Is there any indication on approximately how long the single-player portion of Half-Life 2 will be? Longer or shorter than Half-Life 1? I did a forum search and couldn't find any conclusive answers.

I think it'd be about 25-35 hours long, depending on how good you are :cheese:

don't think it's ever been addressed.

im guessing around 10-15 hours tops. this seems to be average for FPS.

gabe has said the game is longer than the first, just look in the valve information thread.

I reckon 20 if you're gonna look through it all, find all the traps etc.

35 hours? lol.... thats about three times as much as HL1... NO WAY!

gabe stated that it would be roughly the same length of half-life.

what are some of you talking about? It probably did take me about 30 hours to beat Half-Life the first time. Gabe said in the info thread that it'd be 30-35 hours I think, about the same as HL1.

Yeah Gabe did say it would be approx 35 hours, look at Planet Half-Life site. Was it 6 hours a chapter?, correct me if I'm wrong..

Thats based on the average PC user. Im estimating 15 to 20 hours, which is still longer than a lot of games *cough*MOHAA 3 hours*cough*

I want a link, cause im having a very hard time believing that a FPS could have 30+hrs of gameplay.

unless of course, you are lost and walking around for 15hrs. :)

maybe i'm basing my views on amount of time it took when I was playing it through again... I appologise

"We also know that the game will be divided into 12 chapters, split into smaller episodes just like the original Half-Life. Each chapter should take 3 to 4 hours to play through, so in theory Half-Life 2 should be even longer than the original."

This is off the Planet Half-life site...

Heh, that adds up to like 36-48 hours of gameplay. :D

I think he's overestimating how long it will take for someone to play through these games though. I'd wager on 20+ garrenteed, with a buffer zone of 10-15 more...

Have you played the original HL? If you haven't I'd recommend picking it up before HL2 comes out, even if it is 5 years old. HL1 was a long friggin' game. I think I've played through to the end about 3-5 times and even the later times had to have taken somewhere between 16-20 hours. It's a LONG game, and it doesn't really get repetitive because the environments change a lot and it feels like your on some type of journey. lol

Edit: Yea, it'll have to take at least 20 hours (the first time) I'd imagine if they're claiming that its at least as long as HL1.

I will probably take 40 hours because I will be playing with and exploring the enviroment. Its going to be a lot bigger.

Guide!?!?! For HL2?!?! That's blasphemous! The only thing I think that might at all need the use of a guide/walkthrugh woud be how to kill a boss that you just can't determine it's weakness, but even then... Guides suck.

That's what I wanted to hear. 35 hours. That is huge!

I hope there isn't much backtracking. Having more than one path/option is fine, but backtracking for the sake of backtracking is annoying.

jesus....AVERAGE GAME TIME IS 36 HOURS. If it was as long as hl1 it would be CRAP. Hl1 was 6 hours long for me. Probably 7-10 for most other people.

I cant believe you people think hl1 was long....if that game took you more than 10 hours dont even bother playing hl2.

gabe acually said 20hrs. i thought he said 40hrs but hay i may be wrong but i did hear him say a number. i think it was 20-40. so lets say 20

not really...he said 36 hours........PERIOD. Thats the freaking estimate. Give or take a few hours for some people....he never said 20 hours, he never said 40 hours, he never said same as hl1, he never said shorter than hl1.

no it was 40hrs! gabe said 3-4 hrs on each level (12-13 levels i think)

but it will be like hl where a title comes up saying the name of the level.

so 12x3 or 12x4 ppl.

you do the math! ;)

36hrs-48hrs for those who needed help ;) j/k.

so it will take a long time.

but also think about it. a game with fantastic graphics, detail to level, phsics and gr8 A.I...WITH around 40hrs play that is fantastic!

also when they say 38-40hrs of playing they mean if you know what to do the whole way through! well it will be new to us, and we will want to explore, play with and enjoy the game so add more hours!

it will take around the same time or more then HL1

6 hours?
How in the hell did you pull that off first time?
They only way I can figure that is if you just run'n gun the entire time. I don't think I could even pull that off now.

dude...the point is he SAID 36. So thats all you need to know...no debate about it.

very true!

if ppl are thinking "36hrs pffffft not long" well trust me it is. cause they mean 36hours to know EXACTLY what to do from start to finish, with no stops of looking and having experiments with A.I)

Come to my hose, play it through in 6 hours and win a million! (jk i dont have a million)

Not necessarily, I expect it more likely means not knowing exactly what to do and spending some of the 36 hours looking for stuff, etc.. It's probably an accurate play time estimate for the average person, not for the hardcore gamer trying to fly through the game. Just my opinion.

dude... bullshit, even now if i rush it i will be done by 10 hours...

no way you did accomplish the game in 6 hours on the first time

I am playing HL right now and I see it as almost impossible to beat it in 6 hours. Without cheats, just you and the gun. Do you know what we are talking here?

Unforseen Consequences
Office Complex
We've got Hostiles
Blast Pit
Power Up
On a Rail
Apprehension
Residue Processing
Questionable Ethics
Surface Tension
Forget about Freeman
Lambda Core
Gonarch's Lair
Interloper

Those are all big chapters will plenty of combat the ones I haven't mentioned either only have one map or are like the intro. See below:

Black Mesa Inbound
Xen
Nihilanth
Conlusion

Even if you were able to beat each chapter of the first ones in under a hour thats is still 14 hours. The only way I could possibly seeing someone beat the game in 6 hours is if they ran through the whole game without killing a thing except for the "boss" guys.

While I am not saying your lieing, 6 hours will most certainly not be the normal if HL2 is anywhere close to HL.

Props on the beating the game in 6 hours though. I certainly couldn't do that.

Guys, there are X number of levels in the game every level Gabe stated will take 3.5-4 hours to complete and that is without exploring the universe of the game. Moreover, for poeple who wants to enjoy the engine (4 hours for every level plus extra two hours of exploring the engine power and that is = to 6 hours for a level).

I like long games.

eww i will not come to your hose, sicko!

Hmmm... about 36 hours? Ok. Not as long as, say, a Final Fantasy game, but longer than the average FPS. That just means that I'll more time to savor the game and take it all in for the first time. After that, it play through with cheats :)

Sorry for flame, but that last sentence must be the most idiotic I've ever heard! Myself when I play I wanna explore etc, and that adds alot of extra hours compared to playing just going to goal! (seen the movie where this dude finnish Quake1 in about 12 mins?)

First time experience cant be saved! (meaning that if you "go to goal" and then decides to explore, it wont be the same, although the new explored areas are.. well, first time you beeing there.. :) )
