.
Game != Source code

Get it now? Sorry for being so hostile, but some people just... oh forget it.

I think he's referring to programming language when he does the "!=" Basically it means "does not equal."

Exactly, though I didn't know it had something to do with programming. I thought it was just the opposite of "=" in general, stupid me. Thanks for clearing it up. :)

I admit leakers sure do dent developers. But to be honest, I have all my consoles chipped and I play leaked games.
I also buy ALL the games I normally would anyway.

I have completed Halo 2, and also have it pre-ordered, and will still buy the final product.
I play leaked games cos i can't be pissed waiting months for a european release. Pisses me off

Admittedly not everyone is like me, some will just buy a console get it chipped and leech, leech, leech, and not give anything back.

Not to mention having a chipped xbox is absolutely wonderful. Mine is chipped with a 120gb hard drive fitted, it's a mobile media centre that streams files from any machine in my home network, flawlessly.
