I've been thinking about getting the m15x, but probably will change my mind for m11x for more portability.

I have a budget about $1600.

What would you recommend?

I would not recommend getting a gaming laptop in the least. For $1600 you can make an extreme-high-end desktop.

Right now you think you want to 'game on the go' but there are really few openings for such a thing in everyday life. Buy a cheaper laptop, use it for office-work, and get a desktop for gaming. It's hella more worth it.

^True, dat.

You rarely get the time (or a stable surface) to game on when on the go. You're asking for trouble if you try playing games on trains or whatever.

I'd recommend a netbook and a good selection of Indie games. Save the rest for a top of the line PC/console, whatever floats your boat.

I don't need desktop. I already have a gaming/multimedia desktop. What I need is a netbook/notebook that is suitable for gaming.

You're wasting money then, bro.

In practice it sounds a great idea and there is probably nothing we can say to make you see otherwise, you'll only realise when you've bought it and gamed on it a few times. We've all done it, I've definitely done it.

Netbook? Gaming on an atom CPU, that's quite a push!

It becomes pretty dead obvious from simple experimentation. I bought a simple cheap laptop for college and it was capable of playing CS 1.6 at least; needless to say despite how much I like CS, there's just no freaking point when what I use the laptop for is goddamn college. I play games on the desktop. Separate purposes, no need for 'on the go gaming.' Then again I enjoy playing on a surround sound, fully spacious, large screen. It's like an insult to real gaming but whatever floats your boat, at the expense of your wallet.

Anyways, if you have to play Crysis on the go or something, I believe you have to get an Alienware, Dell, or this place: http://www.xoticpc.com/

Ask here for good responses.

In my experience, Sager/Clevo make excellent gaming laptops. Deathmaster's link contains several Sagers, but I'm out of the loop and behind the times on what performs well. Still, the Sager I bought from http://www.powernotebooks.com/ in mid 2008 now plays GTA4 on pretty decent settings.

The battery life on those are going to be terrible. If you are going to be somewhere where you can't charge, you won't be playing very long.

Hmmm...
Macbook pro?

Just leave the serious gaming to desktops. I doubt that any laptop can come close to the performance on a desktop.

You could always just save the moneyand buy something useful.

I've been gaming on a laptop for 3 years, it's a pain in the ass and I never use it anywhere other than home!

At the time I did need a laptop (to take on courses / trips out of the office etc) so i thought i'd get a Dell laptop with a dedicated Video card. I'm still playing TF2 on low settings at 26fps now dammit.

And the heat...oh god the heat...ever tried gaming on the sun? I feel like I have. 10 mins of L4D2 gets me to 80 degrees.

Oh god I can't wait for my desktop.

Not a bad idea really. Steam for Mac comes out in a little over a week and Starcraft 2 will have a simultaneous PC/Mac release. That should keep you busy for a while. And if need be you always do Bootcamp or something like that. The new Macbook Pro 13" with better processor and maybe some extra RAM should be right in your price bracket.

Advice from a gaming laptop owner: don't get one. Eventually, no matter how badass it is today, it will be obsolete in a few years, and good luck trying to upgrade it! I never end up using my laptop to play games anywhere else but home, which I can do with a regular PC.

Which is why you shouldn't spend that much if you actually want to game on the go.

What would you guys recommend if the laptop is going to be my only computer? I'm moving into a small dorm/apartment and I need a laptop. I come home on the weekends so my gaming desktop will remain at home. I WILL be playing some games on the laptop. What's a good amount to spend? I'm thinking of getting something in the $900-1,000 range from newegg.

Keep the desktop wherever you spend the most time. Get a regular laptop for the other place and consider it a break from gaming. That's not to say you can't watch movies and stuff on it.

Take this man's advice for the love of god!

Yeah I have to agree with everyone else. I bought a gaming laptop ($1600) for college like 9 months ago, and what I basically do is this:

- When I have a class where I can bring the laptop, I do, and I surf the net or work on assignments, during breaks I go on reddit or youtube and look at shit with my friends while eating cheeseburgers at McDonalds.

- At home I play TF2, WoW, CoD 4, N64 games, watch TV shows and movies, and surf the net.

It's freaking pointless man. I could've gotten a kickass PC and a crappy laptop and done the same thing, except my wrists would probably hurt less and I'd be able to upgrade. Also lan parties would be harder to organize, though I've only done that like once or twice.

I can't stand my gaming deskptop anymore. And I'm sick of building computers. My desktop sounds like a mini airplane about to take off. Not to mention the ****ing heat it's creating in my room, it's a ****ing hell during summer...

lol gaming laptops will burn your lap, even my lil gateway netbook gets rather warm.

Gaming laptops can be an excellent thing to buy, providing you have the money to burn and buy the most appropriate hardware for your situation, but if you're buying one to cut down on noise or heat then you're buying it for the wrong reason. Just dust out your desktop's case.

The machine I'm typing this on, which I've used for 2 years as my main gaming machine and primary means of communication while living in 2 countries and a dozen plus hotels, is telling you to stop laughing because you're an idiot.

Did.. you not take any of our advice? Did you just ignore everything we said, and you're going with ALIENWARE of all things?

The laptop Higlac posted is ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS CHEAPER and IS BETTER.

i mad

With Alienware you are going to overpay by quite a bit. You do get a fancy case and better cooling though.

I went with a Sager and havent regretted it since. Yeah, it will never be as powerful as a high end desktop, but if you can live with that it definitely has its uses. I bring it over to friends houses all the time to game, which is something I would be too lazy to do with a desktop.
