List games (singleplayer) with the best storyline you have played over the past 2 years.

Sadly the last few games I played that had a good storyline were:

Zelda: twilight princess
Jade Empire
Resident evil 4

Knights of the Old Republic.
KoTOR 2 (Ending was gay though.)
Shadow of The Colossus (shut up.)
What else.. ahh... thats it, I guess. If I think of any more I'll put them on.
First post ftw.

RE4? lol.

KOTOR series
Max Payne series
MGS series
Xenosaga series
Deus Ex series
Planescape: Torment

Can I suggest that we not make another thread full of lists? That's boring. List one or two and explain why you liked them, then maybe we can get an actual discussion going for once. :) Remember that we have spoiler tags reinstated, so liberal use of those would be welcome.

For example

The Darkness
I remember the part early on where you spend time with Jenny in her apartment watching TV. I got bored fairly quickly and left her on the couch alone so I could go kill more stuff and get on with the plot. At the time I was wondering why they would include such a dull side-feature in an awesome shooting game.

Then when Jenny got killed and Jackie slumps down onto his knees, I felt like a complete dick for not spending enough time with her. :p I really liked how the game was this awesome adrenaline-soaked shooter, but running around shooting and killing everything in sight was pretty much what The Darkness wanted and all it lead to was the death of your character.

Psychonauts
Mafia
The Homeworld series, particularly 1 & Cataclysm, less so 2. I'd like to stress this, however, as I rarely see Homeworld mentioned on these lists. The story in 1 & Cataclysm is superb and nicely presented. 2 is less so, but still good.

Agreed. Being forced to watch it all happen without any way to prevent it was really hard.

Max Payne
Half-Life series
Command and Conquer: Red Alert series
Rainbow Six (first one)

Hmm .. off the top of my head:

Resident Evil series
Max Payne 1&2
Half-Life series
Final Fantasy series

In a bit of a hurry but they're just a few that spring to mind, i'll post some more when I can remember them :p

Planescape always springs to mind in threads like this. Wonderfully well written.

I'd pay full price for remakes of Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Planescape Torment. Nothing would have to change gameplay wise, just higher res and a few touches to the art work.

Deus Ex
Neocron
Metal Gear Solid

Those are the big three for me I think.

DEUS EX DEUS EX DEUS EX DEUS EX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Metal Gear Solid Series
Half-Life Series
Resident Evil Series
Still Life
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Series
Twisted Metal: Black

Planescape: Torment gets...thirded? here by me. Such an awesome concept, melding lots of little philosophical strings together with a great linear-dressed-as-non-linear game world.

That hack Ebert recently claimed that the reason games can't be art is because they require too much user input and have too much potential for variations in the experience, so that the player doesn't end up with a single unified vision. Anyone who thinks that should have a look at Planescape, in which you have a lot of scope to shape your own character (at least in terms of personality), but in which you're led ultimately to more or less the same conclusion and made to feel the same thing (with subtle variations depending on your conduct).

Props also to HL2, which has an awesome story, but the awesomeness is more to do with the backstory of what's happened to the world than with the events that actually happen in the game.

Seconded. The plot might only be revealed at the climax, but I still thought it to be pretty damn cool. What did you end up thinking of Ico btw? Personally I think it has a great little story too, although there's even less denouement than in SotC.

I havn't gotten around to playing it yet.
I've been on vacation.. Didn't take my PS2 with me.

Okay, let's talk about KotOR's story! :D

I liked the part at the end of the light side path when I got to do Bastila..

I like to dream, don't I? (Bastila: Romance side quest doesn't count.. >: |)

I said it once, and I'll say it again:

Remember, that was back in the early 90's when FPS story lines were confined to "UAC opens portal to hell, kill the demons!"

Halo
Halo 2
Soon to be Halo 3

I smiled when I saw that :))). Not because I found it funny, I like Halo, but because of the responses I knew were coming.

Agreed. Being forced to watch it all happen without any way to prevent it was really hard.

Eh. It was a sad bit, but as great as The Darkness and it's plot is, I don't really "care" much for its stuff.

I suppose the only one I know that maybe a number of people haven't played is Deus Ex. That game's story is fricking fantastic. I'm glad I made the super cheap Steam purchase.

Have you played KOTOR II? It's practically the spiritual successor to Planescape.

Farenheit.

The story was great for most of the game. It got really ****ing weird toward the end, though.

I loved near the end of KOTOR 2 when you go light side and you finally have a talk with the jedi masters. Dear god, I went WTF. That is sooo wrong.

Oh man, that was a good game. I didn't like some of Lucas's scenes too much, especially that flashback scene.

You what?!

It's a pretty decent game, not as good as the original (imo anyways) and certainly not close to being in the same league as Planescape.

It's written and developed by the same guys. KOTOR II's plot > KOTOR I. Though, I will say KOTOR I has better developed NPCs. But Obsidian had to cut a lot of content to get it released for the holiday season (LucasArts demand).

I hope they finish up that mod soon.
Note: Get Kotor2 for the PC.

There are some games with good storylines that I like. But the best are absolutely Starcraft and Deus Ex. Especially Deus Ex.

Farenheit had a sex scene complete with pixelated boobs. Nothing beats that.

Ah MollBooth Tillie, the censors got to you.

LUSE.
