UNION SQUARE (WABC) -- Part of New York City became an "urban jungle" -- as a swarm of bees descended on the busy Union Square Park area. The bees seemed to have their stingers set on one business at 107 East 14th Street.

The bees seemed to have their stingers set on one business at 107 East 14th Street.

You could definitely say East 14th Street was "abuzz" this Memorial Day weekend -- but certainly not in the usual way

"When I got here, there was already like a thousand bees in there...then they came out...there were more...they were like -- in a pack," said bee watcher Jay Lorenzo.

Thousands of bees -- in a hive -- in a building between 4th Avenue and Irving Place -- and it was no joke to the employees here at GameStop. They were trapped inside their store. The sign in the window said, "temporarily closed, due to bee infestation."

"There's a hive...inside the walls...leading upward...they say somebody's on the way, but they're taking a long time to get here," bee watcher Herman Leath said.

In fact, it took two hours to get some help...and that was only after Eyewitness News called the police department...who said, call the fire department...who said, call 9-1-1...who said, call 3-1-1..who said, call the mayor's office.

In the meantime, a Good Samaritan -- tried to remove the immediate hazard out on the sidewalk. He lured about a thousand bees into a bag -- which was later placed inside a box. But pedestrians were still at risk, and the bees continued to filter out of the building.

Eyewitness News: "What were people doing when you approached this??"
Good Samaritan, Edward Albers: "I don't know...they were laughing...some of 'em..."
Eyewitness News: "Was anyone stung??"
Albers: "Not yet..."

And finally, at around 4 p.m. the NYPD's bee specialist arrived -- but removing the hive was no easy task...

"I'm probably gonna be relying on scent...the queen bee's scent...it could take a half hour&an hour...two hours...I don't know," NYPD bee expert Tony Planakis said.

And so the spectacle continued.

"It's just something I've never seen before...this is Manhattan, New York...I guess you could see anything," bee watcher Leath said.

I blame violent video games.

'They were like....in a pack'

A pack....oh how I love yanks.

Haha 'The NYPD's bee specialist', wow, bet he uses that to get chicks in a bar. What a convo starter...

'WHat to do you do for a living?'
'Im a bee specialist for the NYPD'
'Ahaha I love a guy with a sense of humour, but seriously, what do you do for a living'

*checks the date*
Wierd, sounds like an April Fool's story.

its all a publicity stunt. walmart just declared they're going to sell used games and they got scareded

Yeah, you're right. Those are hired bees.

as long it's only foreign nationals ,I couldn't really bother.

There certainly were a lot of ellipses and hyphens in that story.

"they were like -- in a pack," said bee watcher Jay Lorenzo.

Good to know the Bee Watchers still watch over us.

But who Watches the BeeWatchers?

I blame violent video games.
Bioshock is the filth that must be banned. And what about that really ridiculous boss from Metal Gear Solid 3?*. Also, I think I saw bee-supremacist literature in the Green Hill Zone, but its been a while since I took a run through it.

* "That really ridiculous boss from Metal Gear Solid x" is officially the single most vague formulation possible in the English language.

What are you so bugged about?

Is it beecause Sarah Pollen was almost our Vice President? Or did you just not orgasm insex?

ironically, the bees were removed by men wearing yellow jackets.

eh, it's almost 4 am...i tried.

<3 bees

Unless you are allergic, an irrational fear of bees is irrational. Just bee cool and they won't bug you. They've got better things to do.

proportionally, their stingers are like swords...if i was tiny i might be hesitant to be around them.

But im huge and afraid of nothing. (except colorful spiders)

The only time you need to watch your step is if they bump into your head. That's just a warning. They are trying to tell you that you are getting too close to their nest. I found that fascinating.

Can't seem to find a source for that right now, it's kinda pissing me off.
