I just beat RE4 yesterday, and Im looking for a game with a good in depth story. Theres several I am thinking about: Metroid prime 2, KOTOR I or II, or tales of symphonia. I heard KOTOR II's ending sucks, and tos is very repititive. Which one do you recomend, or/and list any others you recomend?

Planescape: Torment, if you don't mind a lot of reading, or a story that perhaps eclipses the gameplay at times.

Ill check that out.

Also I have played and beaten all of the silent hill games exept for 4, I didnt like 3 that much but I loved 2. Is 4 any good?

Top man :)

Easily the most welll written video game I've played - in this respect nothing get else close.

I'd go for Metroid Prime over no. 2 first - neither are particulalry story based (yet contain enough to give a sense of purpose), they're 'explore-em-ups'. Metroid is all about the experience of being on a wondefully well designed and realised alien planet.

Symphonia has more story than you could shake a stick at - and deals with many issues. It's also handled in a typically Japanese way, and as such has a very old skool feel abouty it. Very cute and very epic :)

The style of Symphonia may not be to your liking - so i'd go for Metroid Prime. Just don't expect a fps filled with action. It's one to take your time over, and soak in the sights/atmosphere/music. One of the best games I've played this generation (and leads nicely on to the excellent sequal - which isn't quite as good imo)

Haven't played KOTOR 2, but enjoyed the first.

What he said.

Apparently its the best RPG ever made, and the most underrated and underappreciated.

It is one of them - cetainly for the pc.

You can spend hours wandering around and talking to people - and the dialogue is so good (we're not talking cheesey MGS here - we're talking really good)

It's such a shame that this game got little recognition by the public, as it really is one of the best around. (Fired it up a few months ago - it's looking a little old now, but still packs a punch)

kotor 1 's story is by far the best i've ever seen (or read, bar lotr).

it includes friendship, betrayal, a hint of love, a shocking twist, an awesome climax, and a choice of good or evil

i haven't played the evil version yet... i'm too nice :D

Baldurs Gate 2 :)
Planescape
Kotor series (not played 2)
FF7.
WarCraft 3
Dues Ex

All just amazing story driven games.

[FF refers to Final Fantasy. in roman numerals]
I have played so many games, yet very few had a good story.

here's the memorable ones - listed in order:

also note, these are on my list of my favorite games of all time.

Shenmue I & II

FFIII

FFX

anyone have any good links for this planescape torment ? it's sound really good ..

edit: read a bit about it on gamespot. just how similar is it to baldurs gate ? i <3 baldurs gate [i own 2 & and the expansion and am trying to find the first :(].

Beyond Good and Evil

freaking awesome game. one of my favorite storylines in a game.

SYSTEM SHOCK TWO!
Ground Control II has a rather good story. So does Thief: Deadly Shadows.

OPERATION FLASHPOINT!

The story's pretty good, but the individual mission stories and the story you end up forming all by yourself are even better, because they're yours. In one of the early missions my entire squad was massacred because the CO ordered us to charge. Since that day I had a terrible loathing of officers, so when I became one I vowed not to let any of my people die. Then when three men died on my first mission...I was kicking myself. After that, I managed to conserved my squad and got medals and stuff! :D

The story that i and my friend is writing is going to be good.

Deus Ex
Deus Ex 2
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Unreal 2
Metal Gear Solid
Legacy Of Kain Soul Reaver

Starcraft and Starcraft:Brood War.
One of the most deep sci-fi games ever. The background is insanley deep aswell.

Once you play the secret mission in brood war... heh.. It really gets intresting ecspecially if you know the background history of starcraft.

MGS2. Hands down the best story I have ever come across.

Half-Life 1&2
Deus Ex
Grim Fandango
Most LucasArts adventure games, now I come to think of it.

Err, apart from the interesting spellings... you have your game right there, thread over.

I was going to say Far Cry, but I don't think that storyline qualifies as great.
Maybe try Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Medal of Honour?

You are a genius sir.

Deus Ex, yeah that was great.
Haven't played Deus Ex 2 (well played first level) but my computer doesn't seem to run it very well (despite being OK for HL2 and Doom3). So I'm waiting for a new comp for that.

Grim Fandango, LOVED IT. I want to visit Rubacava some day!

