Easily one of the best, looks both good and realistic.

Blood

For such a old game it still has quite a impressive looking fire, looked even better back when it was first released.

Unreal 2: The Awakening

Best flamethrower ever.

Post yours. :E

This certainly is an interesting contest...

I agree with RE4 though. Hl2's was great too on high-settings, if I recall correctly...

RtCW. Definitely.

I played it first at a LAN party and really struggled to use any weapons. (After winning on UT2k4, this was a little embarassing.) So one of my mates suggested the flamethrower. I was suddenly back at the top of the leaderboard, laughing maniacally as I set both enemies and friends alight with my flame stick of doom. Didn't help that I was as high as heck.

But yeah, long story short. RtCW flamethrower roolz.

Haven't played RE4, so I'd have to go with RTCW... Incredibly sexy flamethrower.

Goldeneye was always my favorite... it expanded like a real explosion would with fire just reaching for you :)

Yesss, I loved that effect, it's a damn shame no games on the PC have ever really done it. D:

Oblivion has nice fire. I'll take a SS.

Looks better in game, but you get the idea.

HL2 fire looks good, until you look at it from above..

And according to Wikipedia, the flamethrower of the Pyro in the TF2 trailer was not pre-rendered but a showcasing of the new softparticle system in the next iteration of Source. If it is, then wow.

Slightly off topic, however I really love the flame thrower as a weapon. It's sorely underused in games.

yeh its a good weapon, ive only seen it used well in RTCW & Serious Sam

May not be the best looking fire, but it was damn fun lighting those mothers on fire.

I think FEAR has the best looking fire. It's probably the most realistic looking. Sin : E has good fire too.

Ironically, I think HL2 has poor fire. It's just an animated sprite. It really looks bad when you stare at it from up high. It's all stretched and flat. It looks good in SS and when you don't move around it too much, but it's really not that good compared to other games. Does it's job though.

Half-life 2 has fantastic fire, until you look at it from above.

I am the only one who think the fire of FEAR looked crappy?

or cuz my PC suck?

True, looks too static. I love Resident Evil 4's fire, especially when you get the infinite launcher and just start blasting the shit out of any target you can find.

You are not alone.

Another vote for RTCW here. I used to spend happy hours roasting people in the vents to the docs room on Beach. They never learnt :)

Refresh my memory, was RTCW's fire volumetric? As in, that it moved around corners and shaped itself to the shape of the room/vent?

It didn't go round corners, but would fill the vent if you were shooting down it and kind of billow out at the end.

I think part of the reason RE4's fire looks so great is that the controls don't allow you to strafe round it, look at it from above, etc.
In fact, you'd be amazed how much that game makes use of sprites for background detail... just try messing with the camera angle in a heavily wooded area and you'll notice it.

Anyway, the fire looks great... I once played RE4 on a mate's large flatscreen, which had a super brightness and darkness contrast, and I got mesmerised by a flaming barrel for about five minutes.

I think I remember Max Payne 2 having really good fire.

Oh yeah, and Goldeneye was awesome. The explosion effects were really cool.

the fire of FEAR looked like a floating paper of static flame

Max Payne 2 has amazing fire. I don't recall if it's quite on the level of HL2 or RTCW, but it's still mighty good.

I actually always hated the way Source did fire, never looked like anything more than a sprite. Max Payne 2 had some impressive effects for it's time.

Max Payne 2 was far ahead of it's time in terms of fire effects.

Far-Cry didn't do so bad either:

love the fire effects in HGL

Well it is a game about Hell in London - the fire should hold the game up... :p

I remember thinking to myself that Resident Evil 4 on the gamecube had the best fire I'd ever seen.

I always thought black and white 1 had some nice fire, but now that I play it again I realize its not so good.

it's one of my most anticipated games, they really need some better press - hype machine will probably start in a a few months give or take.
