A friend of mine doesn't play much / any computer or console games, but ever since she started reading Ctrl-Alt-Delete (the webcomic) she's felt like playing computer games.
I'm not too sure if she'd want to play many First Person Shooters, bit too much gore, but i'm sure to lend her Half Life just to see.
What RPGs or RTS would you guys suggest would be good games to start someone into gaming?

Here's the list at the moment:
Half Life (DoD + CS maybe?)
Warcraft 2 and 3
Starcraft
Arcanum
Fallout
Age of Empires 2
Black and White.

Not sure what else...

*Also i've reached the good old 500! *

Grim Fandando and The Longest Journey as well.

Best adventure games out there. They're not RPG's or RTS's but they are still kickass games.

Planescape Torment (Best rpg ever!)
Baldurs Gate series
Fallout series

Command and Conquer series, bar none.

Starcraft is good. The god of all games.

anyway, most people don't start gaming with fpses very well.

I don't think Fallout is a good choice to give to a newbie gamer. For a start it has tons of bugs that can require some perseverance to work around, also the subject matter and gameplay might turn her off(it can be quite difficult).

I'd stick with classic RPGs, maybe even an MMORPG which girls seem to love or like has already been said, Adventure games like the Monkey Island series or Grim Fandango. I'd stay clear of games like CS & DoD also.

Grim Fandango is a great suggestion here. My sister used to play it all the time until she finished it. Its good because its easy to control and you can quickly pick up the nature of the game and what there is to do.

EDIT: Thinking about it has made me really wanna play it. Totally gonna install this when I get home.

Caesar III - RTS - there are later games in this series, but they all play exactly the same, like Pharoah and Emperor.
Thief: Deadly Shadows - FPS, not much gore, just sneaking.
GTA: SA and Guild Wars might be cool for her to try too.

Broken Sword, Grim Fandango and Escape From Monkey Island are all brilliant games. :D

Someone's gonna lynch me, but: The Sims. Its a real gateway drug.

I'd first figure out what she prefers playing (action, RTS, console, computer, etc). And I wouldn't rule out the FPS, my girlfriend is a bloodthirsty maniac in HL2.

I was thinking something more along the lines of Neverwinter Nights or Dungeon Siege, something that's easy to just pick up and play.

if u want him to start on fps i seriously advise that he plays q3 arena then move on to hl1 dm and cs.

World of Warcraft.
serious
try it. (my GF likes it, and she usually hates video games... although she sucks at mouse navigation atm... good in battles against pve when she is facing them lol)
she plays a human mage and actually has a handle on how to use her spells well already (1 day of playing), she frost novas and steps back to cast. sheeps adds and frostbolts things far away, arcane missiles targets that are attacking me.
I was impressed.

Start her off with good old Mario Bros.
Then work it up to some Tanks, then bring the gaming up a notch by going to Starcraft or Half-Life.
Edge in Fallout somewhere.
Well, you might just want to do some Starcraft and Half-Life, skip the classic Tanks and Mario Bros.
People get edgy when being held back from games.

starcraft, half-life, fallout, dawn of war

Actually, just let her choose, just remind her that graphics doesn't necessarly mean a great game. Though it is like that a lot. Also, make some suggestions to her.
She might have more interest in RPG then FPS, you never know.

If you are including non-PC games, start her on a DS. Hell, even my mum can play that with a fair degree of skill and still enjoy herself. Although my mum can also play GTA. She enjoys the noises when you run people over. :rolling:

SOLDAT OMG

got it this morning and I am so hooked

Soldat gets boring after a bit.
Guess it isn't challenging enough.

I died five times in a row then quit the first time I played Soldat and I havent played it since.

i dunno what kinda games your friend would like, but i'd say get Mafia. Its the best game evar!

oh, but it is incredibly hard...

Hmm... my friend only got into gaming via Maple Story, which i'm not sure what it actually is but it's some kind of weird-ass Ragnarok Spinoff, or something. Same style. Korean. If numbers browses this forum, maybe he can tell me. Or any of you guys - of course.

Has anyone said 'I'd hit it' yet?

We haven't even seen a picture of her yet.

Hell, for all we know, she might be one of those chicks with a moustache, or a crater face!

Not saying that she's not a good friend or anything, but...

Deus Ex(It is an FPS, sorry) but NOT THE SEQUIL!
GTA:SA
The Diskworld and Monkey Island games games and Grim Fandango.

I've found women gamers tend to prefer the creative side to things. I'd recommend RPG games (not the Japanese-style turn-based ones, though) like Neverwinter Nights. "The Sims 2", "Simcity", and similar games are likely to peak her interest. If you're going to introduce her to strategy games, its probably best to pick one that has an extensive economic side to things, and even better, one that can be won without fighting.

Played Maple Story while my PC was down and using my old one, BF2 took 5mins to load a map :( was a 2D Side Scrolling MMORPG, meh to say the least, haven't looked back at it since got my good PC back

You must mean the Civilization series.