Agree with Icarusintel, those Lucasart games are classic. Don't forget Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade!
Just noticed your sig, someone quoted me in their sig! :D

Every game posted so fas has certainly an interesting story, but comparing them to mgs and mgs2 is like comparing, Hamlet to little red riding hood. the mgs games are the pinnacle of story telling.

It pleases me greatly that Planescape: Torment has been mentioned multiple times.

Ive already played and beaten all of the mgs games, and yes I loved them.

Warbie I herd tos gameplay gets very repitive, towards the middle of the game is this true?

I also have played starcraft and the expansion and beat them, I loved the story line and cant wait for the next one. I always wanted to try warcraft, but I didnt want to play the old graphics of 1, and I felt I wouldnt get the whole story just skipping to 3.

Also I have herd hundreds of people tell me how good FF7 is, I would love to play it. However the graphics are so old at this point it does bother me. I dont know why they dont remake it, for the newer systems.

Does dues ex 1 have a really good story line, or is it just a good game overall? I noticed someone said farcry, and imo that game did not have a good story to it.

Just a few :)

In terms of story telling and quality of writting Planescape Torment is really on a different level to any other video game. Many have Mentioned FF, Deus Ex, Grim Fandango, MGS etc etc - and all are good story driven experiences. None hold a candle to Planescape tho. Not even close.

Do you have a link that explains the basic story line (no spoilers), of Planescape: Torment?

I didn't really find it got too repetitive. Certainly some bits weren't as exciting as others. The problem with TOS is also its greatest strength - it's massive, truly epic. If you take your time you could easily spend a good 100 hours playing Symphonia.

If you're a fan of Japanese style RPGs you'll love this :) It's worth checking out even if you're not (maybe rent first?)

In short - you wake up in a morgue, you're 'dead' - covered in scars and all stiched together. You have no memory, and your only companion (at the start) is a floating skull with an annoying sense of humour.

The setting is Baldurs Gate on a bad trip, dark fantasy. Who am i? what happened? It's the dialogue that really shines in this game, though - there is alot of reading involved, and it's all top quality.

Planescape will always be one of my fave games.

Ill check both out. My problem is even though I love these games, once I start the game I consume all my time with them. I want to finish the story once I start, asap. Which midterms are next week, so I think Im going to wait before starting to play a 100hr game lol.

Did someone say hundred hour game??? that could only be one very frustrating, but still fun, game. FFX the x stands for ten w00t

Planescape: Torment is a crap game... I played it after seeing forum-people say it's good like they are here, but it's not... I can only stand wandering aimlessly through a town for so long before I start to foam at the mouth because I don't really know what to do, but when I do know what I want to do MAYBE I can't do it because it's too hard. It sucks, and the skull thing needs to stop calling me 'chief'... goddam bastard.

every silent hill game has an AMAZING story line.....the first one being the hardest to follow

theres also a LOT of symbolism if your willing to chase up a lot of what it all means

the closest thing though that has come to intruiging me as much as the silent hill series though is half-life 2 and being as how your on a half-life 2 forum, i'm presuming you've played it

edit: oh you might want to try giving clive barkers undying a try aswell....that also has a good story being as how it was written by a novelist

Nobody's said Broken Sword yet, the Knights Templar and all that, good stuff.

Also the Thief series.

And... Gran Turismo 2... the bad guy dies in the end.

How do I play this secret mission?
Well it shows you what Duran is up to. If you know your history starcraft manual history..you will come up with the most probable answer of who or..what he is.

You have to play the 2nd to the last mission in broodwar.(Zerg Campaign)
On this mission you can use any cheat but auto win.
You have to beat it with at least 5 minutes on the clock.

You play as zeratual looking for artanis and he goes to a planet with alot of energy. It's pretty much a huge Mcing mission. Gotta love mcing.

I always wanted to try warcraft, but I didnt want to play the old graphics of 1, and I felt I wouldnt get the whole story just skipping to 3.
Actually you can catch onto Wc3's pretty easy.
Pretty much it's about a prophet saving the Orc species by opening up a portal to another world(Our World).
In the Human campaign humans win.
In the orc campaign they win.
But in Warcraft mythology the Orcs crushed the humans.

Not familiar with Wc2's but it's more just battles between them as far as my understanding goes.

I never played attention to the Wc3 Storyline 100%
But the TFT storyline I did understand.. I did love it.
